their annual convention, which
gathers members from over 600
youth councils, high school and
college chapters July 11-15 in
Kansas City, Mo.
The convention will be held
concurrently with the NAACPs
101st Annual Convention.

Director Stefanie Brown in a
statement, With the unveiling
of the Youth Civil Rights
Agenda, among other upcoming
initiatives, the NAACP is poised
to show that youth is and will
continue to be at the forefront of
civil and human rights.
The 2010 gathering will
highlight the NAACPs new civil
rights agenda and allow members
to discuss legislation affecting
young adults. They will also
attend various workshops and
enjoy appearances by R&B star,

Black Youths at Increased
Risk for Drowning
A recent study released
by USA Swimming and the
University of Memphis found
the majority of Black children
are at risk for drowning.
The study, The Constraints
Impacting Minority Swimming
Participation, Phase II, found
that 70 percent of Black children
have low or no swim ability,
compared to 40 percent of
White children. Researchers also
concluded that Black parents
own fears about swimming play
a major role in their childrens
inability to swim.
The study was conducted
Feb.1 - May 26 and surveyed
more than 2,000 children and
parents in six cities across the
country, including Atlanta,
Boston, Denver, Memphis,
Minneapolis and San Diego.
According to the report,
fear of drowning was the
strongest predictor of swimming
ability, along with the belief
that chlorine is particularly
harmful to African-American
skin and hair. Also, Black
children who are able to swim
are less likely to receive training
from a certified instructor.
Twenty-six percent of Black
children surveyed said they
taught themselves to swim,
which researchers believe may
promote a false sense of self
confidence.

girl has been kept from school
for several weeks.
According to the Seattle
Times, Charles Mudede, the girls
father, said no one at the school
explained what happened in his
daughters classroom. Mudede
said the family would like to
know why the teacher believed
his daughters hair made her
sick and why the school did not
recognize the racial overtones
of a White teacher removing her
only African-American student
from class.
To protect her self-esteem,
Mudede reportedly said hes
spoken with his daughter about
valuing her appearance and the
pressures of straightening her hair
to emulate her White classmates.

indigent country, which is
still recovering from the toll
of 2008s Hurricanes Fay,
Gustav, Hanna and Ike, which
killed about 800 people within
a month and devastated large
parts of the country.
Sell said the Red Cross
and other NGOs have hired
Haitians to assist in hurricane
emergency preparations such
as: digging ditches to channel
water down hillsides, shoring
up hillsides with sandbags,
leveling land, laying gravel,
teaching first aid, and marking
emergency evacuation
routes. And, in areas where
mitigation efforts prove futile,
residents have been relocated,
Weisenfeld added.
The humanitarian network
has also pre-positioned
supplies of water, food,
blankets, medical supplies
and other necessities at
various sites throughout the
country.
This extended emergency

UN said could continue for
the next 12 to 18 monthsis
raising some concern with the
pace of sustainable rebuilding
efforts in Haiti.
I think the worry we

my middle sons youth football
team. Football practice begins
in August and I have spent
the last two weeks reading
up on defensive alignments,
surfing coaching websites,
and sending e-mail to some
of the high school coaches in
the area begging for coaching
tips. If I watch one more video
of conditioning exercises for
defensive linemen my head is
going to explode. I have begun
dreaming in Xs and Os. of those children 85 percent are coached by a father of one

