Capturing Inclusion
Monday, November 14th, 2016

Can you capture Inclusion?

Learning Goals:
Communicate and represent our thinking by identifying and justifying the main idea of a photo
and accept multiple perspectives of others.

Success Criteria:
We demonstrate respect by listening attentively, talking in turn and respecting the
ideas and opinions of others.
We can clearly communicate our thinking by justifying our ideas while
participating in group conversations.
We can purposefully choose elements to create a photo that represents a main
idea (Inclusion).

Minds On:
See-Think-Wonder
Present the picture (see below) and give students a few minutes to jot down
anything that comes to mind.
In small groups have students talk about what they
a) See: Circulate to 1 or 2 groups and help students clarify their thoughts. For example,
you might ask them to explain or justify their thoughts.
b) Think: After a few minutes ask students what they think. You might circulate to a
different group or two to probe student thinking: why? What does that remind you of?

c) Wonder: After a few minutes ask students what they wonder. Again circulate to
another group and help students extend their inquiry. For example, how might things be
different if something in the photo was different (ie. the location, the people, the
time/year)?

Action Phase:
Task 1 ~ Class Discussion
Have small groups identify the main idea of the photo and provide
justification for their answer based on what they see in the picture.
As a class, discuss how might inclusion look for those that are often
marginalized.
Or What does (would) inclusion look like for those who are (or have
been) marginalized?
What does, being marginalized mean?
What are some reasons that people are or might feel marginalized?

- Faith/Spirituality
- Marital Status
- The way we look
- Economic Status

Task 2 ~ Class definition

In small groups, have the students complete a Frayer model to
demonstrate their understanding of the word - inclusion and what it means
(what it would look like in their classroom).

Task 3 ~ Photo
Take a photo on your device that captures what inclusion should look
like. Ideally (but not necessary) your class definition could be written on the
image as a quote. Max 4 images per class.

Suggested Extension: Encourage your students to share their

images on Instagram, Snapchat or Twitter with #EMSincludes
as a hashtag

Please email pictures to Mr. Brand p0033393@pdsb.net and include

your class # in the subject

Consolidation:
Look at the photos as a class and ask students to explain (justify) why each
photo is a good representation of inclusion.
