Introduction to Gmail and Google Docs

Objectives & Learning


Outcomes

In this lesson, students will:


Know how to open their Gmail account using their
password
Check their email and send an email
Open Google Docs and collaborate on a shared
document
Open Google Slides
Know the appropriate way to hold and handle a
chromebook
Know how to get properly get the chromebook from the
cart and plug it back in

Rationale

Students come into 5th grade having little to no experience on


using their Gmail account or the applications on Google Docs. In
this lesson, students will become familiar with how to use these
resources so that they will be equipped with the skills needed for
the following lessons.

shared google document with peers in their table group

Printed username and password for each student


Write the following prompt on the board: If you could
have any superpower, what would you choose, and
why?

Time of Lesson

1 hour and 10 minutes

Procedure

Intro (15 min):


1. Connect teacher macbook to elmo projector
2. Show students how to log-in and log-out of gmail
application
1. Emphasize the importance of using the correct
punctuation in username and password
2. Emphasize the importance of not sharing
password with others

b. Distribute passwords and usernames


c. Direct each student to glue password and username in
the front page of their planner
Go over chromebook procedure (10 min)
1. Students will practice properly unplugging chromebooks
from the cart and walking them to their seat
Practice Logging in (5 min):
1. Students get chromebooks
2. Have students practice logging in
3. Direct students to practice successfully logging in and out
three times
4. Students may be helpers for other students when they
successfully log in
Demonstrate and practice sending an email (10 min)
1. Demonstrate how to send an email using the Elmo
projector
2. Have students practice sending an email to you
Demonstrate and practice creating and collaborating on a google
doc (15 min)
1. Demonstrate how to open a google doc and share it with
another user
2. Direct students to create a google doc and share it with
each peer at their table group
3. Have each team member respond to the following
prompt: If you could have any superpower, what would
you choose, and why?
4. Direct students to each write in a different colored font
5. Students must share google document with their teacher
Put away chromebooks (10 min)
1. Students put away chromebooks table by table
2. Chromebook cart checker makes sure that everyone has
plugged them in as they put them away
Reflection & Questions (10 min)
1. Talk about the experience of collaborating digitally
1. What happened that was positive?
2. Did anything happen that was negative or
potentially could create a negative experience for
a student?
3. What rules should we agree to as a class?

Show students how to change the language setting on


the Gmail application

Make sure important aspects of sharing are addressed in


closing reflection (referring to students handbook and
school-wide internet expectation taught previously)

o Import a link into the Google doc

o Be paired up with a helper at their table

Assessment

Formative Assessment
Check for understanding during class by walking around,
making observations, and assisting students where
needed
Check for understanding of the process by checking to
see if each student successfully shared document to
teacher email
