Assignment 3: Ethics and Corporate Responsibility in the Workplace and the World
Due Week 7 and worth 250 points

PharmaCARE (We CARE about YOUR health) is one of the worlds most successful
pharmaceutical companies, enjoying a reputation as a caring, ethical and well-run company that
produces high-quality products that save millions of lives and enhance the quality of life for
millions of others. The company offers free and discounted drugs to low-income consumers, has
a foundation that sponsors healthcare educational programs and scholarships, and its CEO serves
on the PhRMA board. PharmaCARE recently launched a new initiative, We CARE about YOUR
world, pledging its commitment to the environment through recycling, packaging changes and
other green initiatives, despite the fact that the companys lobbying efforts and PAC have
successfully defeated environmental laws and regulations, including extension of the Superfund
tax, which was created by Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and
Liability Act (CERCLA).

Based in New Jersey, PharmaCARE maintains a large manufacturing facility in the African
nation of Colberia, where the company has found several healers eager to freely share
information about indigenous cures and an abundance of Colberians willing to work for $1.00 a
day, harvesting plants by walking five (5) miles into and out of the jungle carrying baskets that,
when full, weigh up to fifty (50) pounds. Due to the low standard of living in Colberia, much of
the population lives in primitive huts with no electricity or running water. PharmaCAREs
executives, however, live in a luxury compound, complete with a swimming pool, tennis courts,

and a golf course. PharmaCAREs extensive activities in Colberia have destroyed habitat and
endangered native species.

In preparation for this assignment, use the Internet or Strayer Library to research companies that
have recently experienced negative consequences as a result of the companys corporate
activities.

Write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:

1.Describe the key characteristics of a stakeholder and determine all the stakeholders within the

Introduction
Ethics is very important in the workplace, the lack of it can demoralize a company. If a
workplace has good ethics it can make the work environment a place where all can have a
chance to be respected. PharmaCare even though it helps others with its health products
and environmental concerns, has another to look at how they respect each other in the
workplace. In any business there are stakeholders that is why companies are in business..
There are certain characterisitcs of a stakeholder, Stakeholders can affect or be affected by the
organization's actions, objectives and policies. Some examples of key stakeholders are creditors,
directors, employees, government (and its agencies), owners (shareholders), suppliers, unions,
and the community from which the business draws its resources.( BusinessDictionary.com).

1.Describe the key characteristics of a stakeholder and determine all the stakeholders within the
PharmaCARE scenario. A person, group or organization that has interest or concern in an
organization.Stakeholders
There are certain characterisitcs of a stakeholder, Stakeholders can affect or be affected by the

A. Stakeholders can affect or be affected by the organization's actions, objectives and

policies. Some examples of key stakeholders are creditors, directors, employees,
government (and its agencies), owners (shareholders), suppliers, unions, and the
community from which the

TThe stakeholders in the Colberia scenario is the CEO and its executives.
In addition, the healers are stakeholders as well even though they are lowly compensated to
the extent of exploitation. The Rx drug stores, low income consumers are stakeholders as
well. All of these group people have something to gain from the exploitation of the healers.
An example of Pharmacare stakeholders in general is are inin the symposium in Canada.
According to the Pharmacare symposium in Canada, The Pharmacare 2020 symposium
brought together over 200 delegates representing key stakeholder groups in pharmaceutical
policy in Canada These are the stakeholders who were represented by The Pharmacare
2020 symposium brought together over 200 delegates representing key stakeholder groups
in pharmaceutical policy in Canada. Rx Industry, Health Industry, Non profits, Public
sector, Academia, and others. I am pretty sure the others represent shareholders and
stockholders. In a pharmaceutical company the delegates that represent stakeholders, aqnd
the shqareholders and stockholders represent the stakeholders in pharmacare on the hold
(("Phamacare 2020: Audience-Pharmacare 2020,"
n.d.http://pharmacare2020.ca/conference/highlights/results/). Based on the gathering of delegates

there are many stakeholders in Pharmacore. The ones at the symposium are in general the higher
income people that benefits or are effected by Pharmacare. Some of Pharmacare stakeholder
interests in Colboria lies in lining their pocketbooks at the expense of the healers. The healers are
so desperate for money that they allow themselves to be exploited.