again. Why? Well, I guess its because I have grown to love
coaching. Unless one loves it, there is really no other reason to
be a youth coach.
A person certainly wont get rich coaching youth sports.
In fact, often a youth coach will lose money over the course
of a season. Every coach I know spends his own money to
pay for extra equipment and materials. Most of the coaches I
know spend additional money on books and clinics in order
to expand their knowledge. More than one coach I know
has paid the registration fee for a boy whose parents were
having financial difficulties. These coaches didnt open their
wallets because the boy was a superstar, (although I have also
witnessed performance purchasing). Rather, the coach paid the
fee because the boy wanted to play.
The truth is that coaching can often seem like one big
headache after another. A coach must contend with equipment
shortages, limited practice time, and bizarre and negative
interactions with parents. Buy a youth coach a beer and let him
regale you with tales of parents gone wild. Every coach has at
least one such story. And success doesnt guarantee that parents
will behave as if they have some sense. In some instances
winning actually makes them behave worse. I had two parents
threaten me with violence because during a game I told their
son to hustle. Our team was undefeated!
According to The Center for Kids First, each year 40-50
million children participate in youth sports. The vast majority
and maturation over the course of a season. And I love knowing
of the children on the team. Youth coaches spend an average
of 11 hours per week with their young charges. Thats a lot of
children, and a lot of fathers who volunteer a lot of time.
Put another way, millions of parents place the physical and
emotional well-being of their children into the hands of a small
number of men, most of whom are married and have children
of their own.
And much is expected from these mostly untrained
volunteers. Youth coaches are asked to be teachers, strategists,
babysitters, nurses, and social workers.
Parents enroll their children in youth sports in hope that
their children will learn physical skills that will allow them to
stay active throughout their lives, that they will develop a sense
of belonging, and that it will promote their moral development.
In other words: Sports build character. But this vaunted
character that comes from participation in organized sports does
not happen by magic; picking up a ball does not automatically
strengthen a childs moral fiber. Character must be taught. And
to whom does the duty fall? The youth coach.
And when there is dysfunction in a childs home the
problems tend to follow the players onto the field. When
the parents are experiencing marital difficulties, when there
is alcoholism or abuse, or when the family dog dies, these
volunteers are still expected to persevere. With no professional
training and even less warning youth coaches must navigate
the emotional waters, continue to teach, and win on Saturday!
But, I do love it. I love seeing the eagerness in the boys
eyes, I love hearing their young laughter, I enjoy watching the
passion with which they play. I love witnessing their growth
that in some small way the work I do may contribute to their
life-long love of the game of football.
It may be selfish, but this Fathers Day I am also going to
lift a glass of whatever-I-happen-to-be-drinking and salute the
dads that volunteer, the fathers that take the time to learn a sport
they have never played, or to re-educate themselves in a sport
they have not played in years. We parents put our sons and
daughters into their hands and ask that they teach our precious
ones the value of hard work, the necessity of discipline, and
most important, the joy of competitive sports.

have taken a lesson from the campaigns of David Dinkins or
Harold Washington or Doug Wilders election as governor of
Virginia and other Blacks who ran for citywide or statewide
offices where Blacks were in the minority. They also had the
necessity to build outward from their base to achieve interracial
political coalitions but did not decide to junk the Black vote in
the process and go for the White vote hoping that some Blacks
would follow and build a coalition.
In the aftermath of Davis fall from front-runner to
humiliated loser, political autopsies are being performed by
political experts and the media.
In an editorial, the Birmingham News stated, There is
reliable data to make the case that Blacks did indeed abandon
Davis for the more progressive Sparks, who campaigned on
instituting a state lottery and said he would have voted for
health-care reform had he been in Congress. If nothing else,
those results show the Black vote cannot be taken for granted
anymore in Alabama. Just ask Rep. Artur Davis.

and silenced a voice that
transcended soul, pop, R&B
and international music.

radio waves in several
years, Jackson became
the progenitor of todays
modern pop stars, whose
personal lives have become
inextricably linked to major
headlines and controversy.
Even in death, Jackson
has been unable to avoid
scandal. His parents are now
embroiled in a public feud;
media outlets have questioned
whether his three children

becoming a singer. In fact, her
various dwellings strongly
shaped her musical prowess.
With gospel music at heart,
TolumiDE hopes to convey
a message that is totally her
own.
Born in Canada and raised
in Nigeria, TolumiDE got her
start in music at a young age
when she joined various youth
choirs in her community.
After graduating from high
school, she relocated back to
Canada where she enrolled
at York University. It was
here that her musical interests
began to form.
