Main data for turbine island

IP section. Alone among large nuclear steam turbines, the ARABELLE architecture
employs single flow HP and IP cylinders, contained in a combined HP/IP (HIP) casing
for compactness. The incoming main steam expands in the single flow HP cylinder and
is then fed to the vertical moisture separator reheaters (MSRs), where it is superheated
in two stages, and then sent to the single flow IP cylinder of the turbine. This IP section
is unique to ARABELLE .

TM

Maximal use of single flow expansion. ARABELLE s maximal use of single flow
expansion, accounting for 60% of the total expansion, is a major contributor to its overall high efficiency.
TM

Large LP exhaust and biggest LSB. Flamanville 3 has an LP exhaust area of 155 m ,
with Alstoms longest last stage blades to date another contributor to high efficiency.
2

Two stage vertical MSR. The two-stage moisture separator reheaters contribute to
improved performance. The vertical MSRs at Flamanville 3 are a first for French PWRs.
Ease of maintenance. The LP inner casings are independent of the LP exhaust
hoods, allowing LP turbine assembly to be independent of the condenser and the shaftline to be aligned without exhaust hood dismantling. Having the IP/LP pipework below
the turbine table improves access for LP module maintenance.
Welded rotors. Use of welded rotors, a well established feature of Alstom turbines,
reduces the risk of stress corrosion cracking and also has supply chain advantages
because the forgings required are relatively small.
