Classroom Technology Plan
Description of classroom makeup
I currently teach Algebra 1 at Reservoir High School in Fulton, Maryland. All 5 of my classes
are co taught and I teach 143 students; 26 White, 70 Black/African American, 29
Hispanic/Latino, 3 Asian, and 15 Other. 24.4% of the total school population receives free or
reduced lunch. Currently I do not know how many of my students specifically fall into that
category. Of those 143 students 32 of them are either special education students or students who
currently have a 504. I also have 25 ESOL students in my classes.
In my classroom I have a school issued MacBook, a document camera, a mounted projector, a
mounted TV and 27 TI-83 Plus calculators. Most of the technology in the classroom is teachercentered technology with the exception to the graphing calculators that my students use. When
students enter the room the warm up is projected on the screen for students to work on.
Homework answers and classwork answers are displayed under the document camera to speed
up the process of checking answers. Occasionally notes are placed under the document camera
so that students are able to follow along with class, but normally notes are presented on the
blackboard.
Last year my county adopted the bring your own device policy (BYOD) for high schools. At
designated times students are allowed to use their phones to do work in classes. In my classroom
at the present time, we do not use the devices for very much. Most students have their own
device to use, so if we play Kahoot, for a review game, students would be ale to participate. I
also have my students check their grades often using the Canvas or Synergy apps on their
phones. In the math department we do have 2 sets of mobile labs to be used. One is designated
for Algebra 1 and one is for Geometry. The mobile lab has 32 Dell laptop computers and a
printer.
I have set up WebQuests for my students to work on to learn new topics at different points during
the year. That was met with mixed reviews. Some students really enjoyed being able to work at
their own pace, while other students responded better to teacher-led discussions. I did find that it
really helped my ESOL students because they were able to replay videos and see a clear picture
of what was being taught. I didnt have as many special education students as I do this year, but
I think again that being able to replay material being taught would benefit the special education
students I teach as well. My students need enrichment in learning how to use outside resources
to supplement what they are learning. That could be from videos or online quizzes.
Vision Statement
In my classroom it is my goal to have all students learning at their highest achievement level.
Preparing students for the 21st century is also one of my goals, which means utilizing more
technology in my classroom. Students will use a combination of their own devices and Dell
laptops to reinforce skills learned in class. Students and teachers will hold discussions on
Canvas to collaborate about topics being learned. Students will be expected to post videos

(found online or self made) and comment back to each other on how the video relates to what we
are learning in class.
Goals, Objectives, Evaluation
Goals
Students will use
technology to review for
upcoming quizzes or tests.

Students will use

technology to reflect on
material not mastered in a
previous assessment.

Objectives
Students will take teacher made
practice quizzes on Canvas
before the day of an assessment
and perform at an 80% accuracy
given 3 tries.

Evaluation
Canvas will keep the
students highest score of
the three tries and that
grade will be recorded as a
performance indicator.

Students will create one review

question to be posted to a
Canvas discussion board and
will need to respond to at least
one other students question.

Students will be assessed

on the quality of the
question that is asked
based on the topic being
learned.

Students will create a video or

find one online to explain
designated problem(s) given the
material they need to go over
again.

Students will also be

evaluated on responding to
another students question.
The evaluation will be
based on a rubric to identify
the understanding of key
features of the problem
assigned.

After students have created a

video they will take a teacher
made quiz on Canvas on
previous material not mastered
and perform at 90% accuracy
given 2 tries.

Students will be evaluated

on the scores they receive
from the practice quizzes.

Current Technology
The best technology that I can use inside my classroom to fulfill the goals and objectives stated
would be the use of the mobile Algebra 1 cart that we have. Currently students are able to get on
Canvas during classtime using their mobile devices. They are not able to use all features of
Canvas on their device, which limits them during class. If the cart was brought in and students
were able to do a station rotation they could have better access to Canvas. Using Canvas is new
to the students this year as well, so giving them more opportunities to explore the features will
make them more comfortable once quizzes and discussions are being introduced.

