THE JOHARI WINDOW

Johari Window is used as a model to solicit and give feedback. One of the most important
concepts in training is process of giving and receiving feedback. We can see ourselves as others
see us and people also learn how we see them through feedback. Feedback can be delivered
either by verbal or nonverbal communication. It gives information to a person or to a group. The
information will tell others how their behavior affects you, how you feel, and what you perceive.
Feedback is also a reaction by others, usually in terms of their feelings and perceptions, telling
you how your behavior affects them.

The Johari Window illustrates the process of giving and receiving feedback. Psychologists
Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham developed this window for their group process program. The
model above used as a communication window through which you give and receive information

about yourself and others. There are four panes in terms of columns and rows. The two columns
represent the self; the two rows represent the group. Column one contains "things that I know
about myself;" column two contains "things that I do not know about myself." The information
in these rows and columns moves from one pane to another as the level of mutual trust and the
exchange of feedback varies in the group. As a consequence of this movement, the size and
shape of the panes within the window will vary.
A) BEFORE THE PREVENT
The first pane, the "Arena," contains things that I know about myself and about which the group
knows.
Prevent is an annual program held by Acreda.
All the Spada Kohort 6 members including me will organize this program next year

The second pane, the "Blind Spot," contains information that I do not know about myself but of
which the group may know.

I dont know what prevent is all about

I dont know the target group of this program
I dont know what Masac is?
I dont know some of the founders of the rehabilitation centers are ex-drug addicts.

Pane three, the "Facade" or "Hidden Area," contains information that I know about myself but
the group does not know.
I know the speaker as the name and his or her background is introduced by the moderator,
but he or she didnt know me.

The fourth and last pane, the "Unknown," contains things that neither I nor the group knows
about me.
I dont know when this drugs issues will end, but I will support this kind of program to
all out against drugs.
I may never become aware of material buried far below the surface in my unconscious
area.
B) DURING THE PREVENT
The first pane, the "Arena," contains things that I know about myself and about which the group
knows.

This is the 6th prevent organized by Acreda and this time the co organizer is PDRM.
In prevent we have presentation session, dialogue session and parallel session.
There are also exhibition from AADK and Jabatan Penjara.
Datuk Yunus Pathi is the President of Masac instead of President Pengasih.
Masac is actually the combination of others 19 NGOs dealing with drug rehabilitations

excluding Pengasih.
The target group of this prevent are the school counselors, Spada student, AADK, NGO
dealing with drugs, PDRM, Jabatan Penjara, JKM, and Kementerian Pembangunan
Wanita dan Keluarga.
A few founders of NGO such Pengasih and Rumah Hijrah are ex-drug addicts.

The second pane, the "Blind Spot," contains information that I do not know about myself but of
which the group may know.
I dont know how the parallel session is.

 I dont know how I can get information from other parallel session as the session are
done in different hall
I dont know what is the role of rapporteur and time keeper

Pane three, the "Facade" or "Hidden Area," contains information that I know about myself but
the group does not know.
I know how do I feel when I need to be the master of ceremony for plenary session as this
is my experience and I need to converse in English even though all my friends gave
compliment and courage.
I know how hard to handle this big event thought our senior gave us chances to be their
committee members.
The fourth and last pane, the "Unknown," contains things that neither I nor the group knows
about me.
During the session I dont know when this drugs issues will end, but I will support this
kind of program to all out against drugs.
I am not sure either this kind of activity suitable for prevent
Why the hall is not full with audience.

C) AFTER THE PREVENT

We can change the tradition from doing this prevent in well set up hall, but manage it in
crowd such at a shopping complex.
We need to involve more participant as to increase the awareness of public.
We need to apply the blue ocean in our planned program as one the motto is less cost,
more impact.
We need me people like Datuk Yunus Pathi as he is the role model for the drug addict to
repent and start a successful life.
We can apply various strategies and technique in counseling session including sand
therapy for adult client.
We can see the different approach applied by different NGO in rehabilitation drug
addiction, but their intention are the same.
I know how the parallel session is.
I know I can get information from other parallel session even thought the session are
conducted in different hall as the organizer prepare the hard copy for all participant.
I know what is the role of a rapporteur and time keeper in a parallel session as I had the
experience to be the time keeper and observed my friend became the rapporteur.
I know to be a good Master of ceremony, I need to practice more.

 I had a talent to be a good Master of ceremony as I have no problem with pronunciation

and the script is prepared by the organizer.

the group does not know.
I know that I really interested in sand therapy and I want to further my study in this field
to enhance my knowledge and skill in counseling.
I dreamed to have an enterprise to hire the ex-drug addicts as one of the aftercare
program and to help them from relapse.
The fourth and last pane, the "Unknown," contains things that neither I nor the group knows
about me.
I dont know when this drugs issues will end, but I will support this kind of program to
all out against drugs.
I also did not know how effective our next prevent as it is not done yet.
