Our goal is to give people with physical disabilities maximum mobility, independence and normality. User functionality is therefore the most important criterion for measuring
our products.
(Prof. H. G. Nder, Chairman and CEO)
For over 85 years, the name Otto Bock has stood for technology, innovation, quality and customer
service. With a pioneering spirit, courage and decisiveness, the prosthetist and orthotist Otto Bock
established Otto Bock Orthopdische Industrie GmbH in Berlin in 1919. He had the courage to
break new ground and set higher standards which would revolutionize an entire industry. Under
the leadership of Dr. Max Nder, Otto Bock became a company of international standing. Thanks
to his creativity and inventive talent, Max Nder continued to set standards in orthopedic technology with products such as the modular leg prosthesis system and the myoelectric arm prosthesis.
The company began to establish an international sales structure in 1958, when the first foreign
subsidiary was founded. After years of consistent and dynamic expansion, today Otto Bock is a
true global player and a strong corporate brand. Around the world, our name stands for high-quality, high-performance and technologically outstanding products and services in orthopedic and
rehabilitation technology. But for all of our groundbreaking work, people have always been our
highest priority. We are committed to helping everyone achieve maximum mobility, independence
and normality.
Otto Bock HealthCare is a modern, customer- and success-oriented company with a long-standing tradition a global player with local roots. With 37 sales and service subsidiaries and export
activities in over 140 countries across the globe, we are able to maintain close, consitent contact
with our customers. Thanks to this intimate relationship with the market, we understand user
needs and customer requirements and integrate them into the products we develop. Although we
have created a future-proof organization with our global network of development, manufacturing
and production sites we remain committed to the German market and our local roots. Duderstadt,
located in Germanys Eichsfeld region, is not only where our largest development and production
sites are situated, it is also home to the Otto Bock HealthCare headquarters.
In the future, we will continue to use our experience and expertise in our commitment to improving the quality of life of disabled people by providing functionally and technologically outstanding
solutions: Quality for life made by Otto Bock.
To make ordering Otto Bock products as easy as possible, our Materials for Orthopedic
Technology catalog also contains useful instructions on the ordering process as well as
ordering examples and order forms.
Thermoplastics are finding increasing use in the production of orthopedic aids, and an ever
wider range of processing methods is being employed as the quality of plastics increases.
For this reason, this catalog contains a technical information section which gives a comprehensive overview of Otto Bocks entire range of plastic sheets and provides details on
heating these materials in modern ovens.
In addition to well-known, tried and tested materials, Otto Bock has introduced new, innovative products. These include PU Resin Kit Polytol, Thermoplastics with antibacterial effectiveness as well as Water Transfer Printing and ThermoLyn PETG (Copolyester).
These products are presented before the list of key words in a highlights section which includes page numbers for each product.
This catalog contains a wide variety of materials with which you can ensure high-quality
fittings. For easier access to content, we have organized the catalog into 16 sections according to technical criteria. The table of contents (page 1) allows for quick navigation so
you can find products at a glance. If you need to find a specific product, you can use the
list of key words, which lists all article names in alphabetical order, or the index, which lists
products by article number.
The success story of Otto Bock HealthCare is inseparately linked to the materials product segment. Innovative materials have always played a key role in the production of modern fittings for people with physical limitations. The development and production of medical technology products continues to depend on the ability to process, combine and refine
diverse materials such as wood, metal, textiles and leather. New plastic materials, as well
as titanium and carbon fiber, have been added. The field of electronics has expanded the
range of possibilities, from myoelectrically controlled arm prostheses to microelectronics
for the C-Leg prosthesis system. For us, high-tech also implies craftsmanship, which is
an indispensable part of fabricating products such as prosthetic sockets or orthotic components from a range of different materials. As a result, modern and cutting-edge materials form the basis for each high-quality fitting and provide the foundation for the economic success of your orthopedic workshop.

Thermoplastics in orthopedic technology
Thermoplastics are finding ever wider use in the production of orthopedic aids because of their special properties, such as quick and easy processing, minimum
weight, excellent hygienic characteristics as well as outstanding strength, stiffness
and shape retention. Thermoplastics can also be reshaped at any time.
An ever-expanding range of materials is required with the growing number of applications for thermoplastics in the production of prosthetics and orthotics. At the
same time, the development of increasingly high-quality plastics with extremely
complex molecular structures allows for a wider variety of processing methods.
This section provides you with a comprehensive technical overview of the plastic
sheeting available from Otto Bock.
The following technical overview describes treatment applications for thermoplastics and recommends ideal heating temperatures (heating plate, convection oven,
and infrared oven) for each material.

