2. SLIDE AND SLIDE RAFT INTERCHANGEABILITY

NON-INTERCHANGEABILITY CONDITIONS:
Slides/slide rafts are designed for specific doors and cannot be interchanged with
slides/slide rafts on other doors
All doors on A320FAM aircraft are different sizes i.e. Aft doors, Forward doors,
A318/A319/A320 Offwing Doors and A321 Doors 2 and 3 all have different dimensions to
each other. Due to the difference in widths of the doors, the widths of the slide/slide rafts on
these doors also vary. Therefore, slides/slide rafts are designed for specific doors and cannot
be interchanged with slides/slide rafts on other doors.
Units of different series which are both canted are not interchangeable
Canted slides are those which when deployed, do so either to the left or to the right, not
perpendicular to the door, so that when deployed, they do not come into contact with flaps,
engines etc. Therefore interchangeability between canted slides of different series is not
possible. Slides of different series are rarely canted at the same angle or in the same direction,
therefore there is also no interchangeability between units of different series which are both
canted.
Slides & Slide Rafts are not interchangeable
Slides and slide rafts are not interchangeable as an aircraft must have either all slides or all
slide rafts. This depends on whether the aircraft operates over land or water (the exceptions
are A318/A319/A320 overwing exits and A321 Doors 2+3, which will always have a slide in
this location due to their reduced size).
Aircraft are certified according to their configuration when they delivered, and therefore
interchanging slides/slide rafts involves re-certifying the aircraft for the new configuration.
Physically, slide rafts are heavier than slides, and if interchanging, the door rigging would
have to be adjusted and a different girt bar would be needed. Relevant SBs 25-1099 and SB
25-1055 are available via the RFC procedure to change from slide-rafts to slides, and from
slides to slide-rafts respectively

3. SLIDE AND SLIDE RAFT MODIFICATION DESCRIPTIONS

3.A - FORWARD / AFT PASSENGER DOOR SLIDES - PN D31516-Series & PN
D31517-Series
3.A.1 - Optional Re-entry Line
Within the door slide series there are two main dash number evolution rows. One for slides
with re-entry line (-103/-107/-111/-115) and one without the optional re-entry line (-105/109/-113/-117). The re-entry line allows the aircraft to be entered via a deployed slide.
The re-entry line can be requested for production aircraft via RFC/RMO procedure.
For in-service aircraft the re-entry line can be added by applying Air Cruisers Vendor SB
004-25-57
3.A.2 - Decorative Cover Attachment Principles
The major difference between the above mentioned dash numbers is the method by which the
decorative cover is held. The attachment methods operate on different principles (Velcro type
/ Dual Lock Fastener / Latch Type) and therefore they are not interchangeable. However, on
the condition that the decorative cover and the slide are replaced as a set so that it has the
same attachment type, these slides can be used on the door without additional modification.
For further details please see also paragraph 3.E for slides / slide rafts latch attachment
modification.
3.A.3 - Sill Support Tube Ingestion (CN F-2000-359-152 (B) R2)
Operators have reported slides not fully inflated after deployment. Investigations revealed
that the door slides mounted on the right hand side of the aircraft had a tendency to ingest the
sill support log fabric at the start of the inflation if the Velcro restraint for those support logs
becomes disengaged during the packing operation. The disengaged Velcro restraint could
subsequently allow the support logs to migrate within the pack. To ensure control of support
log position and to prevent ingestion, the existing Velcro restraint was replaced by a frangible
link.
This change was covered by MOD 28103 embodied on production from MSN 942 onwards
and in service aircraft with Airbus SB 25-1215, covering the Vendor SB 004-25-51. This
modification was made mandatory by CN F-2000-359-152 (B) R2 with 31 st August 2002
as compliance date.
3.A.4 - Slide hose retainer (CN F-2004-072 and AD 2004-26-07)
The slide manufacturer Air Cruisers reported 3 unsuccessful slide deployments in their
facility out of about 3,000. The deployments were unsuccessful due to rupture of the flexible
hose linking the slide reservoir to the aspirator. An inflation hose retainer was introduced in
production in order to prevent further flexible hose rupture and subsequently slide
unsuccessful deployments.

