I am producing an art based magazine, called The Under.

I had originally had two ideas about the magazine, it was either going to be a cartoon based
magazines or the art magazine. I chose the art idea, firstly because of the idea of audience. The
set idea was to appeal this to a young audience around our age group, meaning 16-19. I
believed the cartoon idea would have been too childish for teenagers, and it wouldnt have been
easy to aim it at that demographic. Such with cartoons being associated with children, would
have made it harder to create an appeal to teenagers for this genre. Also because I didnt hold a
whole hearted interest in the subject, rather I just enjoy them. I realised that I rather didnt care
about the production of cartoons, which would probably be a massive influence in the magazine.
Also I rather didnt know that much about cartoons or animation in general, let alone have an
interest in it. So therefore I went more towards my preferred idea of art, because art has a
massive hold over my life. It has sentimental value with me, and also I have a strong interest in
it. I know a lot about the art world, the different aspects it holds, what genres it has within it, so I
believed it would be a lot more beneficial for me and the readers of the magazine.
The genre of my magazine is more of an interest based magazine. I chose this genre because
it's an interest subject, you have to hold an interest to buy it directly, and that it will be filled with
information about the subject, rather than anything else.
My target audience would notably be young people, who have an interest in the art world. This
is because firstly, it's an art magazine, there has to be some form of interest there. Secondly the
young people aspect, is because I believe that it is a new area to explore. The art world is
considered rather professional and for adults, but I think it's important to have a space for young
people, to also explore that type of media. It doesnt have any connotation towards religion or
gender being that art is open to all no matter sex or religion. The socio economic groupings for
this magazine would be interesting, being for B group and E. These two groups are completely
separate from each other, but with it being a young person's art magazine, it could apply to the
creative types who have been place in group B, and the young people, namely students, in
group E. Geodemographic also doesnt hold an impact because it's not location centeralled, you
dont have to be in a specific location to understand its contents. If we were to look deeper into
the audience types, and we looked at the psychographics, it would be noted that this magazine
would appeal to aspirers and reformers. This is because aspirers are attracted to image, rather
than contents, so a pretty magazine with art on the front is probably very appealing to them.
Reformers seek enlightenment, chooses things for quality which is what this magazine is based
around, good quality art work.
The topic I have chosen to look at for the double spread is a particular artist called Agnes
Cecile. I plan on representing her artwork and who she is. I decided to do this because it
strongly represents the type of thing I would put in this type of magazine, previewing young and
upcoming artists. I will also include an brief analysis piece in order to provide a small in look for
the people reading the magazine.
The language style, cannot be too complicated. If I involved language that was above the
reading level of college grade, then people would not be able to partake in the magazine. They
would lose interest because it doesnt make sense to them, so therefore it is important to keep it
simple. But we cannot keeps it too simple, as to involve slang, because then the magazine

would lose the professional feel that I want for it. The middle ground between these two, is
absolutely perfect.
If I had an opportunity to interview a person for the magazine, it would be the featured artist but
she lives in Italy, so it is hard to reach her. I may also interview my art teacher due to the fact
that he has had previous experience in the art world, being an artist himself.
Pictures used for these such interviews would be a picture of the artists themselves, their
artwork, their surrounding environment, exhibits their in or have been in. This is just to give the
reader a personal feel around the artist, by seeing where they work or what they actually look
like.
The colours used for the magazine will be black and white, to create a desired professional feel,
that comes through walking in a gallery. Also the use of plain colour means that the art stands
out more which is the ideal purpose of the magazine, to present art in its best form.
For typography, I would use sans serif type font, as to maintain a more modern type of look.
Serif on its own is used for newspaper and more formal magazines, and since is in an interest
magazine filled with information it would be appropriate to use a formal looking font. But as I
want it to appeal to younger people, I want it to stand out to them as a modern but interest
based magazine.
Graphology in the magazine will be simple and minimalistic, with no puffer effects or headlines
put over the main cover image, because I want that to be the main focus. I will most likely put
things like the masthead and cover lines at the top of the page, then underneath the main cover
image, and then at the bottom will be the barcode and issue information etc. For the double
spread, it will also be simplistic, with mainly pictures on the page and captions underneath it.
The unique selling point to my magazine is the fact it is for young people. It's not a gossip
magazine, it's not a high scale professional magazine, it's showing their interests in a simplistic
form, which isnt degrading to young people. There art many art magazines out there as a
whole, in fact the hype that used to surround the art world has died down in comparison to what
it was a couple of decades ago, so it harder for people to create a solid interest in it if they arent
talented themselves. This magazine won't require you to be an artist, it doesnt exclude, it rather
will try to intake everyone who has an interest.
My magazine will meet the needs of the audience, by remaining consistent in the content it
produces while still remaining open to criticism and change. This means that the content I will
put out will be of a high quality, it will never attempt to pander to the audience, but will not be
open to change, for example if a part of the audience isnt satisfied with it, it will be killed so
something new can emerge. Also I will remain consistent with the ideology of the magazine,
meaning that since it is an art magazine, it will stay focused on the art world and anything that
contains, it wont magically stray away and become a fashion magazine.
The main legal and ethical issues I will have to consider are the ones concerning copyright,
freedom of expression, and the use of explicit images. Copyright is large portion of the art world
in general, let alone the print world, due to the fact that whatever an artist produces they can put
their legal stamp on it and say you have to pay to look at this or use an image of it. If an artist
has done so, then they can sue any publication or sites or advertisement etc, that uses their
work, or something that is derivative of their work. This is an easy issue to avoid, if you first off
ask the artist for permission, or find an artist who do not have copyright of their work. While it

may seem wrong to take an artist's work, a good way to still establish the moral high ground is
through looking giving them credit, by putting there name or referring to their proper means of
communication, or website.
Freedom of expression is where you are given the right to express freely your opinions and
views, through speech, writing or any other forms of media. This is applied through a desired
part of my magazine which goes into analysis of the artwork at hand, which also includes the
opinions of critics, which in part is freedom of expression. If critics are involved, they in turn
retain the right of freedom of expression, and the same goes for any part that may be valued as
an opinion. This protects their right to say as they desire without it being taken as fact, or it
being taken to offence.
The use of explicit images is also an factor that will be involved with the magazine, due to the
fact that art is often explicit, depicting scenes of violence, nudity, sexual acts etc. A way to avoid
censorship is through only putting the explicit content inside the magazine, rather than on the
outside and to make sure the magazine is put upon a higher shelf in to avoid children trying to
reach it.
