properties of Solids.
Prior knowledge of learners
Students require prior experience from Year 1 with:
Science Understanding Chemical Sciences
Everyday materials can be physically changed in a variety of ways (ACSSU018)
Students require prior experience from Year 2 with:
Science as a Human Endeavour Nature and development of science
Science involves asking questions about, and describing changes in, objects and events (ACSHE034)
Use and influence of science
People use science in their daily lives, including when caring about the environment and living things
(ACSHE035)
Science Inquiry Skills: Questioning and predicting, Planning and conducting, Processing and analysing data
and information & Evaluating Communicating

Declarative (knowledge) objectives

Procedural (skill) objectives

The learner will know:

Identify common properties of solids
Understand what a solid is
Use properties to explain and understand why
sand is a solid

The learner will be able to:

understand the properties of solids, including
powders.
Understand that powders are solids Identify
common properties of Solids
Investigate the properties of sand

Links to Curriculum
Science as a Human Endeavour: Nature and development of science
(ACSHE013) Science involves exploring and observing the world using the senses
Science Inquiry Skills: Communicating
(ACSIS012) Share observations and ideas
Planning and conducting
(ACSIS011) Explore and make observations by using the senses
Processing and analysing data and information
(ACSIS233) Engage in discussions about observations and use methods such as drawing to represent ideas
Science Understanding: Chemical sciences
(ACSSU003) Objects are made of materials that have observable properties

Evidence of learning
Can the student: understand the and identify common properties of solids, including powders?

Classroom Management Strategies

Use of the Essential skills for Classroom Management

And behaviour wall, Class chosen negative and positive consequences

Resources
IWB, Laptop, projector, short video, power-point presentation & worksheets.

Differentiation strategies
Start where students are at and differentiate teaching and learning to support the learning needs of all
students. Plan and document how you will cater for individual learning needs:
The learning experiences can be differentiated by increasing:
the frequency of exposure for some students
the intensity of teaching by adjusting the group size
the duration needed to complete tasks and assessment.
For guided and/or independent practice tasks:
student groupings will offer tasks with a range of complexities to cater for individual learning needs
rotational groupings allow for more or less scaffolding of student learning.

Lesson Body
Delivering the content
through specific
strategies

Explain the lesson concept on the IWB

WALT: further understand the properties of solids, including powders
TIB: These concepts are the basis of science

Introduce the topic Exploring Solids

(Whole class discussion to assess prior knowledge; asking probing question to
explore the scientific language and key concepts)

View the power point on Solids

Using the pause in between slides to discuss the ideas and use probing
questions to find students prior knowledge
Introduce the idea of sand and ask whether it is solid or a liquid and why.
Watch a short video Solids
Discussion on what the video was all about, identifying key words and concepts
that will be explored.
Discuss the concept of Solids and their properties including sand and powders.
Student complete worksheet, on solids identifying the properties of several
solids using their senses for (play dough, a tennis ball, a mug, a pencil & a
teddy bear).
Discuss finding as a whole class
Fast finishers can come and have a look at sand through a magnifying glass to
see that it is made up of many little solids.

Lesson Conclusion
Concluding activities
Summarizing the
lesson

Recap and revise the lesson objectives (WALT),

referring to the learning wall to recap the key terms and language discovered
relating to solids and their properties including sand and other powders.

Evaluation / Reflection
- Excellent recap of yesterdays lesson to consolidate understanding of properties of liquids, referring to the
diagram students had in their books.
- Learning intention clearly displayed and sequence of lesson referred to. Students completed worksheet
successfully.
- Only a short lesson time due to library and made the most of the time available, focusing on the
properties of solids clearly.
- Descriptive encouraging of students working well was used throughout the lesson.