This change is covered by MOD 33428 (embodiment from MSN 2069), 33429 (embodiment
from MSN 1660), and 33511 (embodiment from MSN 2096), and in-service aircraft can be
modified per SB 25-1338, which covers VSB 004-25-72.
CN F-2004-072 has been issued in order to render the slide hose retainer embodiment
mandatory, with 30th of June 2007 as compliance date.
AD 2004-26-07 was issued to render the slide hose retainer embodiment mandatory, with
10th March 2008 as compliance date.
3.A.5 - Thermobonded slides
The slide manufacturer Air Cruisers introduced a new method for seam construction of
forward and aft slides which is called thermobonding. Thermobonding is a process of joining
coated fabrics by employing a continuous, mechanical feed that applies controlled heat and
pressure to weld the mating coated surfaces and to form the seam.
The thermobonded slides were introduced through MOD 34706 for slides equipped with the
re-entry line, MOD 34707 for slides not equipped with the re-entry line. MOD 34655 also
introduces slides with thermobonded seams, instead of glued seams.
In-service units are modified as per Air Cruisers VSB reference 004-25-74. Air Cruisers SIL
25-200 refers
3.A.6 Introduction of the wrapper:
During a scheduled maintenance, a slide did not deploy correctly because the slide pack drop
got stuck underneath the decorative cover, preventing it from dropping free to initiate the
inflation sequence. Investigation shows that no design deficiencies were identified. However
the damages found on the slide were related to the obstructed inflation at the door.
In order to control the pack deployment in its initial stages, it was decided to introduce a new
design with a wrapper.
The In-service aircraft can be modified via the Airbus SB 25-1B82, SB 25-1B83 and SB 251B84 covering the vendor SB 004-25-97. These SB are classified mandatory and an AD will
be issued to confirm this classification.

3.B - FORWARD / AFT PASSENGER DOOR SLIDE RAFTS - PN D30664/5-Series

3.B.1 - Decorative Cover Attachment Principles
The major difference between the dash number rows is the method by which the decorative
cover is held.
These attachment methods operate on different principles (Velcro type / Dual Lock Fastener /
Latch Type), and therefore they are not interchangeable. However, on the condition that the
decorative cover is also replaced so that it has the same attachment, these slide rafts can be
used on the door without additional modification.

For further details please see also para. 3.E for slides / slide rafts latch attachment
modification.
3.B.2 - Inflation Cable Protection
Investigation of two reported deployment failures showed that a misrouted inflation cable
could stop the inflation. There are three possible causes for an incorrectly routed inflation
cable:

Wrong routing of the inflation cable during overhaul

The inflation cable was partially pulled out of the inflation cable pocket during
handling
Attempts to hold back the door after initiation of the deployment sequence
introducing unknown elements to the dynamics of the deployment which have not
been therefore taken into account during slide design.

In order to prevent inflation cable misrouting the following corrective actions are available:

With revision 5 for CMM 25-61-20 the routing of the inflation cable was clarified
An additional step to show acceptable cable routing was added to the AMM 25-62-44,
page 401
An optional cable guide was designed and can be installed on slide rafts with VSB
004-25-56. Incorporation of this vendor SB will raise the slide raft part number
amendment to Amdt. 3

