INTRODUCTION
Smart School is a Malaysian education system which learning institution that reconstruct
systematically teaching-learning and school management in order to prepared children for
Information Age. Smart School had become one of the seven flagship of the Multimedia
Super Corridor (MSC) that will carry out in 2000. Early in 1996, the Ministry of Education
was created laws of Smart School concept. There was teaching and learning based on creative
thinking.

Technology as a important component in Smart School concept when Smart School project
exist as one of application that are part of Malaysian Multimedia Super Corridor
(MSC).Learning institution of Smart School was created systemically reinvented in term of
teaching and learning practice and school management in order to prepare student for
Information Age. In the Information Age, a Smart School will evolve over time continuously
developing its professional staff, education resources and its administrative capabilities to
adapt to changing condition, while continuing to prepare student life.
Teaching and learning process were included the process of curriculum, pedagogy,
assessment and teaching-learning materials in a mutually reinforcing, coherent manner. The
curriculum process will help student achieve overall balanced development and integrate
knowledge, skills, values, and correct use of language. Then, Smart School pedagogy will
seek to make learning more interesting, motivating, stimulating and meaningful. It is also
involve the children mind, spirit and bodies in the learning process.
The Smart School management will need strong, professional administrators and teachers
who can articulate school goals clearly, lead teaching at the school, and elicit strong parental
and community support to fulfill its objective. Finally, Smart School is important in
Malaysian education system in line with and in support of the nation drive to fulfil Vision
2020. At the same time, the individuals who are intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and
physically balanced and harmonious can be well produce.

OBJECTIVES :

There are five important objectives in Smart School which are :

1. Development of individual (intellectual, physical, emotional, and spiritual),
2. Create an opportunities to enhance individual strengths and abilities,
3. Produce a thinking and technology literate workforce.
3

4. Democratizing education,
5. Increasing involvement of stakeholders,

One of the goals is to provide all-round development of the individual like intellectual,
physical, emotional and spiritual. Intellectual or cognitive is focus on acquiring knowledge. It
is also focus on searching, generating, and using knowledge with an emphasis on problemsolving and creativity. Then, about the physical it still social responsibility and consciousness
of health and environmental issues. In that cases, it will causes emphasize a global orientation
and inculcate work place skills and attitudes. Emotional and spiritual are one of the sub point
for the goals of smart school that instil moral and religious values and causes emphasize
adaptability, team-player characteristics, emotional balance and emotional intelligence.

Through another goals are to provide opportunities to enhance individual strengths and
abilities. The strategies of this goal, are to provide elective in the curriculum and allow for
vertical integration. The vertical integration means that grade levels students for all subject in
the school curriculum. Curriculum design for smart schools will incorporate element of
vertical integration that to allow high fliers to surf through their schooling years, without
being kept apart from their peers in virtual express classes.

Therefore, another goals are to produce a thinking and technology-literate workforce and the
strategies are teach thinking across the curriculum and apply technology in teaching and
learning. In the smart school, the use of technology like internet as a teaching-learning
material is the best way to produce children who are have different learning style than another
school.

The forth goals of the Smart School Project is democratize education. The last goals of the
Smart School Project is increase the participation of stakeholders. This goals involve a few
strategies that can be done to fulfil the goal which is to create awareness of what happens in
schools. All the stakeholders must know their responsibilities and give feedback so that the
4

Smart School project can be knows whether it is working or not. The participation of the five
group of stakeholders such as school stakeholders, community stakeholders, (Ministry of
education) MoE stakeholders, state stakeholders, and industry stakeholders will allowing the
exchange of experiences and ideas for smart school project.

CHALLENGES OF SMART SCHOOL

There must be a problems and challenges for a school need to be faced since the inception of
Smart Schools in this country. Some policy changes must be applied to enable the smooth
transition to Smart School. As implementations of smart school, there would be huge
provision or budget to overcome the increasing of number of Smart School. This has
significant implications particularly on multimedia infrastructure deployment, training,
learners and materials development.
The smart school itself have to face the challenges in implementation of smart school. Most
of the smart school were lack of facilities. The computer labs not in adequate number. There
are also hardware problems related to LANs, PCs and servers. Furthermore, the breakdown of
electricity supply also one of the challenges. This is due to inability of the existing system in
school to cope with the increase usage of electricity.

Thus, the authorities should play their roles in improving the management of smart school.
Moreover, the smart school software was not compatible with the national textbook. Thus, the
school has to upgrade the software in line with national text book. Each school need to have a
system integration engineer who has a broad range of skills including software and hardware
engineering and interface protocols. As the teachers are using technology equipment and the
infrastructure intensively during teaching process, there must be a problem when the
computers or equipment are damage or unable to use.

