e x p l a i n i n g myths a s metaphoric d e s c r i p t i o n s o f n a t u r a l phenomena, while
Tylor and F r a z e r t h e o r i z e d t h a t myths were t h e e x p r e s s i o n s o f t h e pres c i e n t i f i c thought of savages. I n t h i s c e n t u r y Jung argues t h a t a r c h e t y p e s

what i s found i n myths i n f z c t seems absurd. However, on t h e l e v e l o f
r e l a t i o n s h i p s between i d e a s , a p a t t e r n emerges t h a t s e r v e s a s a subconscious
t o o l f o r overcoming t h e c o n t r a d i c t i o n . The t r u e meaning o f myths l i e s i n
a s t r u c t u r e of r e l a t i o n s h i p s , 2nd it i s t h i s s t r u c t u r e and i t s o p e r a t i o n
a s a mental t o o l t h a t concerns Levi-Strauss.
Such a swzeping t h e o r y demands evidence t h a t ij convincing both i n q u a l i t y

t o Ashes i s d i f f i c u l t t o f o l l o w -- w e l l w r i t t e n , yes; but t h e g o a l s and
-t h e t h r e a d of t h e argument a r e o f t e n l o s t i n t h e volume of d e t a i l e d a n a l y s i s
of myths t h a t he p r e s e n t s . There i s a. whole l i t e r a t u r e o f c r i t i c i s m
aimed a t L e v i - S t r a u s s f s methods. Some c a l l h i s work a l i t e r a r y r a t h e r than
a s c i e n t i f i c e f f o r t , and o f t e n h i s a s s o c i a t i o n s appear a r b i t r a r y . I n
e f f e c t he s a y s "whatever i s , i s r i g h t , " s i n c e he p u l l s whatever meaning
o u t of a mythical element t h a t he needs t o complete h i s p a t t e r n . I n t h e
same vein he s a y s "whatever I s a y i s r i g h t , " s i n c e he h a s determined t h e
master p l a n whicki the myths a r e manipulated t o confirm. Meanwhile t h e
r e a d e r simply follows along and a c c e p t s . Of course t h e i n t e n t of this
volume i s t o provide evidence f o r a ,wider argument, .and n o t t o be s e l f supporting i n terms o f method and t h e o r y . As such, t h e novice should
a v o i d i t u n l e s s he i s a l r e a d y acquainted with S t r u c t u r a l Anthropology,
