Read the extracts from letters on a problem page in a teen magazine. Then, read the reply

below. Which problem is Maggie responding to?

Dear Maggie
A

I am having problems at school. I want to be a lawyer when I leave school and my

parents and teachers tell me if I work hard I will be able to become one. There are
some students in my class who tease me and call me names like teachers pet .

My problem is my skin. I am so embarrassed by my acne. I am seeing a skin

specialist but it is taking so long to see any improvement and Im sure everyone is
laughing at me. My friends tell me not to worry but

Dear ................
I am sorry to hear that you feel like this. Sometimes just thinking positively can go
a long way towards helping the situation.
Trust your friends. They see the person you are and it is your character and
personality that matter. What is important is how you think and behave. Concentrate
on that and let the dermatologist concentrate on the problem. Eat a healthy diet and
get plenty of rest and fresh air. These can help in many ways, including making you
feel better about yourself. Keep smiling, because everyone looks great when they
smile and it feels good too!
I hope my advice helps.
Yours,
Maggie

Writing

he loggerhead, also known as the caretta

caretta, is a type of sea turtle that can be seen
around the world. It is most famously found on
the Greek island of Zakynthos.
The loggerhead has got a large head. It is around one
metre long and weighs about 350 kg. Its shell is reddish
brown and its skin is yellow.
The female loggerhead lays its eggs every two years
on the beach where it was born. It lays around 100 eggs
which it covers with warm sand. After about two months,
the baby turtles break out of their eggs and race to the
sea.
The loggerhead is an endangered species. The main
reason its numbers are dropping is that tourists damage

the soft sandy

beaches where it
lays its eggs. Beach
umbrellas placed in the
sand can destroy eggs,
and litter and sandcastles left by
tourists can stop baby turtles reaching the sea.
Also, because the baby turtles use the light of the
moon to find their way to the sea, light and noise from
cars and houses can lead them in the wrong directions.
To help save the loggerhead some beaches are now
closed to tourists. The next time youre at the beach,
make sure to kick down your sandcastle and pick up your
rubbish before you leave. It could save a turtles life.

Another name for the loggerhead is the

A Greek turtle.

What is the problem and what are its effects?

What are some solutions you can think of?
What is your conclusion?
Write an essay about the problem. Use

Problem: fishing, tourism and pollution are

causing turtles to become endangered
Effects: the turtles might become extinct, we lose
a wonderful animal that people in the future will
not be able to see
Solution: safer fishing equipment, eco-friendly
tourism and cleaner seas and beaches can help

I would like to offer a different idea: how about safaris? The animals are protected
and you can see them in their natural environment. All in all, zoos can be pleasant places
to spend a few hours and can help some endangered animals. However, animals that
were born free should be able to live free.
B
Zoos give you the chance to be close to wonderful animals, like bears and snakes,
some species of which do not exist in the wild any more. This is a completely different
experience to seeing a documentary on TV! You can learn about the animals, and
sometimes even feed them. Zoos keep animals alive that are not able to survive in the
wild.
As long as the animals are well looked after, visiting a zoo can be a fun day out
C
for all the family. I used to go every year with my grandparents. However, I wonder how
the animals feel about being in cages.
On the other hand, some zoos keep the animals in small boxes. Occasionally, the
D
animals living area are dirty or overcrowded. Sometimes the animals have to do tricks
and perform like in circuses. Animals are intelligent and they have feelings too. Maybe
they do not like being locked up inside cages. It is unnatural for them.

Up is a computer-animated adventure film directed by

Pete Docter. It was released by Walt Disney Pictures in 2009 and opened the 2009
Cannes Film Festival in France - becoming the first animated film to do so.
The main character of the film is a balloon salesman called Carl Fredrickson who lives with
his wife Ellie. One of Ellies dreams is to visit Paradise Falls in South America. After Ellie dies,
Carl lives alone for many years and eventually he decides to fulfil Ellies desire and go to
Paradise Falls. It is an amazing adventure and he is joined, unexpectedly, by a young boy. They
meet some colourful characters on their journey including Dug, a dog that can speak,
and Kevin, a colourful tropical bird. When Carl and his friends meet the evil explorer
Charles Muntz, their adventure almost turns into a nightmare.
Its easy to see why Up became the summer blockbuster of 2009. It
has a gripping plot and an excellent cast of voice actors. Edward
Asner, starring as Carl, gives a very amusing performance. The
soundtrack, composed by Michael Giacchino, is also excellent and
the films graphics really make the characters come alive.
Up is an imaginative and touching film that animation fans of all
ages are sure to enjoy. It is highly recommended.

sentence. If the sentence is correct, their team gets 5 points. If the sentence is wrong or the
students have not produced an answer within the time limit, their team loses 2 points. The

questions.

Australia is the worlds

smallest and flattest
continent. It is in the
Southern Hemisphere.
Its name comes from
the Latin word Australis
which means southern.
The central and largest
part of the country is desert
and is known as the Outback.
Not many people live in the Outback.
Most people live on or near the south east and east
coasts where the climate is better.
Before Australia was discovered by Europeans
back in the 17th century, it was inhabited by people
called the Aborigines. Stories and painting have
always been an important part of life for the
Aborigines. They use them to pass on their beliefs
and traditions from generation to generation. Today,
only 2% of the population is Aboriginal but
aboriginal culture has influenced Australian society
in many ways and is known all over the world.
Australia has also produced many talented and
famous actors. Many film directors have chosen to
shoot their films in Australia because of its beautiful
landscape.
