BACK TITRATION K.C. GARBIN DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING, COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES, DILIMAN, QUEZON CITY, PHILIPPINES DATE PERFORMED: SEPTEMBER 27, 2016 INSTRUCTOR: KYLE BENITO 1. Discuss the precautions in preparation of KMnO4? Because KMnO4 has high oxidation number, it is extremely reactive to light. In order to prevent KMnO4 from reating with light, every glassware that will contain KMnO4 must be wrapped with aluminum foil or carbon paper to prevent the light from reaching KMnO4. This also includes the burette tht will be ued for the titration. 2. What is the significance of blank titration? In this experiment, KMnO4 was expected to only react with oxalate. It must not react with other chemicals mixed with oxalate in the analyte solution but the permanganate do react with other chemicals in the analyte solution. In order to remove this error, a solution with all the required chemicals except the analyte must be preapred. This will then be titrated with permanganate and the molarity of KMnO4 derived here will be subracted from the molarity of KMnO4 derived from the analyte solution and this will give the real molarity of KMnO4 3. Discuss the titration with self indicator and its advantages. A titration with self indicator means that an additional chemical that detects the change in solution
is not needed. The indicator in this
kind of titration will be provided by the chemicals involved in the reaction. Titration with self indicator is useful in titration of solutions that does not have acidity or basicity. It also reduces the error in the results because adding an external indicator will slightly change the concentration of the solution. 4. What is the importance of boiling KMnO4 solution if it is stored for future use AThe magnesium ions detach from EDTA and combine with EBT, producing a red color. After titration, the magnesim ions go back again to the EDTA creating a blue solution. 5. What is the purpose if heating the oxalate mixture to 70 80C before titrating it with KMnO4? It is useful in preservng food and also i preserving biological samples such as blood 6. Explain the rationale behind using H2SO4 to acidify the the analyte mixture instead of using HCl? A large formation constant was needed for the Ca and Mg ions to react with the EDTA. The lower the number of pH, the leser the formation constant becomes. The
pH must be >pH8 to have someReferences
