Procedure

1. Review drawing M101 Mechanical Plan for the Stuart-Engals II First Floor Medical
Office Upfit. Using four different colored pencils or highlighters, shade each of the
following with a different color.
Air handling units
Supply ducts
Return ducts (including ducts that bring in outside air)
Vent ducts (that vent directly to the outside)

2. Create a key to identify the HVAC equipment according to color.

3.
4.
5. Refer to Stuart-Engals II First Floor Medical Office Upfit drawings as necessary to
complete the following. You may need to perform additional research to answer the
questions.
What type of HVAC system is used in the Stuart-Engals II First Floor
Medical Office? a forced air system
How are the air handling units attached to the structure? metal joist support
them

How many zones (separate systems) are included in the first floor HVAC
design? How can you tell?5 because there is five ahus
What types of heating/cooling units are used in the HVAC design? Where
are the units located?heat pumps and they are located near the air handling unit
Where are fans located in the HVAC design? What types of space(s) are
ventilated using fans?the fans are located near the front of the ceiling exhaust
grille. the space that is ventilated is the most populated spaces.

What type of piping is required to transfer the heat between the air handling
unit and the heating/cooling unit?14x12
What other piping is required for the heating/cooling units? What is its
purpose?12x12 16x12 so the air can move faster
How are air handling units and heat pumps powered? Where is this
information shown? electricity
With which code does the mechanical design for the Stuart-Engals II First
Floor Medical Office design comply?2009 IECC

6. Assume that you will use a forced air HVAC system with heat pumps for the Keystone
Library Renovation. Mark up your Keystone Library Renovation floor plan to show a
preliminary design for the HVAC system including supply, return, exhaust ductwork, and
air handling units.
7. Revise your Keystone Library Renovation 3D model to include only the heat pumps
needed for your preliminary design.

Conclusion
1. What is important to consider when designing an HVAC system? It is very important
to consider what the purpose and expectations of the buildings usage will be.

2. How does the HVAC system affect the design of the building structure? When
designing the HVAC system, an architect must allow for sufficient space for the
ducts and such, which may require extra space in the ceiling. The architect must
also know what the building is intended for so that the ducts may be properly
placed.

3. How does an engineer know the requirements for mechanical design of an HVAC
system? The engineer must research the requirements and codes for the
mechanical design of an HVAC system and work that into his design and
installation.

4. Why is it important for architects to be aware of how mechanical systems are

designed or constructed? It is important for the architect to be aware of how the
mechanical systems are designed and constructed so that he or she can account
for the requirements and properly design his systems so that they will be efficient
and sufficient for the structure.
5. What information must an architect provide to a mechanical engineer to ensure
proper design and placement of the mechanical systems? The architect must
provide his or her designs, plans, and research on the requirements and building
to the mechanical engineer so that the engineer understands how the system
should be designed and placed.
