That's how designer and photo list Donna Talley explains the series of small she made wo her Saratoge, New York, home period of wo years. She wanted alargerstove, there was a pass-through window between the in and dining room that needed to be closed ‘up in order to accommodate the ventilation for the larger appliance. Donna could have simply covered over the opening and moved on, but that would have left a boring blank susfice. Instead, she had her contractor drywall only the kitchen side, leaving a recessed box in the dining room. Then, for just $300, she framed the new nook with decorative molding and added a pair of adjustable shelves to accommodate her collection of ironstone. ‘The shelf project, says Donna, taught her a valuable lesson about working with contractors: Ie’ easier to get them to tackle a small job—tike finishing out the nook—while they'reworking on something bigger. “If I had asked just for the niche, I'd have either paid an exorbitant price or Td still be waiting,” she says. The result, says Donna, is that she doesn't feel removed from her guests when she entertains them with a song after dinner. “I can see them and they can see me,” she says, Next on the lst: Getting a 140-year-old living room fireplace up and running again with a gas insert. To do so, Donna's contractor had to first widen and deepen the firebox by removing the mantel and a row of brickon each side of the firebox. He then added depth with a layer of old brick installed on the face of the box and crafted anew mantel that mimicked the old.’The same reclaimed brick was also used to create a hearth ‘The final change Donna made was to a 72-square-foot room on the second floor. “When I bought the house the room was used as a mursery, and a erib was about the only bed you could fi in i” she says.
