Lesson plan: colander fine motor
Social development
The children may experience social development in many ways. During this activity, they
may be experiencing collaborative play by working side by side, to fit objects into the holes
of colander. The children may problem solve when there is not enough of one object and
another child wants that object. Children may also experience imaginary play such as a
noodle going through the colander, when it is a pipe cleaner or a rope. The children may
experience different viewpoints of the colander and problem solve on what side they want
the colander to lay on.
Emotional development
The children may experience emotional development in different ways. The children may
feel positive self-worth by being able to master the tools by fitting the objects into the hole.
The children also may experience choices and plan what objects they are wanting to fit
inside their colander. The children may be able to enjoy themselves in this project.
Physical Development
Large motor activity
Fine motor activity
This activity may support fine motor in many ways. The children may experience fine motor
by using their fingers to put the objects into the hole. The children also may experience eye
to hand, by seeing where they want to put the object and put them into that hole with their
hand. The children may experience impulse control by not taking all the objects for
themselves, instead letting all children use the materials.
Intellectual development
Social knowledge
The children may experience social knowledge in this activity. The children may be exposed
to the different names of the objects that they are using such as pipe cleaners, and strings.
Physical knowledge
The children may experience physical knowledge in this activity. The children may be able to
discriminate between physical properties such as what objects fit in the holes and what
dont. They may experience comparing and classifying, such as this feather is white and this
one is yellow, and then making piles of them.
Logical/mathematical knowledge
Number concepts
The children may experience number concepts in this activity. The children may count the
number of objects that they have in their colander. The children may experience one to one
correspondence by putting one object into one hole of the colander.
Classification
The children may experience classification in this activity. The children may sort through the
objects by physical traits such as all the yellow objects and all the white objects can go into
their colander.
Seriation
The children may experience Seriation in this activity. The children may sort out the objects
from big to small, or small to big such as the feathers and the flowers.
Conservation
The children may experience conservation in this activity, If the children bend the pipe
cleaner and then say that the quality remains the same, even though the pipe cleaner is in a
different shape.
Spatial/temporal knowledge
Spatial relationships
The children may experience Spatial relationships during this activity. The children may fit
the pieces into the holes and the. Take them apart. They may also experience this by
shaping the objects differently such as bending the pipe cleaner and the flowers.

Temporal relationships
Representation
The children may experience representation during this activity. The children may see the
feathers and start making bird noises. The children may role play such as they are chefs
cooking with the colander.
