1.1 Integration of Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to explain the purpose and location of a Table of Contents, a
Glossary, and an Index.
Students will be able to apply their knowledge of Table of Contents, Glossary, and Index
in order to complete the scavenger hunt worksheet to the book A Healthy Earth
1.2 Standards

CC.1.2.2.E Use various text features and search tools to locate key facts or information
in a text efficiently.

1.3 Anticipatory Set

You all have been learning a lot about informational text the past week with Ms. Mathias.
I know you have learned a lot about the parts that make up an informational text
including the Table of Contents, Glossary, and Index. Have you all been on a scavenger
hunt before? A scavenger hunt is when you are provided clues and you have to think
really hard, and search to find the answer. Today, I created a scavenger hunt for the new
book we will be reading, A Healthy Earth. You will be working together in groups of 2
and 3 to search through our new book, and find the answers to the questions in the
scavenger hunt! In order to complete this work sheet, youre all going to have to work
together!
1.4 Procedures (This part must be thoroughly and thoughtfully written with TEACHER
TALK).
I am first going to ask them if they know what the table of contents, glossary, and index
are without looking in their book. If they seem to know them well, I will not review them.
If I feel they need a review before completing the worksheet, I will review what they are
beforehand.
I have handed you all your very own copy of A Healthy Earth and your scavenger hunt
worksheet. I will allow you to pick your own groups for this assignment, but I want you to
use your indoor voices and to be working hard. I will be coming to both groups to help
with any questions you may have. Make sure to read the directions and get started!
I will be going to each group, answering questions and helping when needed.
Now that you have completed the worksheet, lets go over what you found as a whole
group.
If we have time: I see a lot of you predicted that this book is going to be about pollution
and how we can make the Earth a healthier place. Before we even read the book, do any
of you know information on this topic already?

1.4 Differentiation
For my student who seems to be more advanced than the rest of the group, I will have
him make up his own definition for Glossary, Index, and Table of Contents.
To include my two students that lack participation, I will have each student share at least
one of their answers on the worksheet.
1.5 Closure

Now that we have completed the scavenger hunt, does anyone have anything they
would like to share about the activity? Did you enjoy it? Was it difficult? I also
want you to think about how much you learned from our new book today without
even reading it. You were able to make a prediction about what the book is going
to be about without even reading the first sentence!
1.6 Formative and Summative Assessment
Formal: I will assess their knowledge of Table of Contents, Glossary, and Index
by asking them to share what they know about each before the activity.
Formal: I will assess their ability to apply this knowledge to A Healthy Earth by
the scavenger hunt worksheet.

2.0 Reflection on Planning (Complete BEFORE you teach)
I am very excited about this lesson! I think my students are really going to enjoy it
and it is a great way to apply the skills they have already learned about informational
text! I started incorporating scavenger hunts into my lessons after EGP 335 last year. I
made an online scavenger hunt and thought it was an activity that I would have loved
as a student. My only fear is that allowing my students to work in groups will distract
them from staying on task. However, if this happens I will simply make them work
individually.
