4 THE VOORHEES SUN NOV. 16-22, 2016

Friedman elected to Voorhees Township Committee

By JULIE SHANNON
The Sun
In what turned out to be a contentious campaign, Voorhees
Committee incumbent Mike
Friedman defeated challenger
Thomas Fanelli. Friedman, the

lone Republican on committee,

edged his Democratic rival 5,414
(51.75 percent) to 5,043 (48.21 percent) for the three-year term.
Im very happy and truly honored and privileged to be able to
represent Voorhees for another
three years, Friedman said.

Fanelli thinks a combination of

things led to this election not ending up in his favor.
It was just crazy out there
with everything going on, Fanelli said. Democrats thought
Hillary would pull them up, and it
went the other way. Trump got

some votes and ballots on his side.

Ive been on the planning board
for a long time, which isnt a highprofile position. Maybe I didnt
have the name recognition that
Mike Friedman had. Some of the
districts said we did better than
we thought we would. Others
thought we should have done better. It was a very interesting election this year.
Campaign manager Brian McGovern said Friedman made it
his mission from the very beginning to get out in the community,
knocking on more than 5,000
doors every time hes run for office. This year, his mission was to
reach even more people.
This time it was close to
7,000, McGovern said. People
got to meet him face-to-face and
know what hes about and what
he stands for.
Besides his community reach,
Friedman said his experience
made the difference.
I think Ive earned their
trust, he said. I think their
votes were based on record of
achievement, not taglines and
promises. I think the voters had
confidence in me because theyve
seen the work effort, not only in
the campaign but work effort Ive

put in over the past six years. Im

thrilled they have the confidence
to put me back for another three
years.
Having Donald Trump as the
Republican nominee in the presidential election trickled down to
this election and gave Friedman a
harder path to victory than in
previous elections where there
was a bigger gap in the number of
votes, he said.
Theres no question the presidential race and candidate in my
party was used as a wedge, a
major wedge in this election, and
it did create a larger hill to
climb, Friedman explained.
However, people in Voorhees
know me, and they rejected a lot
of misinterpretations that were
being made involving our partys
presidential nominee and renewed their confidence in me,
which I couldnt be more thankful.
Negativity took over the campaign toward the end, with both
sides accusing the other of
wrongdoings.
We had to respond to their
negativity and calling him out for
fabricating Mikes record, Mcplease see FRIEDMAN, page 13

in our opinion

N.J. got the vote right!

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

We overwhelmingly said no to North Jersey casinos

n last weeks controversial General Election, one thing is certain:
New Jersey voters got it right
when they voted no on the ballot
question that would have allowed for
expanded gambling options in North
Jersey.
The referendum question asked voters whether they would approve of
amending the state constitution to
allow two casinos to be built at least 72
miles north of Atlantic City. Not only
did voters say no to that, they did so
at a historic rate.
As of last Wednesday morning, the
ballot question was voted down by
more than 1.5 million votes, according
to Associated Press projections. Thats
the largest margin of defeat for any
referendum in New Jerseys history.
The previous holder of that title was a

question that sought approval to build

a professional baseball stadium at the
Meadowlands complex; that vote
failed by only 500,000 votes.
The majority of the electorate cast
its votes along the line of what we
have been saying for awhile now: New
Jersey doesnt need more gambling; it
needs a refining and retuning of what
it already has in Atlantic City.
We dont need to look at other locations to place the same type of gambling and casino resorts. We need to
turn around the one location where it

Richard Donnelly

already exists.
Atlantic City can get back to the successful resort town it once was. Yes, it
will take hard work, dedication and
new, creative views. But it can be done.
Legalized sports betting could help
overnight, but thats a discussion for
another day.
In the meantime, Atlantic City officials need to get creative to attract
more visitors to the Jersey Shore
town, and build it up as a destination
for more than just gambling. The city
has focused on this for the last few
years, but it needs to do even more.
We applaud New Jersey voters who
said no to more of the same. This
needs to not be a North Jersey versus
South Jersey issue. It needs to be an
issue that our entire state tackles head
on, for the good of our state economy.

