The official newsletter of Byzantium Novum

Issue #13 (May 2016)

And yet Byzantium was at the same time a place of startling strangeness, alluring yet
quite alien to the modern world. Holy men perched atop pillars, emperors ascended
pulpits to deliver lashing sermons, and hairsplitting points of theology could set off
riots in the streets. Lost to the West, by Lars Brownworth (page xiv)

PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE

Greetings to the Citizens of Byzantium
Novum!
This month marks one of the most
important Byzantine anniversaries. On the
11th of May in 330 AD, the Emperor
Constantine
officially
consecrated
Constantinople as the new capital of the
Roman Empire. It is amazing to think that the
new beginning he set for the Roman world is
continued again and growing some 1,686
years later.
On this anniversary of that event I am
pleased to announce that Byzantium Novum
has officially passed 600 Citizens!
There are times when it doesn't seem
obvious that our micronation is thriving, but if
you take the time to visit our Citizen map
at: http://www.communitywalk.com/byzant
ium_novum_citizen_map/map/543922, you
can see that the seed of Byzantium has indeed
been replanted and is growing anew!
We still have seven more months in our
sixth year, and it is likely that we will hit 650
Citizens in 2016. We could do even better if
Citizens help get the word out! Please do

remember to mention Byzantium Novum to

people when you can, in person, or on
Facebook, or even by helping to post free ads
on Craig's List. We can all help to continue
Byzantium Novum's mission to "Restore
Byzantine Civilization and Culture" to the
world.
This month, I am pleased to bestow the
position of Patrikios on our own Senator
Marcus Minucius Audens, in recognition for
his
fine
engineering
blog
at:
http://byzantiumnovummilitarium.blogspot.
com/ and for his ongoing efforts to provide
the forums of Byzantium Novum with
interesting content. I hope that everyone will
join me in recognition of his good work!
I hope that everyone has a wonderful day
on the 11th, which we promote as
International
Byzantine
Day:
http://www.byzantiumnovum.org/internatio
nal_byzantine_day.htm and I look forward to
talking with you all in the forums!
MARCUS CASSIUS JULIANUS

PROCEEDINGS OF THE MINISTRIES

PROCEEDINGS OF THE CHANCELLERY

Thanks to the hard work of our citizens and
their willingness to do something, we are
making continued progress towards meeting
the goals set by the Glorious President of the
Senate, Marcus Cassius Julianus. These goals are:
Increase participation on our Main
Yahoo Groups List (this appears to be
happening, but needs to be sustained
for several more months)
A fully functioning Ministry of
Finance (not yet)
Establishing two new colonies
(Magna Lacus and Floribus, as well
as the Exarchy of Sarmatia Magna)
Reaching 600 citizens (achieved this
goal on 7 May)
Appointment of a Grand Chartulary
(not yet)
Thank you for all you are doing please
continue!
The Chancellery is currently reviewing
two documents which will be important to
all of us: the draft Constitution of our
Empire (prepared by Count Publius
Quinctius Petrus Augustinus vir clarissimus,
hpatos, patrikios, the Imperial Quaesitor)
and a draft guide to forming new branches
(prepared by Count Lucius Vitellius Triarius).
Reviewing them will take a while, because
we want to get them right.
I am making an administrative change
regarding count appointments. In the past,
if someone was a count for a year, then took
a long break and asked to be made a count
again, I put them before the senate for the
next higher level. Henceforth, if the break is
more than 30 days, counts names will be
placed before the Senate to be a count third
class regardless of their former county rank.

BASILICA
In addition, I am suspending the annual
and semi-annual reports. I have never
gotten complete reports from everyone, and
it seems like an inordinate burden on
ministers and governors.

the West, especially after the Fourth Crusade in

1204 AD. As a result, there is Catholic Church
in the West (the Pope) and Orthodox Church in
the East based on the Nicene Creed.
The Roman World ended in 1453 AD after
the fall of Constantinopolis (Nova Roma).
Christianity was not the imperial religion
before Constantine the Great and Theodosius.
Why Christianity had success is due to many
reasons, but it was for both men and women,
while Mithraism, for example, was only for
men. In contrast, the cult of Isis was only for
women.
The decline of paganism and Mithraism
came with Constantine the Great who took
Christian symbolic after a prophetic dream.
This was the battle of the Milvian bridge in 312
AD. Emperor Constantine the Great won and
respectfully Christianity won, and other cults
and religions lost.
Christianity was popular because it fought
against all religions in the Roman World (Pax
Romana), and it could not coexist with them.
Mithraism was popular among men and
Roman legions, but it could not attract women.
However, Christianity took many aspects from
Mithraism, as a result there are many common
things, which are not coincidence. This was the
story more or less. Hope I answered your
questions.
This is more or less, dear reader, on
Christianity.

