Stop Stick ends chase in Evart

By Andy Duffy
Weekly Voice

Evart The Evart Police Department has had the resource.

It just never had the opportunity to use it until recently.
The resource? A Stop Stick.
A Stop Stick is a tire deflation
device. Police departments use
them for three reasons, Beam
said: To protect the community,
to protect police officers and to
protect the occupants of a fleeing vehicle.
The police department has
had the device in its arsenal
for about eight yeras, Evart

Meet Brooke Belleville of Evart

was listening to the radio traffic

about the chase.
With it looking likely the fleeing vehicle was coming into Evart, the officer deployed the Stop
Stick on U.S. 10, the main artery
through town. The deployment
was successful. With punctured
tires, the 19-year-old driver of
the fleeing vehicle pulled in
behind the Wesco gas station
in town, exited the vehicle, and
fled on foot into a field. Police
were able to catch up with him
and arrest him without further
incident. He now faces charges
of third-degree fleeing and elud-

ing, driving while suspended

and a registration violation,
Green said.
We were thankful we had
the resource, Beam said of the
Stop Stick.
After a stop stick has been
successfully deployed, it needs
to go back to the company to
get refurbished or replaced, so
the Stop Stick is gone. Scofflaws shouldnt think that gives
them a free pass through Evart,
though. The department has a
backup Stop Stick ready for the
next high-speed chase to come
through town.

nesses tout it as a counterpart

to both Black Friday and Cyber
Monday.
Black Friday is a day shoppers flock to malls, Al Weinberg, the director of Evarts
Downtown Development Authority, said. Small Business
Saturday is the same idea for
local retailers. Weinberg, who
is working with merchants to
promote the idea, is encouraging shoppers to visit Evart retail establishments and to grab
lunch at an in-town restaurant.
When a person makes his
purchases in a big franchise
store, a substantial portion of
the money travels to another
community, Weinberg said.

When a person supports a local business, a much larger

amound remains in the community.
A number of the cooperating
Evart merchants have businesses in the DDA, an area
Weinberg describes as reaching from the dairy to the depot
from the river to the creek.
Merchants outside DDA boundaries are also particpating.

Public hearing on booster pump in Osceola Twp. Nov. 22

By Andy Duffy

Student of the Week

Police Chief John Beam said. It

remained in the back of Evarts
cruisers unused but never forgotten.
Then came Nov. 6. A highspeed chase started near Weidman in Isabella County. Officers
attempted to stop a vehicle after
the driver committed a traffic
violation according to Lt. Gary
Green of the Michigan State
Police. The driver made it all the
way to Evart still eluding pursuing officers. Then the driver met
his Waterloo.
It was after 11 p.m. The Evart
police officer on duty that night

EVART Osceola Township

will host a public hearing at a
special planning commission
meeting regarding a special
use permit application from
Ice Mountain SpringHill
Camps for a booster pump and a
building with an easement. The
building would be located at the
southern end of camp property
at about 7201 95th Ave.
All Osceola Township residents are invited to attend this
meeting and present their
points of view regarding the
permit application.

Ice Mountain would like to

build a booster station for the
pipeline that connects its well in
Osceola Township to its Evart
load facility.
The proposed station will
increase water pressure needed
to move water from a Nestle
Waters North America well to
its Evart facility. The well is located The company began using
more water from the well last
year.
According to company officials, the well is a critical source
of water for Ice Mountain. Ice
Mountain attempts to draw
water from diverse sources,
and the well serves as a backup

water supply if a disruption interrupts the flow of water from

other sources.
Plans call for a 12-by-22-feet,
single-story building on the
south side of SpringHill Camps
property. The station will be on
the west side of 95th Avenue,
within the same easement
maintained for the pipeline that
connects the well to the water
load facility.
Once the station is operational, the site will see little traffic.
The station will house automated equipment that will require
no regular staff presence. It will
produce little noise or light.
Dan Vos Construction of Ada

is overseeing the project.

Before the plan can progress,
the company will need to obtain
zoning and building approvals
from Osceola Township and a
construction approval from the
state.
The meeting will be held Nov.
22, 2016, at 7 p.m. at the Osceola
Township Hall, 8995 95th Ave.
Anyone seeking additional
information may contact Paul
Brown, the townships zoning
administrator, before the meeting. People may also submit
written comments to P.O. Box
832, Evart, 49631. Brown can
be contacted by email at osceolaza@yahoo.com.

What WAS it?

Think paperclip-meetsstapler. Sort of.

Officially these objects
are called Round Head
Brass Paper Fasteners.
The version we shared
with you, when unused,
have that tight pair of
legs descending from the
round button. One toe
is rounded, the other is
pointed.
To use one of these
fasteners to bind or hold
together a large stack of
papers simply insert the
legs, as is, through the hole
created by a hole punch
(picture the holes of binder paper). Once those legs
are all the way through the
stack, spread them apart,
flattening them in opposite
directions. This leaves the
button to hold onto the
top of the stack while the
splayed legs do the job at

the opposite end. If the

stack is thin, then often the
pointed leg will allow you
to push it through creating your own hole without
needing to employ an actual hole punch.
While stapling and paperclips may have overtaken the popular use of this
office supply, they are far
from obsolete and still have
an unique application. Hollywood scripts, real estate
dossiers, corporate reports
(and other stacks of numerous sheets which need
to spin or rotate as read),
are often held in place
with these. Additionally,
they make for easy insertion or removal of a page
from the stack without
having to re-bind or leave
staple-tears since the legs
of these fasteners are not
limited by a one-time-only
strength. Patented in the

mid-1800s these fasteners

or split pins, were made
of brass in order to avoid
any corrosion marring for
the important papers they
secured.
Today, decorative heads
on these have become the
rage among scrap bookers. Also in the art world:
these have come to be seen
as a handy joint fixture for
models (not the 62 blond
variety, rather for the paper, cardboard and thin
metal versions).