Technical information
Precise temperature control is absolutely essential for safe heating of plastic sheeting material.
The heating devices offered by Otto Bock are
designed using cutting-edge control technology to constantly ensure even temperature control, especially for ovens. Still, it is impossible
to avoid small percentage deviations between
the target value on the digital display and the
actual reading on the supporting surface of the
sheet material.
Deviations between target and actual values
are no more than 5-10%, depending on the
temperature.
To prevent the material from overheating, the
control system keeps the actual value below
the target value. We recommend calibrating all
heating devices before initial use (this means
comparing actual and target values for internal
and display temperatures).
Technical
information
Heating plastics
On the Otto Bock 759H4 Heating Plate, the
temperature set on the temperature display corresponds to the temperature of the heating element, i.e., the supporting surface of the sheet
material. Unlike ovens, heating plates must be
tested for the correct temperature setting range
using a piece of sample material.
Devices must be preheated to the required operating temperature before the material is inserted. The average time for preheating is 30
minutes.
The heating time specified in the material description cannot be applied linearly to other
material thicknesses. This is because thermal
conductivity decreases with increasing material thickness, and therefore disproportionately more heating time is required (e.g. approximately 15 minutes for 3 mm PE, about 35
minutes for 6 mm PE).

PP-C
The ThermoLyn PP copolymer is a thermoplastic sheet material that uses copolymerization to combine the benefits of polypropylene
and the toughness of polyethylene. The polypropylene copolymer (PP-C) obtained in this way
features much more impact strength than a homopolymer polypropylene (PP-H), especially at
low temperatures. The PP copolymer is easily
thermoformed and heat-sealed and is ideal for
placing around orthotic joints. The ThermoLyn
PP-C

All materials are characterized by specific absorption curves that demonstrate the relationship between wave length and absorption (degree of absorption).
To determine the ideal infrared radiation for an
infrared oven with respect to wavelength and
frequency, we need to know the absorption
spectrum of the materials to be heated. Polyolefins such as PE or PP are the plastics mainly
used in orthopedic technology. The absorption
curves of these materials show that the ideal
absorption of infrared radiation energy lies in
the medial infrared spectrum at a wave length
of approx. 3.5 .

Lamination technique
Plastics play an undisputedly important role in many areas of life. Their features complement and often surpass those of natural products.
Lamination
technique
Countless plastics have been finding wide use in orthopedic technology for many years.
Lamination resins are the most frequently used plastic, especially for handcrafting. They
are nearly perfect for making prosthetics because they are strong but lightweight and
shape-retaining yet thin. Lamination resins are also easy to clean, making them extra
hygienic.
Of the many types of resin used in prosthetic technology, Otto Bocks Orthocryl Resin is
the most dynamic. Orthocryl is a two-component methylmethacrylate resin that is colorless and transparent with a pourable consistency. C-Orthocryl Resin is designed especially for use with carbon fiber technology.
Unlike our other lamination resins, cured laminates made of Orthocryl Resin:

Fiber-reinforced composites:
Fiber-reinforced composites consist of a physical and chemical bond (adhesion) of the shaping matrix and reinforcing fibers.
Is generated only by joining the resin and fibers.
In addition to component design (fiber orientation, fiber content, number of layers, fabric), careful processing and curing are,
of course, crucial for the properties of the final product.
** Matrix:
Embedding material for reinforcing fibers
Fixes the fibers
Protects the fibers
Transmits force to the fibers
Absorbs forces transverse to the fibers
*** Fibers:
Embedding reinforcing fibers creates high-strength composites.
Ensure strength and stiffness
Absorbs forces longitudinal to the fibers

