Derive an expression for the heat flow rate through a hollow sphere of ID d1 and OD
d2 whose internal and external surfaces are maintained at temperatures T1 and T2
respectively. The thermal conductivity varies linearly with temperature from k1 at T1
to k2 at T2.
A very long 1 cm diameter copper rod k=377W/mK is exposed to an environment at
220C.The base temperature of the rod is maintained at 1500C.The heat transfer
coefficient between the rod and the surrounding air is 11W/m2K.Estimate the heat
transfer rate from the rod to the surrounding air.

What is Dittus-Boelter equation? Where and when does it apply?
Air at a temperature of 270C is moving at a velocity of 0.3 m/s past a 40W [10]
incandescent bulb. The bulb may be treated as sphere of 50 mm diameter with its
surface at a temperature of 1270C. Estimate the heat transfer coefficient and
compute the percentage of power loss due to convection.
Sketch the film wise condensation on a vertical wall showing film thickness, [5]
velocity and temperature profiles.
Water at atmospheric pressure is boiled in a kettle made of copper. The bottom of [10]
the kettle is flat, 30 cm in diameter and is maintained at a temperature of 1180C.
Calculate the rate of heat required to boil water. Also estimate the rate of
evaporation of water from the kettle.

Discuss the advantages of NTU method over the LMTD method of heat exchanger [5]
design.
Hot coil having a specific heat of 2.09kJ/kgK flows through a counter flow heat [10]
exchanger at the rate of 2268kg/h with an inlet temperature of 930C and an outlet
temperature of 650C.Cold oil having a specific heat of 1.67kJ/kg K flows in at a rate
of 3600kg/h and leaves at 1490C.What area is required to handle this load if the
overall heat transfer coefficient based on the inside area is 0.7 kW/m2K.
a)
State the Plancks law. Write down the expression for the radiation intensity.

Two parallel plates 3mx2m, placed 1m apart, are maintained at 5000C and 2000C,
their respective emissivities being 0.3 and 0.5. If the temperature of the room in
which these plates and located is 400C, estimate the heat lost by the hotter plate.
Consider radiation only.
