Ben and Jerrys Directed Essay

I agree with Freeses statement. I believe that if you have been able to
prosper and to have found success whether it has been through luck,
through a personal business or through another company that you should
use your success to help those who havent been so fortunate. We cannot
ignore social issues and expect them to fix themselves. A lot of people arent
heard but when we have power both financially and socially, we should use
that power to voice unpopular opinions and help those who arent often
heard. We have to remember to be thankful for what we have and remember
that we couldnt do what we have done without the earth and the other
members of society. If there is no earth, then nothing matters because with
no earth there is no way for mankind to survive, thus we are all dead if the
earth is dead. In regards to the social conditions, we should use our
businesses and our successes to create a world that we are proud of and we
want to grow a future in. Ben and Jerrys in particular is a strong brand with a
loyal following, and a company that has shown tremendous support for
minority groups, environmental relief efforts and a future for America where
everybody is welcome and equal. I applaud their efforts. It can be scary to
risk losing consumers whose views dont align with those of the company,
but these risks are necessary because, as I stated before, Ben and Jerrys has
a voice that can speak louder than the average member of society. If I ever
become fortunate enough to own a business that allows me to find much

success, I hope to be able to use my success to help others become

successful.
As a successful business owner, you have been given great power, but
it is up to you what you do with it. You can use that power for selfish reasons
or you can use it to ease the lives of those who havent been as successful as
you. You can invest in the fights for the rights of minorities or for the fight
against global warming. You can use products to raise money for non-profit
organizations that you believe in or you can deepen your pockets. But what
is your life worth if you do not value the lives of others at the same amount?
While I am not a religious person, I do believe in karma and the idea that you
should always give back and help those who have been less fortunate than
you. It is not the fault of others that they have been unable to break the
glass ceilings that have been placed over their heads or that they have been
trapped in the poverty-stricken world that they were born in. As somebody
who was able to shatter that ceiling or move into a strong financial situation,
you should remember that there are always going to be people who werent
as lucky as you. There is a major aspect of luck in life. Luck and connections
are half of what makes us successful. There is, of course, an element of hard
work and dedication, but there is also luck. Luck placed us with our families,
got us into college and will be a factor in how our careers pan out.
That is why I believe that, yes, businesses do have a duty to improve
the conditions around us. Any success that a business has had means that
they have been fortunate, and their fortune should be recognized and that

business should remember that not everybody has outcomes that were as
favorable. When we can remember this and when we can remember that we
are lucky, we will ideally recognize the struggles of others and aid them so
that they too may one day be so fortunate.