The possibility of combining materials, e. g. reinforcing fibers and a matrix, normally enables
the technician to modify the composites properties in a component. In orthopedic technology,
such high-strength fibers are used, for example, in the construction of heavy-duty prosthetic
components.
The final product of fiber fabrication is a bundle
of several thousands of single filaments in an
endless form. To allow further processing for
producing a component, textile semi-finished
products are made from these bundles. These
textile semi-finished products are known as rovings, weaves, braidings, bonded fabrics, as
well as mats and fleeces. The draping ability
of a fabric can be defined through the type of
bond it has. Good draping ability is important
for properly applying the fiber fabric to the shape of the model.
The possibility of selecting different kinds of textile surface constructions makes the use and
appropriate application of fiber materials easier. Unidirectional (UD) bonded fabrics, weaves or braidings can be used in accordance
with the progression of forces; especially braided stockinette, which is often used. Bands and
bar elements are typical components in orthopedic technology. If applied properly, braided
stockinette in laminates offers torsional stiffness; UD laminates first and foremost offer flexural stiffness and tensile strength.
The mechanical properties of a laminate can
only be achieved by embedding the fibers into
a resin system (matrix). The resin system assumes the following tasks:
A final material is only produced by a cross-linking reaction of the resin and hardener. With
epoxy resins, for example, curing takes place
through polyaddition. The different resin systems can be classified according to their chemical reaction behavior. Known lamination resin
materials that are used in orthopedic technology are polymerization resins such as acrylic
resins.
Acrylic resin laminates are usually fabricated
with fibers embedded in the matrix. The high
speed of polymerization of these lamination resins normally allows for short processing times.
Despite a great number of various products of
different suppliers, it is advisable to observe the
manufacturers instructions and to combine materials with each other only where this is intended exclusively for the respective applications.
This applies in particular to resin systems and
their combination with fiber materials.
For applications in orthopedic technology and
the manual fabrication of laminates through vacuum-forming, which is typical in this field, considerably lower fiber quantities are to be achieved. The quality and future capability of the
component to bear mechanical load are influenced by the length of the fibers, type of fiber,
fiber volume content, fiber orientation and the
resin system used.

The fiber-reinforced composite CFRP is composed of carbon fibers embedded in a plastic matrix. The carbon fibers are the main determinant for the mechanical properties of the
fiber-reinforced composites. The matrix designates the material that acts as an embedding mass for the fibers and is thus responsible for cohesion and force transmission
between the fibers, as well as for the shape
of the finished component. With predetermined orientation of the fibers, stability and stiffness can be substantially increased. Resins
such as epoxy resin, or phenolic resins and
foams such as polyurethane and polystyrene,
which provide good fiber cohesion and good
resistance to weathering, for example, are
used as matrix material. Carbon fibers have
highly versatile characteristics. They have a
relatively low specific gravity but a high level
of strength and stiffness, are chemically inert
to a large extent, electroconductive, thermally stable, infusible, biocompatible and permeable to X-rays. This allows the use of carbon
fibers in the most diverse fields.
The type of chemical bond created by the carbon atoms in the fiber structure, which is similar to graphite, is responsible for these excellent characteristics. Its strengths are superior
to those of most metals and of other fiber-reinforced composites. Utmost care and cleanliness is required when processing carbon fibers
in order to ensure the best performance of the
material. This applies to the fabrication of the
pre-products as well as of the finished component. Since the applied sizing can cause skin
allergies, protective gloves should be used for
all kind of fibers. The use of protective gloves
is also recommended to prevent moisture (perspiration) from entering the laminate. For other
prescribed safety measures, please refer to our
EU safety data sheets.

Carbon UD Stockinette
For axial reinforcement (bending forces) of thin-walled, high-strength resin
laminates. The circular woven Carbon UD Stockinette contains an elastic
weft thread, allowing the carbon threads to keep a 0 orientation regardless of their diameter.
These Carbon UD Stockinettes were specially designed for use with
acrylic resins (e.g. C-Orthocryl 617H55).
The advantage of the Carbon UD Stockinette is that for shaped models,
cutting or forming is not needed to the extent it is needed with other
carbon fiber cloth. Thanks to the elastic weft thread the Carbon UD
Stockinette adapts to the model. This can help to save a lot of valuable
working time during the fabrication of resin laminates.
Note: If the resin laminate is to have radial strength (torsion stress), additional reinforcement materials are required. In this case we recommend
using our 616G15 Woven Carbon Fiber Stockinette.

Unidirectional bonded fabrics: All fibers run in parallel side by side and
are only held in position by loosely looped warp threads; creation of a highly
anisotropic material.
Bidirectional bonded fabrics: Fibers are laid upon one another at an angle
of 90 and are connected by loose warp threads.
Multidirectional bonded fabrics: Fibers consist of two layers of bidirectional bonded fabrics lying upon one another at an angle of 45; multidirectional
bonded fabrics have isotropic properties (material properties are independent of direction), i. e. staggered arrangement of anisotropic layers results
in an isotropic material

