CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS

BACKGROUND

1.1 INTRODUCTION
Globally, information technology has become a key element in economic
development of many countries in the world. Over the years, many innovations
have taken place in the world, the most striking and most celebrated is the aspect
of information technology. Organizations today are confronted with rapidly
changing market condition indicated by high merger rate and strong competitors.
Under these conditions, traditional management approaches that focus on
financial figures and on centralized, analytical planning methods are considered
to

be

insufficient

for

effectively

steering

the

organization

in

dynamic

environment.
Information Technology which is synonymous with computer communication
technology in everyday language can be defined as technologies such as
telephone, computer, word processing application web browser, servers, full text
document, database and main frame computers.
Its devices such as fax and telephone, other technology devices include data
recognition equipment, telecommuting and teleconferences using real time and
services.
Information

Technology

has

provided

self-service

facilities

from

where

prospective customers can easily complete their account opening documents

directly online. This therefore calls for as a result, there is a pre-requisite need
to embrace information technology. It is in view of this that this research work
attempts to examine the impact of information technology on the performance of

Stargate Financing Company. Information communication technology has played

a prominent role in all areas of human life but the breakthrough of social
progress

and

the vigorous

development

in technology has

immeasurably

increased the role of information in every facet of human life.

Via the use of innovation and creativity pertaining to Information Technology by
Stargate Financing Company, this results to a smooth, easy and convenient way
of processing with adequate and quality service to customers, which has also
paved way for efficiency and effectiveness to processing in Stargate Financing
Company.
According to the managers, it cannot ignore Information Technology because it
plays a significant role in contemporary organizations. The application of
Information

Technology

concept,

techniques,

policies

and

implementation

strategies to commercial organization has therefore become a subject of

fundamental importance and a prerequisite for local and global competitiveness.

1.2

STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

This project will therefore find out the role or impact which the adaption of
information technology has on the vast majority operations of Stargate Financing
Company. It will provide a basis or proposed recommendations which can be readjust to the threats, opportunities, features technological competition and
contingencies of technological firm-level organization. According to Roberts and
Flent (2014) they argued that to be successful, firms typically need to adopt

information technology as part of a system or cluster of mutually reinforcing

organizational approaches. Here are research questions that will provide the
researcher to examine the role of information technology in Stargate Financing
Company:

What are the impacts of information technology to management

performance?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of IT to organization?
What is the relative importance of information technology in the

workplace?
What is the extent of effectiveness of IT in the organization?
What is the extent of influence of IT on the individual employee
behavior and organization performance of the companies?

1.3

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Information Technology has a major driving force to the development of

technology which has impacted in virtually every sector of Stargate Financing
Company.
In the financing sector, the use of computers in their day to day operations in
order to provide quality service to their customers via the use of modern day
technology.
Information Technology has also improved customers knowledge about the use of
computer and other gadgets through which customers of Stargate Financing
Company can send their requests and other concerns anywhere in the world.
1.4SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS
4

This research is concerned with the role and impact of information technology on firm level
organization with the help of Stargate Financing Company. This organization was certified
worthy for the research due to their financial stability and high indulgence in I.T practices. We
are also concerned with how the employees and the customers are reacting to this new
innovation. We will also consider if investment made in information technology was worth the
end result achieved. We will also endeavor to expatiate on the new facilities leading to the
assimilation of information technology in the organization.

This research work will be based on the role and impact of information technology in a firm level
organization using Stargate Financing Company as a case study. The respondent will comprise of
the staff and customers numbering 1-100.It will examine the extent to which organization have
embraced information technology (office automation, computers) as well as determine the role
information technology has had on the customer (i.e. if they prefer the old ways of operations or
if they prefer the new and modern ways of operations. This study may be limited due to slow
response of some employee in giving out information and low co-operation on the part of the
members of the public.

CHAPTER II
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

2.1 RELEVANT THEORIES

Contingency theory suggests that an information system should be designed in a flexible manner
so as to consider the environment and organizational structure confronting an organization.

Information systems also need to be adapting to the specific decisions being considered. In other
words, information systems need to be designed within an adaptive framework. Review of
accounting information system literature also indicate that most AIS studies have incorporated
contingency factors such as organizational structure, business strategy, and environmental
condition in their research model but have neglected the influence of IT on AIS design.
Furthermore, the few studies that have examined the relationship between AIS design and IT
have defined IT in a narrow perspective (Ismail). Similar to IT researches, these studies viewed
IT from the technological perspective only but failed to incorporate other perspectives of IT
sophistication such as informational, functional and managerial. Hunton and Flowers (2016)
suggested that a more comprehensive AIS study is needed to explain the relationship between IT
and accounting and its subsequent impact on organization in general and accounting/accountants
in particular. Furthermore, most of previous IT/AIS studies were conducted in developed
countries (Ismail and King, 2014). Very few of such studies have been carried out in developing
countries especially in the Middle East. Due to the continuous flow of considerable amount of
empirical studies which investigate the contingency factors and accounting and/or IS and
indicates the importance and vitality of this theory, this study is theoretically and empirically
constituted upon contingency theory which has long been applied in both accounting and
information system disciplines. The contingency theory suggests that an organization's structure
is based on contextual factors such as environmental conditions, business strategy, organizational
structure, production technology, and management style (Ismail and King, 2014).
2.2 RELATED LITERATURE
Foreign
Firms invest heavily in IT such as hardware, software, network, and data components; in order to
improve their performance (Oana, 2013). However, based on the mixed findings of the linkage
7

