identified the continents correctly?

Components

Motivation
(opening/
introduction/
engagement)

Describe teacher activities

AND
student activities
for each component of the lesson. Include important higher order thinking questions and/or
prompts.
Before we jump into out lesson, I want to show
you a few pictures.
Pull up pictures
These pictures are from when my brother and I
went to visit our friend in South Korea. Have any
of you ever heard of South Korea before?
One or two students give answers
Flip through some more pictures.
South Korea is a country on the continent of Asia.
Have any of you heard the word continent before,
One or two students try to define the word
or do you know what it means?
continent
A continent is a large area of Earths land. Were
going to watch a YouTube video that talks about
continents. This video is pretty silly and funny, so
it might make you giggle. But do your best to pay
attention to what the man is saying, because after
youre going to have to work with a partner to
remember what he told us!
Pull up YouTube video

After the video ends:

Okay, now I want you to turn to your neighbor
and see if you can name all 7 continents. When you
think you have them all give me a thumbs up!
After groups are done ask for volunteers, Which
group thinks they can name all 7 continents?

One group tries to name all of them.

Does any other group want to give it a try?

Another group gives it a try.

Awesome job! Now, we are going to work on

making our own world maps. I need all of you to
go to your cubby, get your scissors, glue stick, and
colored pencils. You have one minute to do this.
Who can remind everyone what three things you
need to grab from your cubby?
On your desks you have an empty map. There
isnt anything on here. You also have some pages
with the seven continents on them. We are going to
work together to build our maps. Were all going to
do this together, so dont work ahead. Ill be giving
directions as we go, so make sure you listen closely
so you dont miss anything.
First, lets find North America. Look through your
papers and try to find North America. When you
find it, hold it up.

Development
(the largest
component or
main body of
the lesson)

Great job! Now, you can cut it out, but wait to glue
it down.
Who can come up here to my map and show me
where I should place North America?
Awesome! Can all of you write North America on
the shape you just cut out? Now, you may glue
north America down on your map.

South America: The largest country in South

America by far is Brazil. It covers about half of the
continents land mass. At approximately 202
million, Brazils population is also the largest on
the continent.
Europe: There are more than 200 different
languages spoken in Europe.
**Help students make the dotted line to separate
Europe and Asia.
Africa: The Sahara is the largest desert in the
world and is bigger than the continental USA.
Australia: Australia is sometimes known as the
'island continent'
1-19-13

Volunteer comes and helps me place N.A. on my

map.

North America is the only continent that has every

kind of climate.
Continue doing this for the 6 other continents.

Students hold up north America (most students

should hold it up before we move on)

Antarctica: Antarctica is the coldest, windiest,

Different students help place continents on my map

highest, and driest continent on Earth.

Asia: The worlds highest peak is here, Mount
Everest.
Remember when I showed you pictures of myself
in South Korea? Does anybody remember which
continent I said South Korea is a part of?
Closure
(conclusion,
culmination,
wrap-up)

Students will answer Asia

Nice work! Now, we will be coming back to these

maps several times, so make sure your names are
on the back of the maps. I will come collect them,
and I want you to put your scissors, glue sticks, and
colored pencils away. You have one minute to put
your things away and then I want you to come back
to your seats. Go!
Your reflection about the lesson, including evidence(s) of student learning and engagement, as well as ideas for improvement
for next time. (Write this after teaching the lesson, if you had a chance to teach it. If you did not teach this lesson, focus on the
process of preparing the lesson.)