3.B.3 - Slide Raft packing improvement / Contoured packboard

Operators reported difficulties achieving the recommended slide raft pack size during the
overhaul / repacking sequence. Oversized slide raft packs could lead to frequent decorative
cover detachment and even difficulties to lock the aircraft door in the open position. The
occurrence of this phenomena increases over time due to slide raft pack setting / growth.
In order to gain more space within the slide raft pack a new recontoured packboard was
designed. This packboard utilises available space inside the door lining. This additional room
(approx. 1 inch depth) eases the packing sequence and provides more tolerance for the pack
setting. See TFU 25.62.00.016.
For production aircraft the new packboard is covered with MOD 27152 and first embodiment
was MSN 1390.
For in-service aircraft this change is covered by Air Cruisers SB 004-25-55.
3.B.4 - Slide raft installation at FWD doors - EASA AD F-2005-172 and FAA AD 200620-03
During slide raft deployment tests on different aircraft it has been noticed that on some
occasions the girt bar disengaged from the fittings of the aircraft forward passenger door sill
(left and right hand sides). Investigation revealed that the slide raft girt bar detachment was
caused by to an inboard directed load applied on the girt bar during opening of the forward
passenger door in armed mode. The result was that the girt bar moved inboard, preventing the

door sill spring loaded latches from coming back to their final locking position. The girt bar
subsequently escaped from the floor fittings. The girt bar inboard directed load was due to the
slide raft girt stiff portion being positioned inboard with regard to the housing of the centre
flange bearing of the girt bar arming/disarming shaft. This originated during the installation
of the slide raft on aircraft. Inspection of the affected slide raft revealed chaffing marks on the
slide raft girt, located at the interference between the girt and the centre flange bearing of the
passenger door girt bar arming/disarming shaft. It was also reported that the slide raft
arming/disarming lever was progressively harder and harder to set in the arming position, and
a spring effect was noticed i.e. the handle could reach the end of its travel but came backward
slightly when released.
Airbus issued the OIT reference 999.0068/04 in order to inform operators on the above
mentioned findings.
In addition, the Airbus SB A320-25-1394 was issued in order to provide operators with
inspection guidelines to ensure that slide rafts are correctly installed at FWD doors of their
A320 FAM. TFU 25.60.00.007 refers.
The SB 25-1394 has been rendered mandatory by the EASA AD F-2005-172 issued 21
December 2005, and by the FAA AD 2006-20-03 issued 14-Sept-2006.

3.B.5 - Modification of the cable guide and hose - EASA AD 2011-0160

There have been two occurrences where the inflation system was not able to actuate due to
the rotation of the cable guide in a direction which resulted in jamming of the inflation cable.
Additionally there has been one occurrence where the system was not able to deploy due to a
cracked inflation hose fitting.
In order to ensure a correct inflation, a new anti-rotation bracket has been developed and an
improved hose fitting has been released. These modifications are covered by Air Cruisers
VSB 004-25-85 and Airbus SB 25-1723 (A319, A320, A321) post MOD 151459 and SB 251724 (A318) post MOD 151502.
Both SB 25-1723 and 25-1724 has been rendered mandatory by the EASA AD 2011-0160
issued 26-AUG-2011 with compliance time (09-SEPT-2011 + 36 months).
3.B.6 introduction of the wrapper :
During a scheduled maintenance, a slide did not deploy correctly because the slide pack drop got
stuck underneath the decorative cover, preventing it from dropping free to initiate the inflation
sequence. Investigation shows that no design deficiencies were identified. However the damages
found on the slide were related to the obstructed inflation at the door.
In order to control the pack deployment in its initial stages, it was decided to introduce a new design
with a wrapper.
The In-service aircraft can be modified via the Airbus SB 25-1B81, covering the vendor SB 004-2596. This SB is classified mandatory and an AD will be issued to confirm this classification.

3.C - A318 / A319 / A320 OFFWING SLIDE (PN D31865-SERIES)

