INTRODUCTION
Today E-commerce is a byword in Indian society and it has
become integral part of our daily life. The rapid growth of Ecommerce in India over the last two decades, rising internet and
mobile phone penetration has changed the way we communicate
and do business. E-commerce is relatively a novel concept. It is,
at present, heavily leaning on internet and mobile phone
revolution to fundamentally alter the businesses reaches their
customers. While in countries like the US and China, E-commerce
has taken significant strides to achieve sales over 150 billion USD
in revenue, the industry in India is also reaching maximum
customers through E-commerce. Over the past few years, the
sector has grown almost 35% CAGR from 3.8 billion USD in 2009
to an estimated 12.6 billion USD in 2015. Industry studies by
IAMA2 indicate that online travel dominates the E-commerce
industry with an estimated of 70% of the market share. However,
E-retail in both its form, online retail and market place, has
become the fastest-growing segment, increasing its share from
10% in 2009 to an estimated 18% in 2015. Calculations based on
industry benchmarks that the number of parcel check-outs in Ecommerce portals exceeded 100 million in 2015. However, this
share represents a miniscule proportion (less than 1%) of Indias
total retail market, but is poised for continued growth in coming
years. If this robust growth continues over the next few years, the
size of E-retail industry is poised to be 10 to 20 billion USD 20172020. This growth is expected to be led by increased consumerled purchases in durables and electronics, apparels and
accessories, besides traditional products such as books and audiovisuals.
correspondents not just for transaction processing but also for emessaging and information retrieval and dissemination, later
known as e- business. His definition of new mass communication
and mass media and a precursor to the social net working on the
internet 25 years later. In March 1980 he went on to launch
Redifons Office Revolution, which allowed consumers, customers,
agents, distributers, suppliers, and service companies to be
connected on-line to the corporate systems and allow business
transactions to be completed electronically in real-time.
During the 1980s he designed, manufactured, sold, installed,
maintained and supported many online shopping systems, using
videotext technology. These systems which also provide voice
response and handprint processing pre-date the internet and the
World Wide Web, the IBM PC and Microsoft MS-DOS, and were
installed mainly in the UK by large corporations. The first World
Wide Web server and browser, created by Tim Berners Lee in
1990, opened for commercial use in 1991. Thereafter, subsequent
technological innovations emerged in 1994, online banking; the
opening of an online pizza shop by Pizza Hut, Netscapes SSL v2
encryption standard for secured data transfer, and intershops
first shopping system. The first secure retail transaction over the
Web was either by Net Market or Internet shopping Network in
1994. Immediately after, Amazon.com launched its online
shopping site in 1995 and eBay was also introduced in 1995.
Alibabas sites Taobao and Tmall were launched in 2008 and
2009, respectively. Retailers are increasingly selling goods and
services prior to availability through pretail for testing, building
and managing demand.
Customers
Online customers must have access to the Internet and a valid
method of payment in order to complete a transaction. Generally,
higher levels of education and personal income correspond to
more favorable perceptions of shopping online.
Product selection
Consumers find a product of interest by visiting the website of the
retailer directly or by searching among the vendors using a
shopping search engine. Once a particular product is found on
website of the seller, most online retailers use shopping cart
software to allow the consumer to accumulate multiple items and
to adjust quantities, like filing a physical shopping cart or basket
in a convectional store. A checkout process follows (continuing
the physical-store analogy) in which payment and delivery
information is collected, if necessary. Some stores allow
consumers to sign up for a permanent online account so that
some or all of this information only needs to be entered once. The
consumer often receives an e-mail confirmation once the
transaction is complete. Less sophisticated stores may rely on
consumers to phone or e-mail their orders (although full credit
card numbers, expiry date, and card security code, bank account
and routing number should not be accepted through e-mail, for
reasons of security).
Payment
Product delivery
Once a payment has been accepted, the goods or services can be
delivered in the following ways. For physical items:
Shipping: The product is shipped to a customer-designated
address. Retail package delivery is typically done by public postal
system or a retail courier such as FedEx, UPS, DHL, or TNT.