between IT spending and firm performance, some researchers in the MIS field point to ITbusiness alignment as a construct that can help organizations to improve the positive impact of IT
on organizational performance. Furthermore, little empirical evidence has examined the
relationship between strategic alignment and IT payoffs. Some researchers have shown that
strategic alignment is correlated with firm performance, IT-business value, IS effectiveness and
competitive advantage. For instance, the empirical literature has remained silent on the degree to
which strategic alignment has impacted IT business value (where IT business value mediates the
link between strategic alignment and firm performance). Therefore, this paper reviews a holistic
literature on whether IT investments contribute to a firms performance, or should be through
other organizational factors such as aligning these investments with business strategies. In other
words, this paper sheds light on how firms can improve firm performance with IT investments.
This paper reviews and extends recent scholarly and popular literature to provide a broad
overview of how information technology (IT) impacts organizational characteristics and
outcomes. First, based on a review of the literature, we describe two of the principal impact
enhancing benefits of IT: information efficiencies and information synergies, and identify five
main organizational outcomes of the application of IT that embody these benefits. We then
discuss the role that IT plays in moderating the relationship between organizational
characteristics including structure, size, learning, culture, and inter-organizational relationships
and the most strategic outcomes, organizational efficiency and innovation.
Local
The transformation of manual enrollment transaction to automate and now into web based
automation is one example of what has driven partly by the rapid technological innovation. Any

ways just to make work easier and faster like enrollment transactions is possible with the
emergence of computer technologies. Technology innovation had influenced mans work from
data processing, business transaction, research, planning, monitoring and even in medical
operation on human anatomy are now entrusted to computer technology. (Bacala&Reanno, 2015)

According to Eusebio (2013), importance of Information Technology is increasing day by day. In

the latest decades of the Millennium winning organization are those which are willing to integrate
business strategy and computer information technology in plying their respective trades. The use
of Information Technology results for them to be able to develop products fast and make
decisions fast, ability to have fluid organization structures, able to cope with the demanding work
force and external environment by the rapid development of innovative approaches and lastly
using information system confirms the companys mission vision.

Many countries nowadays, especially the developing nations are challenged by the rapid
technological changes. This has radically changed the living and working styles of the entire
society. This transformation has been driven partly by rapid technological innovation. While in
the 20th century saw the rise of the industrial revolution with steam powered machines
intensifying and expanding human productive power, the 21st century was characterized by the
birth of machine powered light and the emergence of broadcasting and computer technologies
the extend the reach of human creativity even more and made possible new ways by which
humans could live and work together (Tinio, 2016)
2.3 RELATED STUDIES
Foreign

Information Technology is being implemented by a growing number of companies to be more

completive in corporate world. All companies need to make a step forward towards a new
technology. To be able to compete with the global market, it was a good answer (Lanvin and
Maggarqul, 2013).
IT is interfused in all areas of professional and personal life: from providing communication and
up to medicine and bread-making. Information technologies are one of the most important and
promising fields given that qualified specialists with a higher education degree in IT are needed
in all areas of life from business and science to the entertainment sector (Manrian, 2015)
Golla (2012) stated that record keeping is an organized way of storing valuable

information

about certain persons handling of such records the proposed system includes all the i m p o r t a n t
records that are organize and place on the system database that are subjectively relating to the
transactions of the organization.
Several criteria must also be considered to create a successful organization. By targeting
strategic key phrases that appeal to your target audiences, Advance Information Technology
allows you to be found by global or regional markets of individuals who are seeking precisely
whatever it is that you offer. Whether it is a product, a service, a mission or a message that you
want to promote, search engine optimization provides benefits for just about any type of
organization that wants to reach people. IT-education abroad is based on cutting-edge
technologies. Information technologies departments are some of the newest in higher education
institutions, as they all were opened not more than fifteen years ago. The faculty includes true
experts in the field of computer technologies, leading software developers and engineering gurus
(Jaffray, 2016).

10

Local
Todays economy has become an intertwined, international marketplace where ideas are the
driving force rather than basic goods. Technological advancements continue to change the way
people live their lives all over the world and employers are looking to capitalize on this.
Individuals who possess a combination of technical training and a certain level of creativity are in
high-demand. (Riceo, 2015)
Businesses who engaged into Information Technology have been observed to gain a competitive
edge in the field of Financing in terms of accessibility, convenience and availability. It proves to
enhance the way usual business transactions occur and helps lessen the time and effort consumed
by the company and customers as well (Deanna and Fritz, 2014). With these, a good relationship
with their consumers will be established and their objective of increasing their sales will be
achieved (Katherine, 2013).

CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 METHODS AND TECHNIQUES OF THE STUDY

Data for this project will be collected, using a non-probability sampling method. Here the
sampling selection is based on the subjective choice of the researcher as to which elements best
provide desired basis and probability of good outcome.
3.2 POPULATION AND SAMPLE OF THE STUDY
17

Population refers to the total number of cases in the focus of interest. The population of this
research work will focus mainly at firm-level organization. The sample size used for this research
work consists of one organization, which is Stargate Financing Company. This firm was selected
based on its oriented technology driven state, profitability, large capital base and reliable network
of organization. A total of hundred (100) questionnaires were issued to both customers and staffs
of Stargate Financing Company.
3.3 RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS
The research instruments being the questionnaires will be administered by the researcher and a
face to face approach will be adopted in the process of administering the questionnaires. This
instrument was drafted by the researcher; howbeit the supervisor of this study reviewed and
acknowledged it before implementation exercise to ensure that the questionnaire was structured
in order to be appropriate for the study.
3.4 DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURE
The questionnaires were administered by the researcher in person. A face-to-face approach was
adopted by the researcher in disseminating the questionnaires. This approach was adopted in
order to monitor the data collection and to ensure that data supplied or response are of high
quality.
3.5 DATA PROCESSING AND STATISTICAL TREATMENT
Data presentation gives a good description into the entire research work. It focuses on the
statistical instruments used, since variables are involved in this research work, the data collected
will be converted into normal or ordinal figures by the application of predetermined weighting on
them. This is because data that are collected are presented in forms that would enable them to be

18

easily analyzed in terms of interpretation. The method of presentation addresses how the data
collected are disclosed to the public and presented to aid analysis
The researcher presented the data obtained via the questionnaire with the use of descriptive
statistics comprising the sample percentage and tables, and pie chart presentation for adequate
understanding of the data. The adoption of data presentation that will be used for this research
work is the T-test method, because we want to know how information technology has been able
to impact more on the services operation provided by Stargate.
In other to analyze and interpret appropriately the responses from the respondent, the parametric
and non-parametric tools were used. It shall be tested using the t-test statistical method and linear
regression.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND
INTERPRETATION OF DATA

4.1 PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS OF DATA COLLECTED

Out of 100 questionnaires, 94 were returned from the respondents. This gives a response of 94%.
This was a good result as a result of follow up and the non-retrievable questionnaires were as a
result of the negligence of the staffs and customers to fill their received questionnaire.

CHAPTER V
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND
RECOMMENDATIONS

33

SUMMARY OF WORK
Chapter one serves as introduction of the whole study, it shows the purpose of the work, the
statement of the problems, significance of the study and scope and limitation of the study. The
study equally showed a theoretical framework that had been done by scholars and researchers in
the area of inquiry in chapter two. The research methodology employed in this study is seen in
chapter three. It explained the research methods and sampling technique, method of data
collection, research instrument, method of data presentation and analysis, validity and reliability
of instruments.
The chapter four of this study entails the data analysis of the data collated through primary
sources only during the field work. Stargate Financing Company was selected to form the case
study of this research work. The questionnaires were served to both officials and customers of
Stargate. In this chapter therefore, the researcher aimed at giving a summary of the finding of
both the literature and after which analysis carried out in chapter four, using the questionnaires
distributed. Conclusions are made and some useful recommendations given.
CONCLUSION
From our research we can say information technology has a positive impact on the image,
goodwill and growth of Stargate Financing Company. Customer satisfaction is of a paramount
importance to the achievement of organizational goals. It has geometrically increased the rate of
patronage as a result of the supply of redefined products and services to meet the needs and
demand of the public. Information technology has also helped to reduce the rate of fraud in the
organization. Present day financing activities are computerized and not manual, making it
difficult to make any alterations; such actions can easily be traced and corrective measure taken.
34

Information technology has also provided better and well-grounded infrastructure to speed up
transaction, increase consistency and enhance the operation.
Stargate have been able to derive benefits from information technology, electronic and service
delivery in the area of improved efficiency and effectiveness of their operations so that more
transactions can be processed faster and most conveniently, which will undoubtly impact
significantly on the overall performance of the organization. The customers on the other hand,
stand to enjoy the benefit of quick service delivery.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The impact of information technology in a firm-level organization performance has been broadly
discussed in the previous chapters. However, it is only appropriate to make certain
recommendations that may be useful to the enhancement of this purpose.
i.

Information technology should be fully funded and receive unconditional support from
the management. Financial constraints are part of the problems that limit the effectiveness

ii.

of information technology in the industry.

Proper enlightment programs and mediums should be put in place to enhance
communication between the institution and their customer. This will ease the flow of

iii.

information hereby keeping customers current and updated.

Committee should be setup to monitor the implementation of information technology in
the industry. These should be periodic reviewer of the planning techniques to ensure they

iv.

suit the objectives of the organization.

Priotize the customer before the technology. It is important to first and foremost identify
the needs of the customer before introducing technology. The technique chosen must be
relevant to the total corporate objective so as to avoid stagnation or loss.

35

v.

Generators in the company should be run on stand-by to avoid disruption in the flow of
electricity which can slow down the rate of operations. This is because most information
technology innovations need electricity to function.