Voorhees Township committed to 'going green'

On Nov. 15 at the Annual New Jersey
State League of Municipalities Conference, along with representatives of our
Green Team, I was proud to accept the Silver Certification Award from Sustainable
Jersey. The silver certification is the highest level a municipality can attain, and
Voorhees was one of only 25 municipalities that reached this level in 2016.
To become Sustainable Jersey certified
at the silver level, Voorhees submitted documentation to show it had surpassed the
minimum requirement of 350 action
points by completing 41 sustainability actions and earning 385 points. In addition to
reaching 350 points, each silver level community had to create a green team and implement at least three of 11 priority actions. The township completed four of
these actions through a sustainable land
use pledge, a natural resource inventory, a
municipal fleet inventory and a prescrip-

tion drug safety

and disposal program.
Municipalities
must further prove
they have excelled
in areas such as improving energy efficiency and health
and wellness, reducing waste, sustaining
local
economies, protecting natural resources and adMichael
vancing the arts.
Mignogna
Collectively, the
440 participating MAYORS MESSAGE
Sustainable Jersey towns are a powerful force in New Jersey, and we are proud to be one of only 41
towns in the state to attain this highest

level.
Efforts to achieve silver level certification for the township were spearheaded by
our Sustainable Voorhees Green Team, a
subcommittee of the Voorhees Township
Environmental Commission. This volunteer group works as an extension of the
townships municipal government, focused
on sustainability planning, education and
the implementation of innovative projects
that positively impact the quality of lives
now and into the future.
The Voorhees Green Team members include Edward Hale (chairman, Environmental Commission), Judson Goldsborough, Valerie Brown, Lawrence Spellman,
Marianne Leone, Linda Cherkassky, Dmitry Cherkassky, Fredrik Khayati and Ronda

Though not the only factor, its absence usually makes teaching and

Everything Ive seen at the school

These qualities evidentially influenced one student I know well.
Several of her teachers effectively

Mobile kitchen promotes

food literacy
by Freeholder Bill Moen
Access to nutrition information and
proper food preparation is essential to
daily meal planning
in order to raise a
healthy family. The
Camden County Library System has an
innovative new tool
to assist Camden
County residents
called Books and Cooks.
The centerpiece of the program is
a mobile kitchen complemented by
a collection of books about nutrition, healthy eating and consumer
literacy with iPads and a mobile
hotspot available. The kitchen can
be transported to any of the librarys
eight branches and other locations to
demonstrate cooking techniques and
recipes.
The program recently visited the
Riletta Cream Branch Library on
Ferry Avenue in Camden with a presentation on Reading Labels and
Serving Size Surprise along with
offering guidance on how to select
natural foods like whole vegetables
and fruits versus packaged goods.
Advice was also given on how to
interpret nutrition labels on packaged
food focused on natural ingredients
without preservatives and additives.
Attendees were treated to a demonstration on how to make a Harvest
Wheat Berry Salad as an example of
a healthy, simple recipe most people
could make at home.
The Camden County Library System was awarded a $59,000 grant
from the New Jersey Department of
Labor and Workforce Development
to promote food literacy in Camden
City and other communities throughout the county.
The program helps residents at all
literacy levels gain skills in reading,
consumer math, converting recipes,
interpreting nutrition labels and understanding supermarket signage.
The program addresses the need

for food and nutrition

literacy in communities like Camden that
have been designated
as food deserts by
the US Department
of Agriculture. The
USDA defines a food
desert as a community
where residents have
limited ability to get
affordable, nutritious
food because they live far from a supermarket or large grocery store and
dont have easy access to transportation.
According to the USDA over 60
percent of the states food deserts are
located in South Jerseys six counties. Camden, with over 75,000 residents, saw its first new supermarket
in 40 years open in 2014, which is
still the only operating grocery store
in the city.
The lack of access to nutritious
food and limited literacy skills, such
as being unable to read food labels,
supermarket signage or understand
the cost of food relative to its nutritional value, are factors contributing
to diagnosed cases of high blood
pressure, high cholesterol or Type 2
Diabetes.
The Camden County Librarys
Books and Cooks mobile kitchen
will make this vital information
available and help to foster healthy
eating habits that will last a lifetime.
For more information, visit the
Camden County Librarys webpage
at www.camdencountylibrary.org.
There you can also find your local
branch of the Camden County Library System, along with a list of
member communities.
If you have any other questions
about County services, please call

VOORHEES TOWNSHIP
PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION RESULTS

Continued from page 4

Govern explained. We didnt like
the way that the race started to
get personal toward the end, but
were glad that Voorhees voted
the way it did.
I was very disappointed that
the campaign became so negative, Friedman said. I feel like
we ran a very clean campaign,
kept our heads up and stuck to
the issues because thats what
matters most to Voorhees residents.
They are smart, informed voters, and they have proven that
time and time again, and they rejected the negativity that came
out from the other side.
Fanelli said he didnt think the
negativity affected the outcome.
I think both sides did what
they felt they needed to do, he
said.
Im not really sure that played
into it because it was so close. Im
sure he gained and lost votes with
some of the things he said, and I
think I gained and lost votes with
some of the things I said. I almost
think its a wash.
Friedman said he will waste no
time

on
making
Voorhees an honest, balanced
government.
