Taking IELTS A Personal Experience

Assalam o Alaikum, Brothers I want to share my personal experience about taking ILETS
exam. Many people, like I did, are scared of taking IELTS because it is quite expensive. But
on the other hand it isnt that tough as we think like the British Council slogan says
It is easier than you think
So I want to share some tips regarding taking the Test and its prep. If you have studied in a
university than you can easily score 6.5 minimum. People usually register IELTS two or three
weeks before. This time is sufficient to saddle up for IELTS because now you have to learn
how to attempt the test not to improve your English (however during these days speak in
English with your friends this will make your speaking fluent). I will share some tips about
each part as per my personal experience below

Speaking
This part consists of two parts. In first part the examiner will ask you to introduce yourself
and may ask one or two three questions about your profession or area of study. And then
ask you to talk about a general topic e.g. a restaurant you ever visited. Then in the end the
examiner will ask very general questions about the topic. Take care of following things

Dont try to impress the examiner by mimicking a foreigners way of talking, because
doing so your attention may be diverted. There is as such no restriction of
pronunciation, as far as your words are understandable they are good.
Take pauses, think and then speak. And try not to be too brief in your answers,
explain them a little bit. Like if you are form Lahore and he asks where are you
from? Explain a line or two about Lahore.
He will give you a card in which a topic is mentioned on which you have to speak
about 2 min. He will give you a minute to prepare. Just write a few bullets points and
dont try to write paragraphs as time is too short. Just speak moderately slowly. Take
pause, think and then speak.

Listening
This section has four parts and expands about 40 min. You are given a question booklet and
an answer sheet. Four tape scripts are played and before playing you have some time to
look at the answers. As this part proceeds, time to look at questions decreases
subsequently. So you have to look at questions quickly. Then the tapes are played. Stay
focus is the key in this test. If you have missed some information, dont panic and leave it.
Now divert your focus quickly to the next question.
And in the end you have 10 min to transfer your answers to answer sheet. During the tapes
are played just write answers on question booklet.

Reading
This section is also divided into 3 parts and you have 60 min for it. Each part is a passage and
at the end there are questions related to it. So key is dont read the whole passage at once.
Read 1st paragraph completely and then read the first line of each paragraph which is a topic
sentence then go to questions. In questions some information is required, and as you have
read the topic sentence, you will guess that in which paragraph this info will be available.
This will save your time

Writing
Writing consists of two tasks and you have an hour for it. In task one a diagram, chart, graph
etc. is given and you have to describe it or present the info in it in your own words. Tips are
that always brainstorm before writing. Dont repeat the words, use synonyms instead.

Task 1 Example

Start writing with the problem statement and paraphrase it, dont copy it as it is. The
statement in the above picture can be paraphrased as

The above bar charts represents total time spent on different type of telephone calls by the
residents of Finland
As it is a comparison the word increase / decrease will be used. But dont repeat them and
think of the synonyms. Like increase then use elevates, expands, grow, become greater etc.
Spend 20 min on it and write 150 or more words.
In task 2 spend 40 min because you have to write 250 words in it and it carries more marks.
You have to write about a topic. Key is brainstorm before writing and one of my English
teacher once told me to write in English you must think in English.
Begin with a brief intro of 4-5 lines. Start each paragraph with a topic sentence and always
add a concluding one in the end. In the end of your writing (in both task 1 and task 2) always
conclude with a selection of fine words.
Remember

Write cleanly
Use lead pencil
Be organized and dont go off the topic
Be careful about spelling
