COLOR OF MY SUNGLASSES

My sunglasses are colored by the idea that the world would be a better place than it is
today if the humanity learnt resolved to genuinely embrace diversity. The reality that people
should learn to live is that over four billion people in the world cannot be uniform along the
many things that define personality, such as worldview, culture, value and belief systems among
others. The worldview of a person in America, for instance, is shaped by different factors than
those that shape the worldview of a person in Japan. One of the factors that define the
worldviews of these two people is the culture. If these two people switched environments for a
given duration, each one of them would struggle to fit in the new environment because his/her
worldview, which is partly a product of the cultural formations, is not likely to enable to function
optimally because the prevailing conditions are totally strange. The American would need to
adapt to the new conditions that Japan presents, while the Japanese would have to achieve some
degree of conformity to the new conditions that America presents. For each of them, adjustments
cannot take place in a short while.
My sunglasses are highly flexible ones, and that implies that I am always ready to tolerate
other peoples ways of doing or viewing things even if they are different than the way I do or
view the same things. A cohesive world cannot be realized when everyone has rigid sunglasses.
There is a rise in circumcision prevalence in the United States. WHO statistics indicate that an
estimated 79% of males aged 25 years and below are circumcised. The United Kingdom, on the
other hand, has a male circumcision prevalence of less than 6%. An American with a rigid
sunglass is likely to assume that all males should be circumcised. Likewise, a British person with
a rigid sunglass will tend to be opposed to male circumcision. A third individual from either the
United States or the United Kingdom with flexible sunglasses will easily understand the basis of
perceptions about male circumcision in the two countries, which then inform the prevalence

statistics. The third individual would be me because my sunglasses are flexible and colored by
the idea that diversity must be genuinely embraced. This way, it is easy for a Briton to live
among Americans without having to question their perceptions and practices. He/she should
instead concentrate on copying with the conditions.
The sunglasses that humans use to develop beliefs by viewing the prevalent factors upon
which the beliefs depends will always determine the extent to which one is enabled to find
meaning in the beliefs of other people who operate within a different set of factors. Where one
has adjustable sunglasses, they will easily view and interpret the factors that inform the beliefs of
other people, and therefore be able to accommodate them with their belief systems. It enables
one to adapt quickly in an environment that presents them with new cultural dimensions. This, by
far, is the surest way of attaining tolerance for the culture and beliefs that are different than ones
own.
