Non-comm
municable Diseasess (NCDs) account for
f nearly
half of all deaths in Indiaa. Cardiovascular diseases,
cancers, ch
hronic respiratory ddiseases, diabetes and
a other
NCDs aree estimated to accoount for 60 per ceent of all
deaths in India.
I
Considering the high cost of medicines
m
and longeer duration of treaatment, NCDs con
nstitute a
greater fin
nancial burden espeecially to the loweer income
groups. Sttudies carried out inn India have shown
n that the
cost of treaating NCDs such aas diabetes has doub
bled from
1998 to 20
005 particularly am
mong urban househ
holds and
likely to in
ncrease further. W
With losses due to premature
p
deaths du
ue to heart diseasee, stroke and diab
betes are
projected to increase cumulaatively, and India stands to
lose 237 billion dollars duringg the decade 2005-2015.The
potentially
y productive years of life lost (PPYLL
L) due to
CVDs in the
t age group of 355-64 was 9.2million
n in 2000
and is exp
pected to rise to 17.9 million in 20
030. This
estimate is more than the ccombined estimated
d loss in
China, Ru
ussia, USA, Portuggal, and South Afrrica (16.2
million).Sttress and environm
mental factors conttribute to
high diseaase burden of NC
CDs which are modifiable
m
factors an
nd can be controllled to reduce inciidence of
NCDs and
d better outcomes foor those having NC
CDs. Most
of the NC
CDs like Cancer, D
Diabetes, and Cardio
ovascular
Diseases(C
CVD), Mental Disoorders and problem
ms relating
to ageing are not only chronic in nature but also may
have long pre-disease periodd where effective life style
changes can
c turn around health status of ind
dividuals.
Therefore,, deliberation and discussion in thiis regard
would con
ntribute for the exxisting level of kn
nowledge.
Such deliberations thus ccontribute for prrevention,
managemeent of NCDs and redducing its burden.
