ASME VIII
The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII is an accepted code used
in the USA and many other parts of the world. It provides a thorough and basic r
eference for the design of pressure vessels and heat exchangers covering design,

material selection, fabrication, inspection, and testing. Being a comprehensive

code, ASME VIII is complicated and until you become familiar with its structure
and principles, can be difficult to follow. Table 4.6 gives an outline summary.
Figure 4.3 shows a quick reference guide to the major technical aspects of an A
SME VIII vessel.

of the Authorized Inspector (AI).

2 Vessel design

ASME VIII is divided into the Divisions 1 and 2. Division 1 (VIII-1) covers norm
al vessels. Division 2 (VIII-2) covers alternative rules for pressure vessels an
d is used for various types of special applications, including nuclear. Although
VIII-2 was recently formally withdrawn, it is still used by many manufacturers.
Both are structured into a large number of paragraphs designated by reference l
etters, e.g. UG-22.
ASME VIII is written against a well-defined, theoretical background which is sim
ilar, but not identical, to that used for other pressure vessel codes. This theo
retical background is reflected in the design rules that apply to all the compon
ents of pressure vessels and the way in which size, shape, and material choices
are made. Many design rules in VIII-1 and VIII-2 are similar and the important o
nes are summarized in the Appendices of the codes as:
Mandatory appendices - These are design rules that have been well substantiated
over time.
Non-mandatory appendices - These are in a 'trial period' waiting to be transferr
ed to the mandatory appendices once their safety and practicality in use have be

en validated.
The content of ASME Section VIII is organized to cover the following main design
topics:
allowable stresses and joint efficiencies;
cylindrical shells under internal and external load;
flat plates, covers, and flanges;
vessel openings;
heat exchangers.

Mandatory appendices - These are design rules that have been well substantiated
over time.
Non-mandatory appendices - These are in a 'trial period' waiting to be transferr
ed to the mandatory appendices once their safety and practicality in use have be

topics:
allowable stresses and joint efficiencies;

PS, PQR, and welder qualifications are required. Test plates are required under
the conditions set out in UG-84. UW-11 gives priority to RT techniques. UT is pe

The content of ASME Section VIII is organized to cover the following main design
topics:
allowable stresses and joint efficiencies;
cylindrical shells under internal and external load;
flat plates, covers, and flanges;
vessel openings;
heat exchangers.
The purpose of this guide is to illustrate some of
onstruction which are provided under section VIII,