3.C.1 - Offwing Slide Lost in flight - CN 1995-186-071(B), AD 1999-232-132(B), CN F2001-380, AD 2004-06-13
Since 1995 operators have experienced 7 offwing slide losses in flight. Investigation of the
first two events revealed that the offwing slide loss was probably due to excessive internal
pressure on the blow out door of the enclosure, combined with possible damage /
delamination on the blow-out door.
As corrective action, the vendor Air Cruisers modified the packing procedure and designed a
new middle lacing cover in order to ensure a 5 mm gap between the slide and the inside of
the blow out door. This change is covered by MOD 24850 production embodiment MSN 344.
In-service aircraft are covered by Airbus SB 25-1156 (issued June 1995) and Vendor SB 00425-37. In addition Airbus AOT 25-09 was issued in January, 1995 in order to request a one
time inspection of the offwing slide enclosure / door for cracking and delamination. Airbus
SB 25-1161 covering AOT 25-09 was issued in June, 1995, providing damage limits and
repair instructions for the offwing slide enclosure / door (see also Vendor SB 004-25-38).
The DGAC decided to mandate the inspection by CN 1995-186-071(B). This mandatory
inspection is repetitive (every 18 months) until embodiment of SB 25-1156. This CN has
been superseded by AD 1999-232-132(B).

Investigation based on the next to last reported slide loss in flight (April 2000) lead to the
conclusion that the frangible washers were extruded when releasing the door of the enclosure.
Door cracking / delamination could not be connected to the slide loss. Therefore, in order to
structurally enhance the blow-out door, the frangible washers were replaced by solid ring
retainers. This change is covered by Airbus MOD 25844 embodied on production aircraft
from MSN 542. Vendor SB 004-25-42 covers in-service aircraft. In addition Airbus SB 251156 was revised to add the solid ring retainers. CN F-2001-380, with the 15th of September
2004 as mandatory date, and AD 2004-06-13, with the 30th of April 2004 as mandatory date,
were issued to request both modifications as the terminating fix for the repetitive inspection.

3.C.2 - Offwing Slide Enclosure / Door Delamination

As the modification listed under paragraph C.1 will not prevent cracking / delamination of
the offwing slide container / door, Airbus together with the vendor Air Cruisers developed an
all composite enclosure and door design.
The composite enclosure and door have successfully passed environmental tests to verify that
the new designs are highly resistant to delamination under actual field conditions. Therefore
these components will resolve the in-service delamination / cracking issues associated with
the previous hybrid composite / aluminium designs.
For production aircraft the all composite offwing slide is covered by MOD 30088
embodied from MSN 1160 onwards.
For field implementation the all composite door is available via vendor SB 004-25-53 and the
all composite enclosure is available via vendor SB 004-25-54.
In addition to eliminating the offwing slide delamination / cracking issues on the composite
enclosure, the new doors are fully interchangeable. The previous door and enclosure designs
did not allow interchangeability of door on enclosures due to manufacturing dimensional
variation of composite parts with extruded aluminium frames. Since the new door and
enclosure do not have an aluminium frame, manufacturing variation has been reduced. This
allows interchangeability of the new doors on composite enclosures. Although new doors can
be installed on existing enclosure, adjustments are necessary in this case due to dimensional
variation of those enclosures.
Please note that existing doors cannot be installed on composite enclosures since
incompatibility of the enclosure door seal with the dimensional variation of the existing doors
could lead to fluid leaks into the enclosure.
3.C.3 - Offwing Slide Container Modification - AD 2010-0210
During a scheduled test, a slide did not deploy because of the aspirator inlet guard caught on
the side of the enclosure assembly. Investigations show that the aspirator was pushed during
the initial stages of the deployment against the extrusion of the enclosure. The aspirator was
held back and the inflatable being pressurized, the aspirator was torn from the inflatable
causing the slide deflation.

