Assignment 7: Performance Task and Rubric

Subject: Social Studies/US History - Grade: 10

Topic: Civil War
Teacher: Katie Dwyer
Performance Task
Title: Travel Back in Timeline
WV Content Standard: Demonstrate an understanding of the causes and the course
of the Civil War and Reconstruction in America.
SS.10.H.CL4.1: Analyze the social, political, and cultural characteristics of the
North, the South, and the West before and after the Civil War (e.g., the lives of
African Americans and social reform movements such as abolition and womens
rights).

Teacher Written Objective: After compiling and organizing key events, the student will create
an interactive timeline online with pictures, videos (created by the student), and annotations of
what they consider are the 10 most important events in the Civil War for either the North or
South.
Brief Description of Task: Students will work in a group of two to three students to create a
time line from the Civil War for either the North or South. They will find 10 major events for that
side and create an interactive video timeline on the computer.
C. Instructions for Students
You will work with a group member to create a timeline with 10 major/key
events that you think were influential for either the North or South, during the
Civil War. You will be assigned a certain side from the Civil War, either the
North(Union) or South(Confederacy). These events can be battles, speeches,
meetings, inventions, things important people did, etc.
Plan out the design of your timeline and it should consist of a creative way to
show the 10 major events. It is also best to brain storm different ideas on
what you think are major events for either the North or South.
You should also assign different task to each member of the group and
remember you will be graded on class room work ethic.
You will also need to research each event on the computer and make sure to
have each event in the correct time order (dates are in the correct order).
Make sure to create a rough draft of the events and get it pre-approved before
starting on the final draft.
Once you have decided on your major events you will pick three to create a
movie on. You can either do a reenactment of the event, create a music video
to describe it, a news report, or some other way you think would be creative

to show this event. You will present these videos with your timeline on your
presentation day.
The videos MUST be school appropriate and should also have a rough draft
that will be pre-approved with a script.
Your time line should attempt to show what you think is the most important
events that happened for either the North or the South. Each event should
have its own picture, information about it, and information on why it was
important. You will also incorporate something to let us know what events
you made your videos on.
Create the timeline on the computer or you can also use a large poster board.
Just remember that you will still have to show your videos that you created
with it.
Use the attached rubric to guide your final project. You will be assessed on
research, information (10 Events), pictures, creativity, presentation, group
work, and grammar.

Be prepared to discuss your timeline with the class! Questions might be asked
to see why you think these are major events for that side!