THOUGHTS ON CRISTIANITY
AND PAX ROMANA
Dear reader,
Here is part of a letter on Orthodox faith,
which I wrote to a friend. You asked me to
write you on Christianity. It will be difficult to
answer your questions in a brief letter. One can
write a whole paper. The Christian faith
became official in 380 AD and the Roman
Empire split in two in 393/395 AD. The
Christian faiths full name in Eastern Roman
Empire (Byzantium) is One Holy Catholic and
Apostolic Orthodox Church. There was one
common Catholic (common/one) Church
before the Great Schism in 1054 AD, but
Western Roman Empire fell in 476 AD. The
Western Church deviated from the Nicene
Creed. The Nicene Creed was common rules
established by the Church Fathers. The
Orthodox Church cannot forget the betrayal of

NEWS FROM NOVIODUNUM

Greetings all,
I am pleased to say that Spring has been a
busy time in the Byzantium Novum Colony
of Noviodunum!
On the first weekend of April, Citizens of
Noviodunum attended New England's only
ancient Roman conference, MithraCon, or
the New England Conference on Mithraic
studies in New Haven CT. This is a research
conference centered around a day of studies
at the world-class Yale University Library,
which is a treasure trove of impossible to
find ancient and medieval scholarly works
and journals. This years event was a
5

BASILICA
wonderful success, and included historical
presentations and a Roman dinner.
On the first weekend of May, Legio III
Cyrenaca, an Imperial to Late Roman
reenactor group recognized and sponsored
by Byzantium Novum, marched in the May
Day parade in Kennebunk Maine. The crowd
of about two thousand people got to see
proud Romans marching in full gear, and as
always this was one of the hits of the event!
Getting out into the public eye is hugely
important... it really raises awareness about
the importance of history. Many thanks to
Legio III for another wonderful effort!
Even though Noviodunum is by no means
the biggest Colony in Byzantium Novum, we
do our best to get together when we can. If
"Things Byzantine" can happen in New
England, they can happen anywhere and we
hope our fellow villages, colonies, provinces
and themes will also find ways to hold their
own events, and participate in the historical
events sponsored by others!

determine). In 613 AD, this area was torn

from the old Empire by the Persians.

This beautiful map is done in tiles and

depicts the Middle East, principally what is
now Israel and Jordan, including Jerusalem.
It was formerly more complete than it now
is. The Islamic rulers, reflecting their ban on
portraying the human figure, removed those
parts they saw as offensive to their religion.
Finally, the city was largely destroyed in an
earthquake in 746 AD and abandoned.
The church was discovered anew in 1884,
when a new church was built on the site of
the old St George church in Madaba.
However, the map was not protected from
the elements and large parts of the map
were destroyed by fire, human activity in
the church, and the effects of moisture.
Ultimately, the wonderful folks at
Volkswagen donated 90,000 marks to the
German Society for the exploration of
Palestine, to save and preserve the mosaic.

THE MADABA MAP

I am a huge map fan. Ive loved maps since I
was a boy. Ive studied maps and made my
own. I am especially interested in medieval
maps, since they are so different than
modern maps.

One of the most famous maps from the

medieval era is the Madaba map, which was
found in the Byzantine-era church of St
George in Madaba, Jordan. It was created in
about 540-570 AD (the exact date is hard to

Sea. The artwork is exquisite, showing the
land and sea wildlife of the area but focused
on the city of Jerusalem.
This mosaic is the oldest known
geographic mosaic in art history. It has been
used to verify religious sites tied to the
scriptures and led to further excavations of
other sites, some of which were buried four
meters in the ground.
There are some noteworthy copies. The
University of Gttingen has one in their
Archaeological Institute. Another can be
found in the Akademisches Kunstmuseum in
Bonn.

translated is an easy evenings read but you

will learn a lot in that short time.
I learned a lot reading this book. For
example, I had been unaware that other
countries also made use of the technology. I
was also unaware that naphtha is a Persian
word. I was also previously unaware of the
various names by which Greek Fire was
known he provides a whole list of them!
The book contains an excellent discussion
about the composition of Greek Fire. I dont
want to ruin the surprise by disclosing the
plot, but it wasnt what I expected.
Please go to your favorite bookstore
(online or in person) and pick up this
wonderful book. This book deserves your time
for a couple of reasons. Not only is this book
informative, it was written by a citizen of
Byzantium Novum!

Byzantium Novum is a micro-nation dedicated to the
rebirth of Byzantine culture and civilization which was
formed to be a small, legitimate successor state to the
Byzantine Empire. We exist as a micro-national
sovereignty project, working to bring Byzantine
civilization to life in the modern world as much as
possible. Our goal is to establish a physical, symbolic and
administrative world capital of 100 acres or more, where
the Byzantine State may have a real-world existence and
coordinate Byzantine interests around the world.
For more information, visit our website at

It is the Chancellerys goal to publish this newsletter
in February (to observe our founding), May (to observe
Byzantium Day), August (to observe the end of the
Byzantine year) and November (to observe the Christmas

The typeface used in Basilica is called Skia. It is based