Human Rights
2. Analyze the human rights issues presented by PharmaCAREs treatment of the Colberias
indigenous population versus that of its executives. Recommend at least three (3) changes
PharmaCARE can make to be more ethical going forward.
In the scenario on Colbario there is no respect for the natives in Colbario there is a wide
gap in wages and living standards of the CEO and executives and the wages and living
standards of the healers and natives of Colberia. Pharmacre care exploited these healers so
much that they were endangering the environmenthabit. Human rights are rights inherent
to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic
origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our
human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and
indivisible (http://www.ohchr.org/EN/Issues/Pages/WhatareHumanRights.aspx)(What are
Human Rights?, n.d.)..
If we look at what having humans rights mean, we find that Universal human rights are
often expressed and guaranteed by law, in the forms of treaties, customary international
law, general principles and other sources of international law. International human rights
law lays down obligations of Governments to act in certain ways or to refrain from certain

10

acts, in order to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms of
individuals or groups("What are human rights?," n.d.).
JJust because a country is a third world country many westerners think they can exploit
them. Many natives of third world country are so desperate for any amount of money that
they endangered themselves by working far below poverty level wages. Many westerners
assume that these healers are used to living in poverty and that there is nothing wrong with
exploiting third world people. There are usually no laws in third world countries to protect their
citizens or natives. In addition, if there are, they are not enforced.
Three changes that Pharmare can make them more ethical going forward are: (1). They should
pay the workers a higher wage, so they can feel like they can feel fulfill a dream like the
American dream. (2). Pharmacare should give the Colborians better transportation, so they
will not have to walk five miles in the jungle and walk back with a heavy load . In addition,
restore the environment in the jungle by replanting and letting the soil rest every so many years.
(3). Pharmacare can help build schools, so the Coloborians be taught to educate themselves and
their descendants not just to work in just manual labor for Pharmacare, but alongside them
in laboratories and executive positions. These schools can also prepare the Colborians for other
careers as well.
3. Assess PharmaCAREs environmental initiative against the backdrop of its anti-environmental
lobbying efforts and Colberian activities. Support the position.

Environment

11

Pharmacare does not seem to care about the environment in all the ways that they could because
they have successfully lobbied to defeated some environmental laws and regulations.
Pharmacare says it cares about the environment and have all kinds of environmental
programs going, but yet exploit the habitat of thise third world country. Although the
plants they gather fromor these igdenousindigenous people cures are helping people, t. They
are not doing anything about replanting these plants. Protecting the environment is
important because if it is not protected, it can have long term effects.

Protecting the environment is important for instance in the United States it is so important,
that the Environmental Protection Agency was formed. The Environmental Protection
Agency, established in 1970 after the successful celebration of worlds first Earth day, has
been structured to protect the environment from pollutants and to enforce stringent
environmental policies to reduce the damage being done and maintain a clean environment
for the health of human beings and other species on earthEPA was established to curb
uncontrolled activities of environmental pollution in the form of hazardous waste disposal
and landfills, illegal exploitation of resources, air pollution, dumping of chemical and
industrial waste etc. which lead to the deterioration of environment and cau)>sed threat to
public health (environmentabout.com). (What is Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA)?). Pharmacare is really contradicting themselves. They have the We Care About Your
World project, which include recycling projects and other economy efficient projects, but they

12

do not mind exploiting the plants in the jungle which the healers pick. They do not have any
replanting of these plants projects. This abuse of the land can cause environmental hazards later
on
. Lobbying against environmental regulations and laws do not make Pharmacare environmental
friendly company, it just makes it look they do enough to get by, but really are hypocrites
when it comes to the environment.

4. Decide whether or not PharmaCAREs actions with respect to the indigenous people of
Colberia would be ethical in accordance with each of the following ethical theories:Ethics

Pharmacare thinks in a twisted way in my opinion that they are ethical because anything can be
twisted to make them look like they are ethical. Pharmacares behavior and attitude towards the
indigenous people of Colberia is not very ethical even though in some points they think have
cause. Pharmacare has
a. Utilitarianism ethics, - philosophy : the belief that a morally good action is one that helps
the greatest number of people( Utilitarianism," n.d.). I believe Pharmacare, praticespractices
utilitarianism because this company does not think there is anything wrong with exploiting
the healers because the plants they get out of the jungle are used to help cure people of

