Insects such as bees, ants, wasps and termites live in colonies. They are known as social insects. They live together in a large cooperating group with other members of their own species. The members in such a community are dependent on one another in their daily lives. Man has for centuries observed these tiny creatures, particularly bees. Insect communities have existed long before humans. They are very well-arganised and have a high complexity level. These insect communities work together to perform a number of tasks. Taking care of their young, building of a nest or hive, producing food and protecting their communities are some of the tasks performed. Their division of labour and responsibilities are likened to a busy modem factory. Unlike humans who have the freedom of independence, the social insect cannot live like a hermit. It must join with its fellow members in order to survive. So if you were to be an ant or a bee, you will have no choice about what to do with your life. Your job is regulated to suit the needs of the community. ‘As a matter of fact, the social insect community could well be compared to a giant machine.
