The first people who came to the island of Ireland
were gatherer, human presence in this territory dating
back to the Mesolithic, in the year 8000 . But written
history of the island begins after the ancient Greek
explorers reached the region. Thus, Strabo and Diodorus
Siculus said that practiced cannibalism on the islanders.
Roman conquest of Britannia drew attention to the
powers of the ancient world to the region.
Comments Julius Caesar de Bello Gallico recorded in
the correct position to the west of Britannia, the island
that he called Hibernia. A century later, the governor of
Britannia, Gnaeus Julius Agricola, gave himself a captain
attached in order to submit Irish island. His plans have
not materialized.

The state covers an area occupying five-sixths (70 273 km) of the
island of Ireland (84 421 km), the rest of the island is occupied by
Northern Ireland. The island is bordered to the north and west of the
Atlantic and the Northeast Channel Nord (en). To the east, the Irish Sea
by a canal linking the Atlantic Ocean St. Gheorghe (en) and the Celtic
Sea to the southeast.
In the west, the landscape consists mainly of steep cliffs, hills and
mountains. Central plains are covered with glacial deposits of clay and
sand, and several lakes and extensive wetlands.
The highest point is Carrauntoohil (en) (1,038 m), located in the
mountain range's Macgillycuddy Reeks (en) from the southwest.
Shannon River (en), which runs through the central plain, is the longest
river in Ireland, with a length of 386 km.
West coast is more rugged as the Eastern, with numerous islands,
peninsulas, capes and bays.
