Integration of Faith and Learning

As a Christian, I feel that I am called to live out my life in a
Christ-like behavior. I believe that God should be given the glory in all
that I do, which made integrating my faith at my school difficult
because I was at a public school. Being at a public school limited the
type of things I could do and say in my classroom, compared if I was
teaching at a Christian school. So I was challenged when making my
unit, and teaching in front of students of how I can still have my
worldview of praising and giving glory to God without infringing on any
of the boundaries that come with teaching at a public school. However,
I felt that the unit that I made reflects how I view the world and reflects
my faith.
To begin, my classroom subject was U.S. History, which I believe
is one of the most important subjects covered in school. History covers
more than just dates and battles, it covers social issues, the economy,
and religion, among other aspects all in one subject. History also plays
a huge role in peoples lives to understand why things are happening in
the world today. So many of todays issues, can be traced back years
and years to the root of the problem. My unit, which is the Articles of

Confederation, and the U.S. Constitution isnt as much events that took
place, but plans for the government of the United States. To me, I feel
that understanding these documents allows us, citizens of the United
States, to understand issues that we are dealing with today.
Looking at the news, there is always an event that started from
what the Constitution either does or does not say, for example, the
Second Amendment is something that constantly is debated over and
over again today. The Bible calls Christians to be good citizens,
respecting the government, but ultimately giving full power to God. I
believe that the only way to be a good citizen is to be knowledgeable
about the government that we are under. Understanding what the
Constitution says, and the reasons behind why they say that are very
important in becoming a good citizen.
In my lesson, I covered both the Articles of Confederation, and
the Constitution extensively because I believe that knowing about our
government is important to be a good citizen. Knowing about these
documents, students can see, and understand some of the issues that
come up today, but all started back in 1787. Christians have important
role when it comes to governing a country. We need to pray for the
leaders of this country, now more than ever. But we also need to get
involved. As Christians I feel that we cant just sit by and let bad things
happen.

I tried to incorporate that type of thinking into my unit. Students

will obtain the knowledge about the Articles of Confederation and the
Constitution, but they also will reflect on this knowledge. Reflection
questions like, are these laws fair? what moral questions do these
laws bring up? and looking at arguments in todays world that come
from the Constitution.
I believe that all subjects taught by a teacher can be done from a
Christian perspective, even in a public school. Teachers have a
responsibility to teach their students to see the bigger picture in
subjects, and I think I did that in my unit plan for the Articles of
Confederation and the Constitution.
