METU Catalog Description: Material and geometric nonlinear analysis of framed structures.
Solution strategies for nonlinear structural analysis. Nonlinear constitutive models of steel and
reinforced concrete. Development and use of computer programs for nonlinear analysis.
Prerequisite Course(s): A course on matrix structural analysis
Course Objectives:
In completing this course, the students must demonstrate the ability to:
- Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of root-finding strategies for nonlinear structural
analysis
- Evaluate the common nonlinear modeling approaches in frame finite elements for section and
element response
- Evaluate the difference between displacement-based and force-based (mixed formulation) frame
elements.
- Evaluate when to account for large displacements in a nonlinear structural analysis.
- Analyze static and dynamic structural response.
Textbooks: None. Suitable hand-outs will be provided as necessary.