In order to meet the goals listed using the current technology, once a week students will either
participate in a discussion or take a quiz on Canvas. Students have been about to use their own
devices to take quizzes, but at times some of the images dont load quickly or they dont load at
all on the mobile devices. Bringing in the mobile lab would allow students to use the full version
of Canvas. For some of my students they dont have their own devices, so again bring in the cart
would ensure that all students are able to participate in the discussion or take the practice
quizzes.
Since students are able to use their own devices in class, using their phones to record videos
would help with the second objective. Students use their own devices all of the time outside of
school and by working on the use of their 21st century skills it is important to teach students how
their devices can be used for an educational purpose. By using the Canvas app on their phones
students will be able to quickly upload videos to discussion posts. Students can also respond to
discussions using their own mobile devices.
Additional Technology
It would be ideal for my classroom to be a 1:1 device room. It is very beneficial for every
student to have an equal opportunity to use devices during class. Having school issued devices
would be helpful to cut down on the use of their own apps or messaging services. While having
mobile devices in the classroom is very helpful, some students arent ready for the responsibility
of using their own devices and being able to ignore the outside use of them in the classroom.
Currently two Algebra 1 teachers have to share the Dell laptop cart between eight classes. It can
be a problem trying to book the cart and stay on pace with the calendar of topics. As I look to
making my classroom an environment where I can prepare my students for the 21st century,
adding 10 iPad Air 2s would help my students. While the Dell computers on the laptop cart will
be useful to help with Canvas, it will be important to have devices that students can record
videos on. It is recommended from the county that if multiple larger apps are being installed or
if numerous videos and pictures will be taken on the device that a 64GB model be used. If a
student doesnt feel comfortable recording a video they will also have the option to find videos
on YouTube or other video platforms to post to the discussion board. Having the options of the
iPads in the room will ensure that all students are able to search for those videos.
In addition to the iPads being able to record videos, students will be able to log in to Canvas as
well. The mobile labs we have are old and the computers are very slow to load. Between the
combination of students using their own device and having 10 iPads in the room all students
needs should be able to be met using personal devices. Being able to access the material faster
means more hands on learning, instead of sitting and waiting for a computer to load.
Having the iPads in the classroom in addition to students own devices will help ensure that all
students are able to participate in Canvas discussions simultaneously. Students will be able to
work on either the iPad or their phone and post review questions to the unit test discussion board.
Additionally, students will be able to answer back and help each other review and study for the
quizzes. If students are able to verbalize how to work out problems they are more successful at
doing the problems themselves.

Budget
The chart below outlines the professional development and equipment needed to ensure my goals
and objectives are met with my Classroom Technology Plan. Since we already have a mobile lab
of 30 Dell laptops, more computers are not needed. What is needed is the use of iPad Airs. The
Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) has a bid with Apple for a 10 pack of iPads
listed at $6,530.00. Not included is the holding station that will also store and lock up the iPads.
Between Math Gathers and professional development opportunities over the summer, teachers
will be trained on some of the different properties of Canvas.

Professional Development
Over the course of the year we have had many trainings on how to use Canvas. The main focus
of these trainings has been to show teachers how to create a homepage and how to enter and post
grades. In the upcoming year teachers will be expected to integrate Canvas into more daily class
routines as they fit into the classroom. Consequently, more training will be needed on a county
level and also a curriculum level so that all teachers feel comfortable using this Learning
Management System in their classroom. Last summer webinars were offered for teachers to
watch for CPD credits. Some teachers didnt take advantage of the webinars. Offering either
CPD credits or workshop wages ($20 per hour) may entice more staff members to participate.
Another option to offer trainings would be to hold sessions during the summer curriculum
workshops or monthly at our county math gathering meetings. Since the goals in my classroom
technology plan focus on teachers making quizzes, it would be nice to work with other teachers
to build an assessment item bank. During this time teachers could come together and search for
sample videos to show students, learn how to upload videos, learn how to create quizzes and start
discussions. Teachers could look at old assessments and start to build their bank of review

questions based on previous years. For the most part these sessions would be teacher led
sessions, but people from the county math department could also lead sessions.
To establish what professional development is needed at monthly math gatherings, each meeting
could conclude by asking teachers to list ideas for future trainings. Normally an agenda of ideas
is made at the county level, but this would enable teachers to have a voice in the training. As
teachers try quizzes and discussions in class the next month they could share strategies that they
used successfully in their classes.
Most of these meetings are currently held at one of two different schools. Another option could
be holding the math gatherings at different schools so that more teachers will choose to
participate. This could also give departments a chance to showcase their technology set-ups and
give other schools and idea of what useful technology they could incorporate into their schools.
