Course Description
Physics is the study of matter and its interactions. As such, Physics deals with everything in
physical reality. This is an introductory course on the basic fundamentals of Physics. This
calculus-based course will include some basic integration, differentiation, and discussion of the
use of differential equations. Students will learn about the following topics: space and time,
kinematics, forces, energy, momentum, conservation laws, rotational motion, torques, simple
harmonic motion, waves, fluid, and (if time permits) basic thermodynamic laws.

Read the chapter assigned for that class prior to class. It is also very useful to read ahead.
Grading Policy
Final grades are determined from a combination of the below items. Grades will be
curved. The level of your class participation is based on the instructor's assessment.
Class Project
LIVo of the final grade will be based on your participation and quality of a class project.
This project will be defined by your project group, developed outside of class time, and
presented to the class on the last class day. The presentation may be electronic using the screen
projector or simply a verbal tutorial. Hardware demonstrations are strongly encouraged!
The project group will be selected by the instructor after the first exam. The project may
focus on any area of physics spanning Chapters 1 through 20 of the textbook. A11 students within
Once identifted by your team, your proposed project topic rnust be approved by the instructor to
ensure project safety and appropriateness.
The amount of time spent on the group project should be roughly equal to that of a take home
exam. Hint: Keep it simple. A clear, clean demonstration of a concept along with a
straightforward class presentation is far better than a complex but poorly executed project.
The grade for the project is based on the quallty of your 10 minute in-class presentation of the
project, the level of effort expended, and a short (typically three page) written report
summarizing the effort.
Course Policies
Communication
Your privacy and security are valued by the instructor, the TA, and the University.
Outside of class, communicate with the instructor or TA via electronic mail. Correspond using
your UTD-provided student account. (See below). kaving phone messages is not a reliable
method of communication. Email not received from your assigned University account may not
be read or acted upon. Responses to individual emails will generally be to the originating
account. Do not provide phone numbers or mailing addresses inyour conespondence.
Exams
The exams will be take-home unless an in-class exam is waranted. The final exam will
be take home. A calculator or computer will likely be required. The exams will cover all material
presented in class and other material that you will research for the exams. Exam solutions must
be legible! Illegible answers will receive zero credit without appeal.
The periodic exams (3) are generally non-cumulative but may include problems from
earlier sections of the course. The final exam will be cumulative and will be based on the entire
body of work covered in class or assigned outside of class.
You are responsible for all reading assignments even if we do not discuss them in class.
Your answers to homework and exam questions must show your comprehension of the material.
Copyright rules
All information provided by the instructor in the form of paper or electronic
documentation is copyrighted. These include exams, homework assignments, supplementary i
materials, and problem solutions. You may retain these documents for your use, but you may not
share them, post them, sell them, or otherwise transfer them to anyone or another machine other
than your own. These materials are provided strictly for your benefit during the duration of the
course.

Homework will be assigned in class. On-line homework also will be automatically
scheduled. Extra credit of almost any kind is acceptable, but requires approval. Extra credit
suggested by the instructor is automatically pre-approved. With approval, you may suggest extra
credit assignments for the entire class, groups of students, or yourself. You are free to turn in
assignments early by direct handover to the TA. Solutions to key problems will be provided.
Teaming
Teaming on homework is highly encouraged. If you chose to team, all students must sign
the solution paperwork. Do not divide effort. Work all problems as a team. Teaming on the
exams is strictly prohibited. Plagiarism in any form is strictly prohibited.
Academic Integrity
The faculty expects from its students a high level of responsibility and academic honesty.
Because the value of an academic degree depends upon the absolute integrity of the work done
by the student for that degree, it is imperative that a student demonstrate a high standard of
individual honor in his or her scholastic work.
Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, statements, acts or omissions related
to applications for enrollment or the award of a degree, and/or the submission as one's own work
or material that is not one's own. As a general rule, scholastic dishonesty involves one of the
following acts: cheating, plagiarism, collusion and/or falsifying academic records. Students
suspected of academic dishonesty are subject to disciplinary proceedings.
Plagiarism, especially from the web, from portions of papers for other classes, and from
any other source is unacceptable and will be dealt with under the university's policy on
plagiarism (see general catalog for details).
Email Use
The University of Texas at Dallas recognizes the value and efficiency of communication
between faculty/staff and students through electronic mail. At the same time, email raises some
issues concerning security and the identity of each individual in an email exchange. The
university encourages all official student email correspondence be sent only to a student's U.T.
Dallas email address and that faculty and staff consider email from students official only if it
originates from a UTD student account. This allows the university to maintain a high degree of
