Description of Some Coursework for MSSW

Direct Practice 1 covered ethics and legal issues of counseling.

Direct Practice 11 Learned to identify mental disorders such depression, depressive


disorder, bipolar, phobias, PTSD, substance abuse, eating disorders,
sexual disorders. Learned symptoms of each, medications taken and
their side effects, and effective interventions with clients to deal with
their problems.

Couples Learned problems couples face and how to intervene.

CBT Learned principals of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Constructivism to apply


in interventions with individuals and couples. Term paper on treating depression in a
returning veteran who acquired permanent hearing loss from an exploded I.E.D.,
including couples counseling with his wife, learning to accept his hearing loss and form
a new identity, learning coping skills to deal with his changed life.

Aging and Society Gerontology. Learned the problemsphysical, mental, emotional


and economicalthat adults face as they age, and appropriate interventions for them.
Learned of resources to help them and options to decisions they may need to make.

Each of the courses required a research paper and demonstration of an intervention.

Internships

Rusk State Hospital Rusk, TX. Completed the required training and orientation for
working with adults who are a danger to themselves and others. Sat in on daily treatment
team meetings to discuss patients. Did Case Management to find appropriate placement
upon the patients discharge. Attended and participated in training sessions for patients,
such as anger management.
400 clock hours in summer 2008.

Trinity Mother Frances Hospital Tyler, TX. Learned Case Management for patients on
the trauma and surgical floor. Learned CM in the mothers and infants wing, which
included NICU. Participated in interviewing and CM in the Womens unit for expectant
mothers. 420 clock hours in summer 2009.

Community Counseling Center UTArlington. Counseled clients from the community


in various issues, including depression. Counseled a couple who are Deaf and conducted
the session in sign language. Additionally, this couple has limited English skills because
they are from Pakistan. Was able to help them successfully. Ratings from the clients
consistently were a 9 or 10 (with 10 being the highest score). Also received weekly
training for two hours in SFT (Solution Focused Therapy) and discussed how to apply it
to our clients. 100+ clock hours in fall 2009.
