tutoring.
ENGAGEMENT

Describe how the teacher will capture students interest.

I will show the students a YouTube video called Preview: Coins! by ABCmouse.com
This video has a catchy tune and sings about the value of the four different coins.
Then they sing where the coins can be found.
They also mention what Presidents are on the coins.
What kind of questions should the students ask themselves after the engagement?
The questions the students will need to ask themselves are;
Do I know my coins already?
How much is a quarter worth? What does it look like?
How much is a dime worth? What does it look like?
How much is a nickel worth? What does it look like?
How much is a penny worth? What does it look like?
How much is a dollar worth? What does it look like?
Why do we need money to buy things?

EXPLORATION

Describe what hands-on/minds-on activities students will be doing.

I will be handing out pink worksheets that have a pig on it with the U.S. coins drawn on it.
The students will then be given 4 different types of coins; a quarter, a dime, a nickel, and a penny.
The students will then need to glue the correct coins on the pig.
I will go over a dollar.
Then we will go over the places in where they will need money to use to buy things.
List big idea conceptual questions the teacher will use to encourage and/or focus students exploration.
What color is a quarter? Is it big or small?
What color is a dime? Is it small or extra small?

5E Lesson Plan

What color is a nickel? Is it medium or small?

What color is a penny? Is it extra small or small?
What color is a dollar? Is it round or rectangle?
Why do we need money to buy things?

EXPLANATION

Student explanations should precede introduction of terms or explanations by the teacher. What questions or
techniques will the teacher use to help students connect their exploration to the concept under examination?
Before I show the students the video I will mention and go over the terms of the U.S. coins.
Once I show the video I will review the terms again and seek any questions that the students may have.
If I still see confused faces and no questions I will use the name picking Popsicle sticks and ask them questions to
see if they have comprehended.
I will use the Power Zone while the students are doing the worksheets, to see if they need help with anything.
I will also go over the things that the students like (dolls and toys), and ask them if we buy it, take it, or borrow it?
List higher order thinking questions which teachers will use to solicit student explanations and help them to
justify their explanations.
I will show them a U.S. coin and ask the student to tell me what the coin is and how much it is worth.
I will hold up an object and ask the students how I would get this?
I would ask them why we need money to buy things.

ELABORATION

Describe how students will develop a more sophisticated understanding of the concept.
The students can do more worksheets related to the concepts of money.
They can also use play money in the dramatic play.
At home they can also start a savings and count their coins with their parents.
What vocabulary will be introduced and how will it connect to students observations?
Quarter twenty-five cent coin
Dime ten cent coin
Nickel five cent coin
Penny one cent coin
Dollar one hundred cents
These vocabulary words will connect to the students lives in their everyday lives, especially when they go to the
store with their family.
The students will become more observant.
How is this knowledge applied in our daily lives?
The knowledge will be applied in their daily lives by continuing to have the money concepts posted and go over them
everyday.
They will use them in everyday play.
They will be observant when their parents go shopping.
Having the parents re-enforce what the students are learning.

EVALUATION

How will students demonstrate that they have achieved the lesson objective?
The students will demonstrate that they have achieved the lesson objective by being able to tell me the value of the
U.S. coins and the dollar.
The students will also be able to explain to me the importance of money and why we need it to buy things.
This should be embedded throughout the lesson as well as at the end of the lesson.
I will use the Power Zone throughout this activity.