It was decided to fix this issue to add a ramp made by epoxy between the interior wall of the
enclosure and the door frame extrusion. This eliminates the step created by the extrusion and
prevents the aspirator from being caught during the deployment;
Modification is covered by Air Cruisers VSB 004-25-84 and Airbus SB 25-1649 (post Mod
150368). The modification of the offwing enclosure is required by AD 2010-0210.
Note that the failure mode is only applicable for offwing slides prior to PN D31865-111/-112
which was introduced in early 2000 with Mod 30088, embodied from MSN 1160.
3.C.4 - Offwing Slide Fabric Ingestion - CN F-2001-380 and AD 2004-06-13
Operators reported cases of offwing slide inflation with low pressure and cases where during
inflation the aspirator was torn off from the inflatable. Detailed investigation of the reported
events showed that folds of the inflatable in front of the aspirator after repacking / overhaul
could lead to fabric ingestion. In addition, shifting of the aspirator during aircraft operation
could lead to aspirator blockage on the inside of the enclosure.
As a corrective action MOD 27275 (production embodiment MSN 838) and MOD 30829 (by
SB only) introduced an aspirator stand-off which should prevent the aspirator being blocked
inside the container. Inservice aircraft can be modified via Airbus SB 25-1265 covering
vendor SB 004-25-48. This change is rendered mandatory via CN F-2001-380, with the 15th
of September 2004 as compliance date, and AD 2004-06-13, with 30th of April 2004 as
compliance date.
In order to ease the offwing slide overhaul the vendor Air Cruisers has introduced a tool
which will prevent folds forming in front of the aspirator during repacking, plus a revision to
the packing procedure P11907 Rev J. Please refer to OIT 999.0092/01.
3.C.5 - Double Lip Seal
To prevent vibration the seal used on the belly fairing around the offwing slide was changed
to a "Double Lip Seal". For cosmetic reasons it was decided to replace as well the seal used
on the offwing slide container. Production aircraft are covered by MOD 27075 embodied
from MSN 789 onwards. For in-service aircraft this seal can be changed by applying vendor
SB 004-25-44. As mentioned earlier this change was made for cosmetic reasons only, and
therefore pre and post offwing slides are two way interchangeable
3.C.6 - Inflation Cable Mushroom Head
Until 1999, the end of the wire control sub assembly PN 213163-0 (of the reservoir/valve PN
60592-101) was manufactured from a simple steel alloy material. Following several reports
of bending and of breakage of the end of the cable, leading to unsuccessful deployment in
both automatic and manual mode, the manufacturing process was changed and this
component is now made of an improved steel alloy, which is also heat treated to provide
greater strength. Wire control sub assembly PN 213163-1 came into production with the
reservoir/valve assembly PN 60592-101 SN A6869.
In addition to the heat treatment to achieve greater strength, this component has also
deliberately been rendered more brittle. If the end of the inflation cable is bent, it can jam
inside the outer sheath and may block and prevent deployment of the slide. However by being

brittle, if the inflation cable is exposed to an exceptional shock, it will break immediately
(and not bend) therefore obliging the installation of a new, undamaged and not deformed part.
Please refer also to vendor Air Cruisers SIL 25-125.
AMM 25-62-46-401 was completely revised in Feb. 01/2003 to give specific cautions when
handling this part to avoid any damage especially to the mushroom head.

3.D - A321 DOOR 2 AND 3 SLIDES - PN 62292-SERIES & 62293-SERIES

3.D.1 - Slide lost in flight - CN F-1996-054-078 (B)and CN F-1998-292-117(B)
Between 1995 and 1997 operators reported four cases of A321 door 2/3 slides lost in flight.
Detailed investigation revealed two possible reasons for the slide losses.
The loss of two slides was most probably due to excessive internal pressure on the blow out
door of the enclosure, combined with possible damage on the door. As a corrective action CN
F-1996-054-078 (B), with the 23-March-1996 as effective date, was issued in March 1996 to
mandate a repetitive inspection as per Airbus AOT 25-11.
The terminating action is Airbus SB 25-1167 (MOD 25369 embodied on production from
MSN 364 onwards) covering vendor SB 005-25-04. This modification introduced a new
lacing cover and replaces the frangible washers on the blow out doors by solid ring retainers.
The two other cases were attributed to a leak in the tube run between the reservoir and the
slide. As corrective action the existing check valve (5 psig) was replaced by a 15 psig valve.
This will ensure that no cabin pressure (max 10 psig differences) enters the slide. This change
is made via MOD 27036 embodied on production from MSN 364 onwards. For in service
aircraft Airbus SB 25-1199 was issued in 1998 covering vendor SB 005-25-07. This change
was made mandatory via CN F-1998-292-117(B) issued in July 1998 with final compliance
date August 2001.
3.D.2 - Single aspirator modification - AD F-2005-155 and AD 2006-21-07
Several operators have reported broken slide enclosure doors during scheduled slide
deployments at door 2 and 3 of their A321.
During the slide deployment, it appears that the slide enclosure ball lock system may not have
been properly released before slide inflation. Engineering analysis showed that enclosure
door breakage is due to a slide inflation sequence issue, i.e. enclosure door release versus
slide inflation.
Contamination on the field such as paint on the surface of the ball locks can also be a
contributing factor. Therefore, it was decided to remove one aspirator leading to slight
inflation delay and then preventing enclosure door damage during slide deployment.
This modification is introduced in production through MOD reference 34989.
In the field, instructions to modify the A321 door 2 and 3 emergency slides will be
incorporated in Air Cruisers VSB's (VSB 005-25-15 for A321 door 3 and VSB 005-25-16 for

