EXIF DATA
Exchangeable image file
format (officially Exif,

according to
JEIDA/JEITA/CIPA
specifications) is a
standard that specifies
the formats for images,
sound, and ancillary tags
used by digital
cameras (including smart
phones), scanners and
other systems handling
image and sound files
recorded by digital

EXIF DATA

The metadata tags defined in the Exif


standard cover a broad spectrum:

Date and time information. Digital


cameras will record the current date
and time and save this in the
metadata.

Camera settings. This includes static


information such as the camera model
and make, and information that varies
with each image such as orientation
(rotation),aperture, shutter
speed, focal length, metering mode,
and ISO speed information.

A thumbnail for previewing the picture


on the camera's LCD screen, in file
managers, or in photo manipulation
software.

EXIF DATA
As of 2014 many
cameras and most
mobile phones
have a built-in GPS
receiver that stores
the location
information in the
Exif header when a
picture is taken.

There are many programs that you can use
to open a image and view the EXIF data.
We will look at;
Irfanview and Irfanview Plugins
Opanda and Opanda Editor
EXIF Pilot
Windows Explorer

To view the EXIF
data we will start
by launching
Irfanview
Click on File and
then OPEN
Navigate to the
image
Double click the
image

Blue Circle with the
i in the middle.

EXIF DATA
Click on the EXIF
info button on the
bottom left sided of
the pop up box.
If there is no EXIF
info. box it means
the image does not
have any EXIF data
embedded in the
image.

EXIF DATA
The EXIF data can be
the date, time, type of
camera or cell phone
and even the serial
number of the device.
In newer phones with
GPS turned on the
image may have the
longitude and latitude of
where the image was
taken.
To view the location click
on SHOW IN GOOGLE
EARTH.

Removing the EXIF DATA
from an undercover image
You can remove or edit the
data in all of the above
programs
Due to time limits we will
work with just a couple of
the programs to remove or
alter the EXIF Data
First we will use Irfanview
to remove the data
Select the image
Open it in Irfanview

file open click on
FILE and then on
SAVE AS.

ask if you want to
Keep or Reset the
EXIF data.
Make sure the
check mark is in
RESET.

When you reopen
the image you
notice the EXIF
DATA box is
missing.
You can use this to
clean off the EXIF
data from
undercover
images.

We will use Windows
Explorer to alter the EXIF
Data
Changing the EXIF data to
reflect a recently taken
photograph
Open the image in
windows explorer.
In this example we are
using the image named
Image403.jpg
It was taken on 2/1/2015
with an HTC ONE M8.

Identifying
information is gone.
The image name has
had COPY added to
it.
Simply rename the
image.
Now we can add
back some of the
EXIF data we want
showing.

You can change the
date and time as
often as you like.

the EXIF DATA to
fit your persona.
