Stamp smth out = to get rid of something that is wrong or harmful. The new legislation is
intended to stamp out child prostitution.
Root out = to find and remove a person or thing that is causing a problem. Ms Campbell has
been appointed to root out inefficiency in this company.
to grapple with smth = to try to deal with or understand a difficult problem or subject. Today,
many Americans are still grappling with the issue of race.
Knock-on effect = When an event or situation has a knock-on effect, it causes other events
or situations, but not directly. If one or two trains run late, it has a knock-on effect on the entire
rail service.
Clamp down on smth = to take strong action to stop or limit a harmful or unwanted
activity. The government is clamping down on teenage drinking.
Put the brakes on = to slow down or stop an activity. The city has put the brakes on further
spending.
