EARLY BRITISH ACTIONS AGAINST THE COLONISTS
ACT

PROCLAMATION
OF 1763

STAMP ACT

QUARTERING
ACT

Causes leading up to the Act

(Event or situation that led to
this Act or What you believe
British motives were)

Description (What this

Parliamentary Act required
or demanded of Colonies)

Effects: Colonists reaction and

consequences (Colonists
retaliation and British response)

British government wanted to

control Colonists and prevent
them from getting into
conflicts with Native
Americans in the Ohio valley.

England declared that

colonists were not allowed to
settle west of the
Appalachian mountains.
Colonists had to remain east
of the Appalachian mts.

Colonists protested because many

had already settled in the Ohio
valley. Colonists claimed that land
east of the Appalachian mts. was
scarcethe only farmland left
was across the Appalachians.

To repay the cost of the

French and Indian War and
get out of debt, England
wanted to force the colonies
to pay their fair share in
taxes.

Colonists had to only use

stamped papers and pay a
tax for all papers, including
newspapers, wills, marriage
licenses, playing cards, etc.

Colonists protested the Stamp

Act, claiming that it was
taxation without
representation. England
eventually repealed Stamp Act.

To control colonists, England

wanted to increase troops in
the Colonies. England was
hoping to save money to
afford increased #s of
troops.

England required that

colonists provide housing
(quarters) for troops,
including candles, bedding,
firing, cooking utensils, salt,
vinegar, and beer or cider.

New Jersey protested these

laws, said soldiers took up space
and did nothing. New York
assembly voted against providing
funds for some items. Britain
refused to let assembly meet.

ACT

TOWNSHEND
ACT

TEA ACT

INTOLERABLE
ACTS

Causes leading up to the Act

(Event or situation that led to
this Act or What you believe
British motives were)

Description (What this

Parliamentary Act required
or demanded of Colonies)

Effects: Colonists reaction and

consequences (Colonists
retaliation and British response)

Charles Townshend proposed

that to keep an army in America
to control disobedient colonists,
England should not have to pay
for these troops; Colonists
should be taxed.

England taxed colonists on

glass, paper, paint, and tea.

Colonists revolted, boycotting

British goods. Goods made by
colonists were purchased
instead. England repealed all of
the Townshend Acts except for
the tax on tea.

Lord North wanted to help the

British tea manufacturer, the
British East India Company,
from going broke. The company
needed to sell 17 million pounds
of tea by 1773.

To help the British East

India Company, North
proposed that taxes be
lowered on British tea but
continue on Colonial and
Dutch tea.

Colonists protested with

violence. Group called the
Sons of Liberty dumped tea
from British ship into Boston
harbor.

England decided to punish

Massachusetts for dumping tea
into the Boston harbor.

1) Boston Harbor closed to

all shipping until tea was
repaid.
2) Colonial governor
replaced by British
official.
3) British officials would
be tried in England, not
colonies.

To support Mass:
1) Colonists began to unite.
2) Colonies established the
first Continental Congress
w/ representatives meeting
from all colonies.
3) Militias formed in colonies.
