Schlegal Villages Retirement Residence, Etobicoke ON
While working at Schlegal Villages I was apart of the Program for Active Living (PAL). Within this program I got to facilitate group strength classes, one on one assisted walking programs, pre and post fitness testing and individual exercise program plans. I worked alongside the Registered Kinesiologist to learn the skills needed to successfully implement these programs. She taught me specific procedures, fitness assessment measures and documentation used in a clinical setting. I also got the opportunity to completely plan and teach a few seminar sessions on falls prevention with the residents. I gained valuable knowledge of the geriatric community and the resident specific difficulties and needs, as well as how to manage time both with residents and the documentation of their individual sessions. Vaughn Community Health Centre, Vaughn ON My placement at Vaughn Community Health Centre changed from the original route. I was originally supposed to be shadowing a Registered Kinesiologist working with patients living with a wide variety of chronic diseases. The clinic was in the process of changing their target and shifted to Pulmonary Rehabilitation as its focus. This meant I would be working with the Respiratory Therapist in the development of a pulmonary rehabilitation program. This allowed me to learn a lot of new knowledge with regards to COPD. I got a lot of exposure to spirometry testing. This included calibration of spirometer and computer analyzing software, and practice with skills needed to teach and facilitate the actual test. Vaughn Community Health Centre being a wide spread of practitioners in one central clinic gave me a lot of exposure to health related fields. I had the opportunity to sit in on one on one sessions with the Occupational Therapist from the Arthritis society, the Physiotherapist and smoking cessation/ spirometry sessions with the Respiratory Therapist. Overall, this placement gave me great exposure to a wide variety to clinical procedures and patients needs and gave me practice in my ability to adapt. Humber College Student Athletic Association, Toronto ON Working part time on campus gave me great work experience. I worked with the student athletic association (SAA) for three of my four-year undergrad and had the opportunity to move up into a presidency position. Being apart of this field was great experience with customer satisfaction and working as part of a team. A few of my main roles included interviewing, hiring, training and managing new and old staff. Being a staff of 25 total, I gained experience with scheduling and planning tasks for each employee at each shift. SAA runs a free fan incentive program so I was in charge of budgeting and purchasing promotional giveaway products as well as initiating new ideas to gain maximal fan interest and interaction at Humber Colleges varsity home games.
