Flowers for Algernon Part 1 Questions

(Due Tuesday November 8)

Directions: Please answer the following questions in FULL sentences.

Makes sure your answers are in a different color so that it is easy to


differentiate between the questions and answer. If a questions asks for
TEXTUAL EVIDENCE, please make sure you add a page #.

Review THIS PRESENTATION before you start reading. The story begins on
page 672, and part 1 ends on page 686. Part 1 is due on Tuesday November 8!

AFTER PROGRIS REPORT 3:


1. Why does Charlie say I never tell lies? What is he talking about?
Charlie says this because the man told him to make up stories about
the people in the ink. Charlie replied by saying, how can you tell stories
about people that you have never met? Why should I make up lies?
2. What does this say about his personality and intelligence?
This says something about Charlie's personality and intelligence,
because Charlie doesnt know that this is just an activity for him to do, and
these characters are probably not people in real life.
3. Who is Algernon?
Algernon is a white mouse. It is used in a box that is a maze and you
have to get it from one end to the next.

4. What were Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss arguing about?
They were arguing about using Charlie for the study. Dr. Nemur was a
little bit nervous at first to use him, but Dr. Strauss let him know that Miss
Kinnian had recommended him.
5. Charlie will be the first human being to ever have something happen to
him. What is it?
Charlie will be the first human to have his intelligence tripled by
surgical means.

6. Dr. Strauss tells Charlie not to worry about the operation. What is his
reasoning for this?
Dr. Strauss says this so that Charlie wont be scared for the operation
and itll be more successful for both Charlie and Dr. Strauss.
7. Dr. Strauss wants Charlie to concentrate on what in his journal entries?
Dr. Strauss wants Charlie to concentrate on his feelings and what he is
thinking.

8. What is Charlies opinion of Algernon now? Why does it change?
He is getting very frustrated now that the mouse keeps beating him at
everything. He strongly dislikes the mouse.

9. Charlie says Joe and Frank are friends and they like him. What are Joe and
Frank really doing to Charlie?
Joe and Frank in actuality are making fun of Charlie and they are
calling him names. Infact, whenever one of the other employees make a
mistake, they say Stop being such a Charlie Gordon!

10. What is a victory for Charlie?
A victory for Charlie is that he finally beat Algernon 9 times!

Text Evidence #1: I beat Algernon!... I got so exited I fell off the chair before I
finished. But after that I beat him 8 more times.

11. Why did Mrs. Kinnian run out of the room? What does this tell you about
how she feels about Charlie?
Mrs. Kinnian ran out of the room because she was to upset to even
think about Charlie believing his friends are nice. His friends are actually
really mean and just make fun of him, he just does not realize it. Its hard for
Mrs. Kinnian to just sit there and listen to that. This shows that she feels
Charlie is not able to see the bad in people yet and he cant tell when people
are being mean.
12. List 3 improvements in Charlies intelligence from the beginning until the
end of Part I.

tester told me.

13. What does it mean to pull a Charlie Gordon? How does Charlie react
when he realizes this?
To pull a Charlie Gordon is to do something stupid. His friends laugh,
but he doesnt get it so he laughs along with them.
Text Evidence #1: I ran out into the street and I threw up. Then I walked
home. Its a funny thing I never knew that Joe and Frank and the others liked
to have me around all the time to make fun of me. Now I know what it means
when they say to pull a Charlie Gordon. Im ashamed.

Charlie is growing more and more intelligent over the experiment and
does not feel it, and the scientists are fighting about whose work this really is.
2. How does Charlie view himself?
Charlie views himself as someone who is not very intelligent. He thinks
that he is still not very smart and he doesnt even realize just how much he
has learned from this whole operation.
Text Evidence: I dont feel intelligent. There are so many things I dont
understand.

3. How do OTHERS view Charlie?
Others are starting to view Charlie definitely as a more intelligent
person than he was before. They also notice that he has picked up so much
recently that would take normal people so much longer to learn.
Text Evidence: When talking to Charlie, Miss Kinnian states, Youve got to be
a little patient. Youre accomplishing in days and weeks what it takes normal
people to do in half a lifetime. Thats what makes it so amazing.

Charlie has gotten so smart, he is surpassing many other very smart
people, but this causes him to be driven away from the people he knows and
loves because they dont feel he is himself anymore.
2. How does Charlie view himself?
Charlie views himself as someone who now has started having troubles
communicating and socializing with others. He has started to become more
of a thinker now than someone who socializes.
Text Evidence: I find that I dont communicate with people much any more.
Thank G-d for books and music and things I can think about. I am alone at my
apartment at Mrs. Flynns boardinghouse most of the time and seldom speak
with anyone.

Others may be feeling a little bit uncomfortable and sorry around
Charlie.
Text Evidence: Dr. Nemur appears to be uncomfortable around me.
Sometimes when I try to talk to him, he just looks at me strangely and then
turns way.

Charlie sees many people like him and wants to help them be smart like
him but he sees Algernon acting up so he is doing research on this
experiment to see if it will happen to him to.
2. How does Charlie view himself?
Charlie currently views himself as someone that would be very helpful
in carrying out this whole study. He thinks that he would be very helpful to
help others understand and explain this operation, as someone who has been
on both sides. (the person with a low IQ, and then a genius)

have acquired. In a sense its the problem Ive been concerned with all my
life.

Many people view Charlie as someone who is very much becoming a
way smarter person. They think that he is working maybe a little bit too hard.
Text Evidence: Dr. Strauss thinks Im working too hard. Dr. Nemur says Im
trying to cram a lifetime of research and thought into a few weeks.

Charlie had gotten to the peak of his smartness and wrote what has
happened to Algernon and soon after Algernon died because his brain
decreased rapidly, and he soon knew it would happen to him and he too is
slowly forgetting everything; returning to his state of normalcy.
2. How does Charlie view himself?
Now Charlie knows that he is beginning to forget everything that he
has learned. He is trying to stop this from happening. He feels that he is
turning back into that person that he once was, who got made fun of and
teased all the time.
Text Evidence: Most of the books I have are too hard for me now. I get angry
with them because I know that i read and understood them just a few weeks
ago.

Others feel bad for Charlie that he is losing such good knowledge.

Charlie is forgetting things slowly, tries a job and reading but its hard
again, he decides to leave town and wants to be smart and try to learn again
and continue putting flowers on Algernon's grave.
2. How does Charlie view himself?
In the end, Charlie views himself once again as stupid. He starts to
question why he is now like this. He fears that it may be because he did not
try hard enough. He is determined to keep trying though and to hopefully
become smart once again.
Text Evidence: I dont know why Im dumb agen or what I did wrong maybe
its becaus I dint try hard enuff. But if I try and practis very hard maybe Ill get
a littl smarter and know what all the words are.

Others now feel very sorry for Charlie because he has become dumb
again and he has lost a lot of confidence.
Text Evidence: I dont want Miss Kinnian to feel sorry for me. Evry body feels
sorry at the factery and I dont want that eather so Im going someplace
where nobody knows that Charlie Gordon was once a genus and now he cant
even reed a book or rite good.
