Tutorial 1

1. A Newtonian body wash undergoes steady shear between two horizontal

parallel plates. The lower plate is fixed, and the upper plate of 1kg moves
with constant velocity of 20 m/s. The distance between the plates is
constant at 5 mm. The area of the upper plate in contact with the fluid is
0.5 m2. What is the viscosity of the product and the momentum diffusivity
is if its density is 1010 kg/m3?

2.

A piston of mass 1.0 kg of diameter 120 mm and length 220 mm slides in

a vertical cylinder of internal diameter 120.1 mm at a constant velocity , v.
The downwards motion is resisted by an oil film of viscosity 0.80 Pa s. Find
the velocity, u. Note any assumptions made.

3. A 10 cm diameter copper ball is to be heated from 100C to average

temperature of 150C in 30 min. Taking the average density and the
specific heat of cooper in this temperature range to be =8950kg/m3 and
CP =0.395 kJ/kg.C, respectively, determine
a) The total amount of heat transfer to the copper ball;
b) The average rate of transfer to the ball
c) The average flux

A Newtonian body wash undergoes steady shear between two horizontal

parallel plates. The lower plate is fixed, and the upper plate of 1kg moves
with constant velocity of 50 m/s. The distance between the plates is
constant at 5 mm. The area of the upper plate in contact with the fluid is
0.6 m2. What is the viscosity of the product and the momentum diffusivity
is if its density is 1010 kg/m3?

U
Moving with u=50m/s
5 mm
Fixed bottom plate
Combining the Newtons law of viscosity and the definition of shear stress we
have:

du
F
= yx = x
A
dy
Fdy=Ad ux
3

5 x 10 m

50m / s

dy =A

d ux

At constant velocity, F= mg
=

F( 5 x 103 m)
A (50 m/s) =

1 kg X 9.8 m/ s2 (5 x 103 m)
0.6 m2 X (50 m/s)

kg/m.s (Pa.s)

2. A piston of mass 1.0 kg of diameter 120 mm and length 220 mm slides in

a vertical cylinder of internal diameter 120.1 mm at a constant velocity ,
u. The downwards motion is resisted by an oil film of viscosity 0.80 Pa s.
Find the velocity, u. Note any assumptions made.

Identify that this is a shear stress problem and balance shear force against
weight of piston

Assumptions:
- no-slip condition, Newtonian fluid, (=Const)

Laminar flow in the gap and linear velocity profile

mg

Constant u mg = A = mg/A

du
u0
=0.8 X
=1600 uPa
dy
0.05 X 103

A=dL=

3.142 x(120 x10^-3)m X 220 (220x10^-3)= 0.083 m2

1600uA=mg u= (1kg X 9.8 m/s2)/ (1600 X0.083)= 0.073841 m/s

Remember A= Area of the wall of the cylinder as it is the part in contact with the
fluid