13

their ailments. In a sense their ethics are to do what is best overall for human kind. Pharmacare
makes it seem that the healers should sacrifice their health and lives for the overall good of
humankind. However, the Coloborians are suffering from the side effects.
The difference between ultinarianism and deontology is that deontology is concerned about duty.
bThe definition of . Deontology is: - The word deontology derives from the Greek words
from duty (deon) and science (or study) of (logos). In contemporary moral philosophy,
deontology is one of those kinds of normative theories regarding which choices are morally
required, forbidden, or permitted. In other words, deontology falls within the domain of
moral theories that guide and assess our choices of what we ought to do (deontic theories),
in contrast to (aretaic [virtue] theores) that---fundamentally, at leastguide and assess
what kind of person (in terms of character traits) we are and should be (plato.standard.edu)
(Standford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: Deontological Ethics).("Standford Encyclopedia of
Philosophy: Deontological Ethics," n.d.). Pharmacare thinks its duty is to provide medicine
that saves lives. They believe even though people from third world may seem explotited, it is
there duty to get medicine to save lives. Pharmacare makes it seem like it is the healers duty
to sacrifice their health and lives to better humankind. It is like they have a Jesus dying on the
cross sacrificial attitude. The healers and the indigenous people of Colboria may feel its their
duty to destroy their environment to help Pharmacare better humankind with their cures.

c. Virtue ethicsIf I would judge Pharmacare by their virtue ethics, I would have to ask the indigenous people
how has Pharmacare helped or hurt them. What might look bad to some people may be okay for

14

some people. Virtue ethics is currently one of three major approaches in normative ethics.
It may, initially, be identified as the one that emphasizes the virtues, or moral character, in
contrast to the approach which emphasizes duties or rules (deontology) or that which
emphasizes the consequences of actions (consequentialism) .Jul 18, 2003 Virtue Ethics
(Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) plato.stanford.edu/entries/ethics-virtue/Stanford
Encyclopedia of Philosophy("Standford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: Virtue Ethics," n.d.) I think
ethically Pharmacare thinks they are helping the healers with a small standard of living even
though the people are exploited by Pharmacare. I think it is good in a way they pay the
Coloborians something but ethically they are exploiting the Coloborians. In thinking overall
about the ethics of Pharmacare we need to look at the ethics of care. This is what ethics of care
mean:

d .Ethics of care- The ethics of care is a normative ethical theory often considered a type of
virtue ethics. Dominant traditional ethical theories such as utilitarianism and Kantian
deontological ethics developed ethical theories based on an understanding of society as the
aggregate of autonomous, rational individuals with an emphasis on rules, duties, justice,
rights, impartiality, universality, utility and preference satisfaction; care ethics, on the
other hand, developed based on the understanding of the individual as an interdependent,
relational being and emphasized the importance of human relationships and emotion based
virtues such as benevolence, mercy, care, friendship, reconciliation, and sensitivity. In care
ethics, the family is the primary sphere of morality where a person can cultivate his or her
character (Ethics of care, n.d.). (of_care). In looking at ethics of care, this makes one look at

15

the total picture of how Pharmacare care about the people of Coloboria and how they care about
the people they are healing with the medicines they are having. In looking at the total picture of
care which involves the total person of the indigenous people. This includes spiritually, mentally,
physically and socially. All in all, all of these people both sides have exploited each other, but
they care about helping humankind.
e. Your own moral / ethical compass-
Finding Your Moral Compass

By Gary Ryan Blair in Leadership

Socrates
Socrates
Can Leadership Ethics be Taught?
This is partly what Gary Blair has taught on finding your moral Compass:
The issue is an old one. Almost 2500 years ago, the philosopher Socrates debated the
question with his fellow Athenians.

16

Socrates position was clear: Ethics consists of knowing what we ought to do, and such
knowledge can be taught.

What Id like to do is teach you a systematic approach to everyday ethics and it is grounded
in five questions.

I recommend that you ask yourself these five questions at the end of each day as they will
help you to practice everyday morality.

1. Did I practice any virtues today?

In The Book of Virtues, William Bennett notes that virtues are habits of the heart we learn
through modelsthe loving parent or aunt, the demanding teacher, the respectful manager, the
honest shopkeeper. They are the best parts of ourselves.

