Question 1
a) State the Newtons Second Law of motion.

b) Two boxes, A and B are tied to each other. The mass of each box is 40 kg. Both
experience a sliding friction force with coefficient of friction, = 0.15. If the pulley is
assumed to be frictionless, calculate
i) The friction force acting on A
ii) The friction force acting on B
iii) The acceleration, a of the boxes
iv) The tension, T of the string

Question 2

A plane at an angle 34 o to the horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the box
and the inclined plane is 0.20. Given the mass of object is 5 kg.
i) Draw the free-body diagram for the box.
ii) Determine the friction force acting on the box.
iii) Determine the acceleration of the box as it slides down the inclined plane.
Ans: 40.66 N, 3.86 m s-2
Question 3
Two bodies of masses 8 kg and 4 kg move along the x-axis in opposite directions with
velocities of 11 ms-1 in the positive x-direction and 7 ms-1 in the negative x-direction
respectively and collide head on. Determine the speed and direction of each after impact if
a) they stick together
b) the collision is perfectly elastic.
Ans: 5 m s-1 (to the right), V1 = - 1 m s-1 (to the left), V2 = 17 m s-1 (to the right)

Question 4

Two boxes are connected by a light cord running over a smooth pulley. Box A of mass 8 kg
rest on the top of the table and box B of mass of 15 kg hung in the air. If the coefficient
between box A and the table is 0.10,
a) draw the free-body diagrams for the two boxes
b) calculate the acceleration of the system
c) calculate the tension in the cord

Question 5
a) State the Newtons Third Law of motion

b) Objects A and B are of masses 1.5 kg and 2.0 kg respectively. They are connected in the
manner as shown in Figure 2 on a rough horizontal table. The objects are released from rest.
The acceleration of the system is 4.34 m s-2 to the left.
i) Sketch a labeled free-body force diagram for each object.
ii) Determine the friction force between A and the table.
iii) Determine the coefficient of the kinetic friction between A and the table.

Question 6
A 2.0 kg ball with a velocity of 1.5 ms-1 collides head on with a 5.0 kg ball that moves in
opposite direction with velocity of 6 ms-1. Determine:
a) The velocities and the directions of the balls after the balls collide elastically
b) The velocity and the direction of the balls after the balls stuck together after collision?
Ans: V1 = - 9.21 m s-1 (to the left), V2 = - 1.71 m s-1 (to the left), - 3.86 m s-1 (to the left)

Question 7
A Produa Viva car of mass 800 kg stops at a traffic light. A Proton Perdana car of mass 1600
kg comes up from behind and hits the Produa Viva. After the collision, both cars move
together.
a) If the Proton Perdana has a speed of 20 ms-1 just before the collision, find the velocity for
both vehicles after the collision.
b) If both vehicles take 3 s to completely stop after the collision, find their acceleration.
Ans: 13.33 m s-1, - 4.44 m s-2

Question 8

A 3 kg rectangular block B is pulled along a rough horizontal surface by a 16 N force


inclined at
34 o to the horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the surface is
0.22. Compute
a) The frictional force exerted on block B
b) The acceleration of block B
Ans: 4.51 N, 2.93 m s-1
Question 9
A 5.0 kg ball moving to the right at 10 m/s strikes a 3.0 kg ball moving left at 5 m/s. What are
the velocities after impact, assuming complete elasticity?
Ans: v1 = -1.25 m s-1, v2 = 13.75 ms-1
Question 10
A 0.1 kg mass is moving in the +x direction at 23 cm s-1 while a 0.01 kg mass is moving in
the -x direction at 40 cm s-1. If theyre collides head on and stick together after the collision,
find their final velocity after the collision.
Ans: 0.173 m s-1

Question 11

A wood machine consists of two masses suspended from a fixed, frictionless pulley, as
shown in above. If M1 = 5.5 kg and M2 = 2.5 kg.
i) What is the acceleration of the system?
ii) What is the tension, T in the string?

A horizontal force of 250 N is required to cause a 10 kg block to slide up a 35 inclined plane


with an acceleration of 30 cm/s2. Find
i) the normal force acting on the block

b) A 30 g bullet is fired into a wooden block of mass of 0.54 kg. The velocity of the bullet
just before it strikes the block is 90 ms-1. The bullet is embedded in the block. Determine the
velocity of the bullet in it.
Ans: 4.8 ms-1
