FIVE IMPORTANT POINTS IN THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY ORDERS

1. Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Jesus Christ to his apostles continues to
be exercised and applied in the church until the end of time which is an Apostolic Ministry.
2. The Sacrament of Holy Orders includes the three hierarchical orders: Bishops (episcopate), Priests
(presbyterate), and Deacons (diaconate). These people signify greatness because of their readiness to really
serve the Lord and the community.
3. Holy Order designates an ecclesial body or civil body into which one enters by means of a special
consecration, ordination. They carry on a certain official functions: Teaching, Sanctifying and Governing in the
church.
4. In a broader sense, Holy Orders emphasize service and leadership not only to those who are ordained but of
all the members of the people of God. The Christian Leadership is basically the Servant Leadership which is a
call to service and love.
5. Holy Order as Sacrament of vocation calls us to be like God in love and service in community. Christian
love, service and leadership are the goals of every Christian and this is what holiness all about.

CALLING OF THE CANDIDATES

Commentator: Let us all now stand for the calling of the candidates
(All stand, candidates will be called)
Assigned priest of the bishop: Let (name of candidate), who is to be ordained priest please come forward.
Candidate: Present. (goes to the bishop, kneel before the Bishop with widespread arms holding a rosary)
PRESENTATION OF THE CANDIDATE
Assigned priest: Most Reverend Father, the church community asks you to ordain this man, our brother, for
service as priest.
Bishop: Is the ordinand worthy to give service upon God and his people?
Assistant priest: After survey among the people of Christ and upon recommendation of those concerned with
their training, I am certain and I testify that they are worthy to give service to the Christian Community.
Bishop: Thanks be to God.
ELECTION BY THE BISHOP AND CONSENT OF THE PEOPLE
Commentator: May all now sit, for the addressing of the bishop of the rightfully duties of our ordained
brothers.
Bishop: A relative or a friend to many, this man in front of us is now is to be raised to the order of priests.
God has made his entire people a royal priesthood in Christ. But our High Priest, Jesus Christ, chose only some
to continue his works and teachings in the mankind. Jesus was sent by the Father, and he in turn sent the
apostles into the world; through them and their successors, the bishops, he continues his work as Teacher, Priest,
and Shepherd. Priests are co-workers of the order of bishops. They are joined to the bishops in the priestly
office and are called to serve God's people.
Here is our brother(s), who had chosen the vocation of serving God with his life and is now to be ordained to
priesthood in the presbyteral order. He is to serve Christ the Teacher, Priest, and Shepherd in his ministry which
is to make his own body, the Church, grow into the people of God, a holy temple.
By this consecration he will be made a true priest of the New Testament, to preach the Gospel, sustain God's
people, and celebrate the liturgy, above all, the Lord's sacrifice.
Bishop then addresses the candidate:

My son, you are now to be advanced to the order of the presbyterate. Let the doctrine guide you to nourish the
people of God. Know what you are doing and imitate the mystery you celebrate. In the memorial of the Lord's
death and resurrection, make every effort to die to sin and to walk in the new life of Christ.
When you baptize, you will bring men and women into the people of God. In the sacrament of penance, you
will forgive sins in the name of Christ and the Church. With holy oil you will relieve and console the sick. You
will celebrate the liturgy and offer thanks and praise to God throughout the day, praying not only for the people
of God but for the whole world. Remember that you are chosen from among God's people and appointed to act
for them in relation to God. Do your part in the work of Christ the Priest with genuine joy and love, and attend
to the concerns of Christ before your own. Seek to bring the faithful together into a unified family and to lead
them effectively, through Christ and in the Holy Spirit, to God the Father. Always remember the example of the
Good Shepherd who came not to be served but gathered his people to protect them and offer his life through his
own death and resurrection.
EXAMINATION OF THE CANDIDATE
(The candidate then stands before the bishop)
Bishop: You are now to proceed to the order of the presbyterate, declare before the people your intention to
undertake the priestly office.
Do you commit to help your office, the presbyteral, and your Bishops in guiding the people of God?
Candidate: Yes, I do commit myself.
Bishop: Do you commit to celebrate the mysteries of Christ faithfully and religiously as the Church has handed
them down to us for the glory of God and the sanctification of Christ's people?
Candidate: Yes, I do commit myself.
Bishop: Do you commit to exercise the ministry of the word worthily and wisely, preaching the gospel and
explaining the Catholic faith?
Candidate: Yes, I do commit myself.
Bishop: Do you commit to devote your life to God for the salvation of his people, and to unite yourself more
closely every day to Christ the High Priest, who offered himself for us to the Father as a perfect sacrifice?
Candidate: Yes, I do commit myself, with the help of God.
PROMISE OF OBEDIENCE
(Then the candidate goes to the bishop and, kneeling before him as he place his hands with the Holy Bible
which the assistant priest holds while his other hand is raised.)
Bishop (the ordinary): Will you give respect and obey me and my successors.
Candidate: Yes, I will.

Bishop (if not the ordinary): Will you give respect and obey the Ordinary.
Candidate: Yes, I will.
Bishop: May God help you in the fulfillment of your promises and be true to what you have committed yourself
with.