Polytol is one of these innovative materials. The laminated, flexible inner socket
made of this polyurethane (PU) resin is a new alternative to flexible inner sockets
made of thermoplastic or silicone, or laminated sockets made of Orthocryl.
The innovative Polytol polyurethane lamination resin system is a high-quality,
colorless, transparent, polyurethane-based three-component resin. Prosthetic
sockets fabricated out of this aliphatic PU lamination resin system are skin-friendly and are notable for their high permanent elasticity in the defined areas compared to acrylic and epoxy resins. Because of its chemical composition, our PU
resin is particularly suitable for lamination work involved in the fabrication of flexible prosthetic sockets.
Please follow the instructions for processing and storing the PU Resin Kit Polytol found on the containers of Otto Bock products. Safety data sheets are available for materials that require labels according to the Ordinance on Hazardous
Substances. These EU safety data sheets (SDB) or Material Safety Data Sheets
(MSDS) contain important safety instructions for handling hazardous substances. Upon request, we can provide you with these data sheets in compiled form
on CD-ROM (article no. 646C16). Occupational safety and environmental protection factors according to the current state of knowledge have been taken into
consideration.
For a list of appropriate protective equipment for products with (risk and safety phrases) hazardous substance symbols, see Protective Equipment on page

Water transfer
printing
First, the desired decor is printed on a water soluble polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) foil.
This PVA foil is carefully laid out on the water. The chemical activator is then applied on the decor which results in floating. The piece, which is pretreated depending on material employed, can then be dipped into the water from above.
The upward pressure of the water causes the film to wrap around and adhere
to the piece without leaving seams. The resulting effect of the transfer printing is
also influenced by the base color, as the film only provides a decoration pattern.
Finally, the decor is sealed with a transparent topcoat which provides the sheen,
scratch resistance and surface feel.
Otto Bock offers this special coating technology as a service!
The following section provides more information on the ordering process.
The socket decor fabrics allow you to enhance your sockets with an attractive appearance. Otto Bock offers a wide range of designs with different patterns and
colors, including wildlife designs such as crocodile, leopard, jaguar and zebra.
All designs come with a fabric bag for lamination resin reinforcements which are
prefabricated in several different sizes to save you work. The designs are applied
to the finished socket in a lamination procedure using decor fabric.

Depending on the decor, the effect can be influenced with various base colors. Sealing is
performed using a clear varnish, which is used
to determine the sheen and surface feeling required.
Please note that the decors shown on the following pages do not necessarily correspond
to the actual color effect. Moreover, some decors contain special-effect colors, the effect
of which cannot be demonstrated properly on
these pages.
However, if the surface does require pre-treatment prior to surface finishing, this may involve
additional costs!

Thermoplastics with
antibacterial effectiveness
Thermoplastics with antibacterial effectiveness protect the skin and prosthetic socket
from a broad range of different microorganisms. The benefit for the user is that odor
and discoloration caused by microbes are considerably reduced and that the sockets longevity is extended. These additives thus provide for more comfortable wearing characteristics and health of the skin.
The family brand SKINGUARD Technology comprises different silver technologies
such as Sanitized and SilverShield.
The antibacterial and odor reducing properties of our thermoplastics are due to the
use of SilverShield technology. This novel technology has found its way into orthopedic technology through cooperation with North Sea Plastics.
What is SilverShield technology?
Thermopl. with
antibacterial
effectiveness
SilverShield technology is the first antibacterial product range of thermoplastics available to orthopedic technology. SilverShield plastics contain the antibacterial substance silver (argentum).
Thanks to its natural antibacterial properties, silver has been used in various fields for
about 3,000 years: In ancient Greece and Rome as well as in mediaeval times it was
used to disinfect water and store food. At the end of the 19th century, silver proved
successful as an antibacterial substance. Since that time, the efficiency and safety
of the metal have become well established.
Efcient reduction of odor production!
In SilverShield technology, silver is used during the manufacturing process to give
the plastic antibacterial properties. The silver ions bonded to the plastic efficiently fight
a wide spectrum of pathogenic bacteria and guarantee excellent skin tolerance. The
antibacterial properties of the SilverShield plastics are also excellent for reducing
odor buildup. However, it should be emphasized that the SilverShield technology is
not intended for infection prevention.

Padding materials
138
Padding materials
Padding materials
Today, competent orthopedic technicians or orthopedic shoe technicians can use
a various different padding materials of different shore hardnesses and dampening levels with a significantly wider range of applications.
The padding materials used are usually based on polyethylene (e.g. Pedilin,
Plastazote), copolymers of polyethylene such as EVA (e.g. Evazote) or polyurethane (e.g. PPT).
Padding
materials
Thermoplastic foams made of PE and EVA are the first choice for materials with
direct contact with the body. They can be used in many different areas (e.g. the
use of Pedilin for the manufacture of soft-walled inner sockets in prosthetics construction and for padding in traditional orthoses, as well as the use of Plastazote
for the production of corsets or positioning orthoses.

