STEM on Land, in the Air,

and under the Sea

Hear stories of experimentation., research, teaching,


and leading from three speakers who have taken their
STEM learning in remarkable directions.

Speakers will be in the Studio Theater in the Tilden Arts Center

AIR: Dan Wolf


As a pilot, Dan vVolf's realm is the air. He
founded Cape Air in 1989, flying just one rOhlte
between Boston and Provincetown. It is now is the
largest commuter airline in the United States, flying
Cessna 402s, Caravan Amphibians, Britten-Norman
Islanders, and ATR-42s on routes on the Cape and
Islands and in the Caribbean. Mr. Wolf's career combines his knowledge of Aeronautics
with an interest in philosophy and politics. He serves as a Massachusetts State Senator
representing Cape Cod and the Islands. He earned his B.S. in Political Philosophy from
Wesleyan University and a degree in Airframe and Power.Plant

LAND: JohnJ. Leonard


Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Professor John]. Leonard's latest research
addresses the problems of mapping and navigation of
mobile robots. Dr. Leonard teaches a course
on autonomous cars and is a member of the
MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence

Laboratory (CSAIL). Before joining the faculty, Pro

fessor Leonard raced on the school's DARPA Urban Challenge team. Dr. Leonard has also
studied underwater vehicles extensively. He has a B.S. in electrical engineering from the Uni

versity of Pennsylvania and a doctorate in Engineering Science from Oxford.

SEA: Kaitlyn Tradd


Exploring the ocean with underwater vehicles
has been Kaitlyn Tradd's focus at Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) since 20 IO. She
is a research engineer in the organization's Applied
Ocean Physics & Engineering Department. Her
projects span endeavors from a structural analysis of
the major HOY Alvin upgrade to scientific research
cruises with ROY Jason II. She is currently working
on the design of a new vertically profiling vehicle to be used for biogeochemical mapping.
Ms. Tradd earned her B.S. in Mechanical and Ocean Engineering from MIT.

The STEM journey III was a great success. We had more than 1,400 people at the event. We
were interviewed by Channel 99 (Cape Cod Media) and that is on youtube (STEM journey III and
