Literacy Lesson Plan

Literacy Lesson Plan for Emergent Reader:


The child that this literacy lesson plan diet is made for is a four-year-old in preschool who
is an emergent reader. This child is able to draw a picture and talk to me about what she
drew, she is also able write her name at the bottom of the page even though the letters
are not written in the right order. Her concept of print is well developed she just cant
point out the uppercase letter, or the period. The child knows most of her alphabet and
can name 17 out of the 26 letters of the alphabet.

Materials needed:
1. A familiar sentence from a nursery rhyme, song, or favorite classic book
2. Blank cards with magnets on back

Time for this part of lesson: 6 minutes

Procedure:
1. Use a blank card for each word in the sentence. The sentence being used is
Mary had a little lamb. Place the cards on the board in order of the
sentence. Review the sentence sever times until all the students can repeat
it correctly. As the sentence is said, point to each card.
2. Have the students come up one at a time and have them point to the words
as we say the sentence out loud.
3. Pick the student to be the sentence sleuth to come up to the board. Then
read the sentence again and change a word in the sentence (ex: Mary had a
little cat) and have the student pick out the word that was changed.

Time for this part of lesson: 6 minutes

Procedure: Before we start the read aloud ask the student a


few questions about the book. Some questions that you could
as are show me the front of the book, show me the back of
the book and show me the title of the book. Then finish
asking the question by asking what do you think this book is
going to be about? During the read aloud start by reading 2 or 3 pages and then
stop on a page and ask another question. Ask the student Can you show me a
word? and Can you show me a letter in a word? Finish reading the rest of the
book and once the book is finished hand the book to the student. Ask the student
to find a picture that is in the book and to point out the first letter of a word on a
page in the book.

Materials needed: Large sheet of paper with alphabet written on it and colorful
pens

On the sheet of paper, write the letters of the alphabet in order.


Hang the paper on the board at a height that the children can reach.
The teacher will pick a random letter to say to the student.
The child will use the classroom pointer to point to the letter that they think
matches to what I said.
5. If the child messes up and points to the wrong letter, I will correct the
student and tell them the right answer.

Materials needed: Chart paper and markers

Time for this part of lesson: 6 minutes.

Procedure:
1. Introduce this game to the child by saying We are going on a picnic and we
need to bring several things that begin with a particular letter, such as
the /m/ sound.
2. Help the child with thinking of items that begin with the highlighted sounds.
Write these items down on the chart paper.
3. Once a few items with the same sound are written down on the paper read
them out loud and see if the child can tell you if the first letter is the same. If
they can do this see if the child can identify what letter it is.
4. After this is done, you can start the activity over again with a new beginning
letter.

Materials needed: Plastic bags, pieces of paper with the letters


of the childs name on them cut into different pieces, and a blank
notecard.

Time for this part of lesson: 6 minutes.


Procedure:
1. Place the letters of a childs name in a bag.

2. Let the child pick the letters out of the bag and put them in the correct order
to spell their name.
3. Have the child write their name on a note card from left to right.