A321 door 2) and covered by Airbus SB 25-1416 (MOD number 34988), which is mandated
by EASA AD F-2005-155 issued 31-August-2005 and FAA AD 2006-21-07 issued 10
October 2006; TFU 25.60.00.005 refers.
3.E - DECORATIVE COVER ATTACHMENT ALL FORWARD /AFT DOOR
SLIDES / RAFTS
Several Operators have reported cases of slide and slide/raft decorative covers detaching from
the packboard. Investigation revealed that the dual lock fastener attachment introduced
in 1994 may lose effectiveness after a certain time in service. Due to cover flexibility the
cover detaches from the packboard when for example being hit by trolley carts.
As a corrective action a new latch type attachment for slides and slide/rafts has been
introduced. SB 25-1264 covering vendor Air Cruisers SB 004-25-61 (slides) and 004-25-62
(slide/rafts) has been issued in April 2002 to all operators. Subsequently this new latch type
attachment is installed in production as standard from July 2002; TFU 25.62.00.019 refers.
Airbus highly recommend to accomplish SB 25-1264 in order to benefit from the latest
technology decorative cover retention system. Further, for operators receiving new aircraft
with this improvement, the retrofit of in-service fleet will also assure full interchangeability
of all spare units. Please note that POST MOD and PRE MOD units are interchangeable with
the condition that the packboard and decorative cover are of the same standard.
3.F - ALL SLIDES / SLIDE RAFTS LIGHT IMPROVEMENT
LED technology is available for the evacuation systems, which have better service life than
the former incandescent light harnesses. LED harness addresses issues related to the
incandescent harnesses such as cloudy housings, black housings, and burned out bulbs. The
corroding of the flat conductor is also addressed by individually insulated round wire
conductor.
First application of the LED light harnesses was done on the A319/A320 off-wing slide with
PN D31865-111/-113 (Amdt 4) covered by MOD 30088 embodied from MSN 1160 onwards.
In service aircraft can incorporate the LED light harness on all existing offwing slides via
vendor SB 004-25-59.
In 2001, the LED harnesses were incorporated on the A321 door 2 and 3 slides with Amdt 1
from MSN 1403 onwards. In service aircraft can incorporate the LED light harness on all
door 2 and 3 slides via vendor SB 005-25-10 (door 2) and 005-25-11 (door 3).
Finally the LED harnesses will be incorporated on forward and aft slides and slide rafts on
the -300 series together with the new latch attachment design (see also para. 3.5 Decorative
Cover attachment). Corresponding vendor SBs are: 004-25-63 (slide-raft), 004-25-64 (slide).

4. CROSS-REFERENCES TABLE FOR DECORATIVE COVERS

Note: The colour codes for the decorative covers have been added for operators information;
however, due to the high number of different configuration, this information will not be
updated further to any decorative cover introduction and/or modification.
Note: The corresponding colour description can be found also in the Colour
Specification specific to each aircraft configuration.

Decorative Covers interchangeability:

The decorative covers with the same Air Cruisers PN are technically interchangeable. The
colors could be different, however it does not have any effect on the performance or technical
interchangeability