Ask yourself, Did I cross a line today that gave up one of those parts? Or was I, at least some of
the time, a person who showed integrity, trustworthiness, honesty, compassion, or any of the
other virtues I was taught as a child?

2. Did I do more good than harm today? Or did I try to?

17

Consider the short term and long-term consequences of your actions.

3. Did I treat people with dignity and respect today?

All human beings should be treated with dignity simply because they are human. People
have moral rights, especially the fundamental right to be treated as free and equal human
beings, not as things to be manipulated, controlled, or cast away.

How did my actions today respect the moral rights and the dignified treatment to which
every person is entitled?

4. Was I fair and just today?

Did I treat each person the same unless there was some relevant moral reason to treat him
or her differently?

Moral Compass

18

Justice requires that we be fair in the way we distribute benefits and burdens. Whom did I
benefit and whom did I burden? How did I decide?

5. Was my community better because I was in it? Was I better because I was in my
community?

Consider your primary community, however you define itneighborhood, apartment

building, family, company, church, etc. Now ask yourself, was I able to get beyond my own
interests to make that community stronger? (Blair, n.d.).
My moral compass toward Pharmacare is that they should treat the Colberians with respect
even though they are third world people. They should try to help them live better than
slave like people. They should use some fund and help build schools for these people, so they
can help themselves more and at the same time help Pharmacare. Pharmacare should have
that, We Care About Your World attitude toward the Colberians if not Pharmacare seems like
they are hyprocrites. Do not campaign one way in certain areas of the world, but do something
different in Colberia these people are not animals. Pharmacare needs to teach themselves to have
compassion for these Colberians why they are helping others.

Was I able to draw on my communitys strengths to help me in my own process of becoming

more human?

19

CONNECTING Everyday Ethics to Moral Leadership

This everyday ethical reflection must occur before we can effectively confront the larger moral
questions.

A person who wants to take moral leadership on national or international issues must take special
responsibility for whats going on inside his or her own self, inside his or her own consciousness,
lest the act of leadership create more harm than good.

Moral CompassEvery day, we decide who we are truthful or dishonest? Every day, our actions
have consequences and can be defined as helpful or hurtful.

Every day, we either build up or tear down relationships. We tend to think of ethics as coming
into view only in congressional investigations or intensive care units.

But, in reality, we practice ethics every day; we work together to be at our bestor our worstevery day and that is precisely why we must individually and collectively live with the highest
ethical standards so that we can be and reflect the type of change we want demonstrated in our
communities and future generations.

Ethics, Gary Ryan Blair, Moral CompassPharmacare vs Real-World company

5.Compare PharmaCAREs actions with those of at least one (1) real-world company, whose
corporate activities led to ethical, environmental, or workplace safety issues and financial loss.
Analyze the similarities and differences between PharmaCARE and the company that you
chose. The real world company that I have chosen to compare with Pharmacare is Monsanto Co.
This is the information that I have gathered on Monsanto Co: The Missouri based agricultural
company has been named world's most unethical company. The company leads the world's

21

production of genetically modified foods. Monsanto is infamous for unfairly suing farmers who
try to grow foods both ethically and organically. If the lawsuit is not ruled in Monsantos favour,
they still achieve their desired results as the small-scale farms become bankrupt due to legal
costs. The company is also the creator of the highly poisonous herbicide named Roundup ( a
weed killer). This weed killer is both damaging to ecology as well as humans. A 2008 scientific
study found Roundup can cause the death of unborn children. (Unethical companies, n.d.)
Pharmacare is destroying the environment in Coloboria and Monsanto is destroying the
environment with herbicide. Herbicide is also a workplace issue with Monsanto Co. Pharmacare
has a workplace issue by letting workers walking in the jungle and carrying plants that weigh up
to fifty pounds in inadequate transportation. Pharmcare is paying workers one dollar an hour that
is a financial loss for those healers. Monsanto is suing farmers if they grow food ethically and
also organically, this is a financial loss to the farmers if Monsanto Co succeeds with their
lawsuits. Monsanto Co is very unethical because it tries to force farmers to grow food their way,
and if they do not sues them. They do not conduct safe practices with genetically modified foods.
The difference in the Monsanto Co and Pharmacare is that with Monsanto farmers and workers
are not paid one dollar an hours. Farmers and workers also have adequate transportation to
transport food.
In conclusion, what should companies favor greed or good ethics?