This problem may cause teaching process disturbed. Thus, this problem must be solved
quickly to ensure teaching and learning process progress smoothly. The best solution is
always keep in maintenance. The teachers have an important role which is educate their
students to master in using ICT. But the efforts in attract students and fostering their interest
to ICT is one of the smart school teachers challenges.

Next, one of the challenges in aspect of learners are theirs attitude. Nowadays, the students
are not too active or passive in teaching and learning process. They just listen to teachers and
doing nothing unless hoping fully to the teachers. Although teacher hold the responsibility of
teaching process and in relation to technology applications, the student should also play an
active role in determining the direction of their respective learning by virtue of the
participation and activities. The software that are created and designed to facilitate the
students active, creative and critical engagement with the content which can help enhance
the active construction and reconstruction of ideas and experiences of their understanding of
the content presented.

Smart Schools will prepare the students to make a successful transition to the modern and
more global environment. The schools will nurture skills of creative problem-solving in the
face of real situations, and the students will learn to make a right decisions and holding the
responsibility for them. Besides that, students also learn how to process and manipulate
information. They will trained to think creatively and critically and to reflect on what they

have learned, as well as to transfer and apply knowledge from one disciplines to another and
also to daily life.

Hence, students will need to be taught strategies to competently and selectively navigate for
information.

Moreover, team effort, group collaboration, flexibility and competency in

international languages will be emphasized. In Malaysia, the Smart Schools will also
incorporate the innovative concept of the virtual express class. The current system stretches
the weak students and restricts the smartest. The technology in the Smart Schools will help
provide the flexibility to remove this stress in that system. This will allow fast learners to
complete the coursework and assessments sooner than the normal duration.

Besides, most of parents do not concern about this project due to busy with their work so that
they can upgrade their life and provide the better environment for their children. They think
that the Smart School education project is the responsible of government teachers only. They
do not care about it without thinking for their children sake. Most of the people feel that
Smart School is same with normal school. They do not know much about Smart School. They
think that Smart School for smart student only. They do not have any proper disclosure of
Smart School. So, they have misunderstood about this matter. One of initiatives that
government needs to do is organizing a carnival that promote Smart School programs to
dismiss the misconceptions about Smart School.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SMART SCHOOL

There are many advantages of a smart school. Firstly, it can improves the academic
performance. It is often seen that the students studying in a smart class get a better result than
the students studying in a regular class. This is because the understanding ability in the
students studying in a smart school is way more than others students. The uses of technology
in the classroom for teaching increase the understanding of the students. The topics can be
more clearly.
Besides that, the advantages of smart school also can makes learning more enjoyable for
students. If we go and look in a regular classroom, the students are feeling sleepy. Some
students are not listening to the teacher and mostly they are busy talking with their friends. In
short, the class become boring for them. But if we uses smart school in classroom can make
students become interesting and enjoyable to learn process in the class.
There are also disadvantages for smart school. One of the disadvantages involved the
expensive cost. Even the schools which can afford it get over the budget after buying it. Some
schools often take loan to buy the smart technology. So, the impact for school are increased to
meet the cost of the equipment. The admission fees of the schools with smart classrooms also
hikes. All parents cannot afford such expensive education for their children, every children
cannot access to the smart classrooms.
Besides that, the disadvantages can effect to maintenance. Like all electronic gadgets, the
gadget used in the smart school require proper maintenance. The rooms in which these
gadgets are installed should be free from dust participles and should not face direct sunlight
otherwise the gadgets will become faulty. Also the equipment release a lot of heat in the
surrounding so the rooms should be air conditioned. Technical staff has to be appointed for
8

the maintenance of devices. This further adds to the cost. The devices also need to be updated
regularly which is a very time consuming process.

CONCLUSION
The smart school students should ensure all taught that given by the teachers is a useful
knowledge. They need to give efforts to master at all. For the sake of realize that, the smart
school students should ready and understand what teachers have taught. They must always
practice and do revision continuously in order to become expert in ICT.
The Smart School initiative can revolution is e learning in ways that are beyond our grasp
today. Ensuring the successful implementation of the nationwide expansion of the Smart
School will require certain move such as a long-term implementation plan for the period
2005-2020 will set performance targets that will have to be met by the major players. The
plan would have to get the approval and fully backing of the government in terms of its
commitments to the goals of the Smart Schools

Due to the change of the era of information and technology, Malaysian Educational
institutions also had changed. It can be proven by the existence of the Multimedia Super
Corridor and the smart school project by the Ministry of Education. Multimedia Development
Corporation (MDeC) is the organization that were chosen by the government to develop the
ICT in Smart School project.
