How to install Hyper-V

To install and use the Hyper-V role, you need the following:
1. An x64-based processor. Hyper-V is available in x64-based versions of
Windows Server 2008specifically, the x64-based versions of Windows
Server 2008 Standard, Windows Server 2008 Enterprise, and Windows
Server 2008 Datacenter.
2. Hardware-assisted virtualization. This is available in processors that include a
virtualization optionspecifically, Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) or
AMD Virtualization (AMD-V).
3. Hardware-enforced Data Execution Prevention (DEP) must be available and
be enabled. Specifically, you must enable the Intel XD bit (execute disable
bit) or AMD NX bit (no execute bit)

Steps to install the Hyper-V role as follows:

1. In the Initial Configuration Tasks window, under Customize This Server, click
Add roles. The Add Roles Wizard opens.
2. On the Before You Begin page, click Next.
3. On the Select Server Roles page, select Hyper-V, and then click Next.
4. On the Hyper-V page, click Next.
5. On the Create Virtual Networks page, do not select any Ethernet cards,
and then click Next
6. On the Confirm Installation Selections page, click Install.
7. You must restart the computer to complete the installation of the Hyper-V
role. Click Close to finish the wizard, and then click Yes to restart the
computer.
8. After the computer has restarted, log on using the Administrator account,
and after the Resume Configuration Wizard completes the installation, click
Close.

To open Hyper-V Manager and configure Hyper-V settings

1. On your virtualization server, log on using the Administrator account. Then to
open Hyper-V Manager, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then
click Hyper-V Manager.
2. The welcome page for Hyper-V is displayed the first time that you open
Hyper-V Manager. This page includes links to online content that you might
want to review. To open the local Help content that is included with Hyper-V,
press F1, or in the Actions pane, click Help.
3. To connect to the local virtualization server, in the console tree, under HyperV Manager, click the computer name of your virtualization server.

4. This step is necessary because you can manage other virtualization servers
from one Hyper-V Manager window. You can change management between
the local server and other virtualization servers by just selecting them in the
console tree. If you want to test a scenario that uses this functionality, see
Manage Virtual Machines Remotely With Hyper-V Manager and Windows 7 in
this guide.
5. To configure Hyper-V settings, in the Actions pane, click Hyper-V Settings. The
Hyper-V Settings dialog box appears.
6. To change a setting, in the left navigation pane, click the setting that you
want to configure.
7. For example, you can change the default folders where the virtual machines
and the virtual hard disk drives that you create are stored. Note that this
setting only specifies the default folders to useyou still have an opportunity
to specify a different folder when you create virtual machines and virtual hard
disks. You can also change some of the user settings such as how Windows
key combinations are used, or which combination of keys releases the mouse
when it is captured in a virtual machine (for example, when the virtual
machine is starting, before the operating system is loaded).
8. To save the changes that you make to a setting, click Apply.
9. To save your changes and close Hyper-V Settings, click OK.
Note: Hyper-V version used in Windows server 2008R2 (Enterprise) is 6.1

Backup Steps:
1. Create client with no-dataset , but select "Use service with all non-excluded
writers" to get a backup.
2. specify the following in exclude plug-in config dataset.
VSS:/ASR Writer;VSS:/BITS Writer;VSS:/COM+ REGDB Writer;VSS:/Performance
Counters Writer;VSS:/Registry Writer;VSS:/Shadow Copy Optimization
Writer;VSS:/System Writer;VSS:/Task Scheduler Writer;VSS:/VSS Metadata Store
Writer;VSS:/WMI Writer
So that Hyper-V writer gets automatically included in dataset.

3. The completed backup can be verified from the browse and restore option as
shown in the screen shot below.

Backup behavior in Hyper-V:

Full backup working as expected but, Incremental and differential works like full
backup. Any changes made after full backup will be included in next differential or
incremental backup.
For example:
If you have full backup of VM of size 8GB. You made some changes of some 500MB,
and then next incremental or differential backup size will be 8.5GB.
Restore Steps:
There are no any special steps require to start restore. It works like normal restore.
After restore VM will get restored in power off mode.
1. If VM already exists in hyper-V manager, then it will delete the existing VM of
same name without any confirmation and restore the backed up VM.

2. If VM does not exist at the time of restore then it will create the fresh VM and
start the restore.
Restore of full, differential and incremental backup works fine.