Stir before use! The surfaces/parts to be glued must be dry and free
of dust, oil and fat. For rubber, thermosetting plastics and similar
materials, we recommend roughening the surfaces. Apply Otto Bock
contact adhesive to both sides to be stuck together. After a drying time
of 5 20 minutes (depending on the thickness of the application and the
temperature), press the parts together briefly and firmly.

Note on processing
Lightly grind or roughen the materials; the surface must be free of
grease and parting agents. Depending on the material combination and
on the application procedure the dry-off time is 30 to 60 minutes. The
adhesive film must have become transparent. The drying process can
be accelerated by applying heat. The bonded components can be put
under load very soon after bonding. Can be diluted with water.

Processing instructions
Lightly grind or roughen the materials; the surface must be free of
grease and parting agents. Apply a thick layer of adhesive to the
materials to allow the formation of a good bonding film. The drying
process can be accelerated by applying heat. Depending on the material combination the dry-off time is 10 to 60 minutes. After joining and
pressing together the components, let them rest for a few hours. Can
be thinned with 634A71 Universal Thinner; do not use acetone!

The unique threadless design makes it quick and easy for patients to get
a secure fit. The valves click into place so patients know when the valve
is secured. These designs eliminate the twist or screw movement and
thereby avoid cross-threading or over tightening!

The 4R140 Discharge Valve used with a sleeve ejects excess air from the
socket during the stance phase and closes to prevent air from reentering
during the swing phase. This system minimizes friction and shearing
forces. The 4R140 Otto Bock Discharge Valve is only for use with transtibial prosthetic fittings. It is easy to assemble.

Protective equipment
Protective equipment
Otto Bock offers protective equipment for products which contain hazardous materials according to the Ordinance on Hazardous Substances. This includes products for protecting the users hands, face, eyes, respiratory tract and other parts
of the body. See our safety data sheets in section 8 for essential information about
personal protective equipment for each product.
We also offer first-aid equipment for accidents such as an eye-flushing station
and a first-aid kit.
Chemical resistance of gloves
Protective
equipment
It is especially important to use protective gloves. Otto Bock provides a comprehensive table with the protective gloves recommended for the products you are
using. The data in this table are based on the glove manufacturers many years
of experience as well as a database of over 70,000 tested substances. All of the
hazardous materials in Otto Bock products were tested for suitability. Thanks to
a diverse range of products, there is a suitable glove for each product. The data
in the table are based on DIN/EN 374 and should help you select the most appropriate glove. Permeation refers to molecular saturation of the glove material. The
time needed for permeation is expressed in levels. Permeation begins when the
glove is used with a chemical for the first time. After this, permeation can usually
no longer be stopped. It is therefore important to consider not only glove suitability but also its planned period of use in relation to cost-effectiveness. Since the
permeation process is usually irreversible, it is usually more cost-effective to use
two pairs of cheaper gloves with a shorter period of use than to use one expensive pair of gloves. If the hazardous material you are using is not in the list, you
can find more information in the relevant safety data sheet. All gloves without an
Otto Bock material number can be obtained on short notice.

The first and most important step for safe use of chemicals
is to know their identity, their risks to health and environment,
and the steps that need to be taken to keep these risks under control. This inherently complex knowledge must be organized in a way that essential information on the risks and
corresponding safety measures are recognizable and are
comprehensively communicated to the user, enabling you to
make the legally obligated risk analysis.

Table explanations:
Permeation
Level a: 0 min x < 5 min
Level b: 5 min x < 10 min
Swelling
Swelling can take place independently of penetration and permeation.
A swollen glove is completely unusable. For
this reason, Otto Bock only recommends using
gloves with no less than 15% swelling for the
chemical tested. DIN/EN 374 does not offer this
added assurance because it does not even include this test.

Level 3 means 100 % test for all chemical protective gloves. Therefore, this level has bee excluded from the following table.
Important:
The data in this table were calculated under
laboratory conditions (new gloves, no added
mechanical stress, room temperature) Reallife conditions may differ from laboratory conditions. As a result, this data can only serve as
a guide for selecting the appropriate gloves.
This data does not eliminate the need for suitability tests by the end consumer. Therefore,
Otto Bock HealthCare GmbH assumes no responsibility or liability for the contents of this
chemical resistance table.
